Jess Daniel Introduction Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is a musculoskeletal disorder characterized by the presence of multiple joint contractures (limitation of the range of motion of a joint) at birth. In some cases, only a few joints may be affected, however, in the classic cases of AMC, hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips, feet, and knees are affected. In the more severe cases, joints in the back and jaw can be affected as well. In addition to having joint contractures, children also experience muscle weakness, which further limits movement. There may be as many as 10 to 20 different arthrogrypotic disorders, all with similar joint manifestations. However, the most common form of AMC is amyoplasia. There are many different causes of AMC, but typically it is a result of either problems with joint growth and development, decreased fetal movement (not enough room in the uterus to move), or problems with spinal development in the first 3 months of pregnancy. AMC occurs in 1 out of every 3,000 live births. In most cases, AMC is not inherited and does not occur more than once in a family. However, in about 30% of the cases, a genetic cause has been identified.

Which has effected both of my shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and feet. I was born with one straight leg and one bent leg (which I broke in the womb), and both feet are clubbed. I've had several corrective surgeries on both legs from the age of 1 to 12 years old. And thankfully have had no surgery on my arms. They gave me my first motorised wheelchair at the age of 4, but like alot of people with disabilties, they had me trying all sorts of contraptions to get me mobile, I tried trolleys 3 inches off the ground (boye did spiders look big ...), my first trolley was made by my Father.

Welcome to Tuckers home on the web. This is me at one hour old! This is me and my coach...Aka..Daddy! This is me now! This is my new best friend Cody. He is 2wks older then me and has amc too. This is me writing with my foot. This is how I eat. This school year, the most amazing thing happend to me. The school finally listened to me when I was complaining about the work being to easy. They gave me a test and found out that I was working way above my grade level. They moved me up to the second grade. I am the youngest in the class but I am still the smartest in there. I hope that everyone that reads my page will see that just because someone is physically handicap dosen't mean we don't have a brain. I am very smart just like many others that have to sit in a wheelchair. I don't want people to feel sorry for me because there is really nothing to feel sorry for. HOW IMPORTANT ARE GOALS IN LIFE? Making and keeping goals are the most important thing in life if we want to achieve happiness. From losing that extra weight we might have gained to finally cleaning out that junk drawer, that one that seems to catch all that little stuff, that always adds up!

yes no Arthrogryposis: Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita; AMC Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) is not a diagnosis but a descriptive term which is used to describe a baby born with joint contractures affecting at least two different areas of the body. The joints may be fixed in a bent or straightened position. It is believed that such contractures may result from one of several processes that cause the unborn baby's limbs not to move properly at the time the joints are being formed. These processes fall into four main categories: problems with the nerve supply, the muscles, the connective or supporting tissues and external factors such as the blood supply to the baby or the shape of the womb. Approximately 1 in 5,000 babies are affected. Arthrogryposis includes over 150 different conditions. These include diagnoses such as Multiple Pterygium syndrome, Larsen syndrome and Freeman Sheldon syndrome . Some are relatively mild whilst others involve problems with other organs such as the brain, nervous system or muscles.

ARTHROGRYPOSIS MULTIPLEX CONGENITA (AMC)
  • Definition Epidemiology Pathophysiology Etiology ... Reference Page
  • Definition
    AMC is a nonprogressive congenital neuromuscular syndrome characterized by severe joint contractures, muscle weakness, and fibrosis.
    Epidemiology
    AMC occurs in 1 out of every 3000 live births. Amyoplasia, characterized by fatty and fibrous tissue replacement of the limb muscles, is the most common form (43%).
    Pathophysiology
    The principle cause of AMC is believed to be decreased fetal movements (akinesia) caused by maternal or fetal abnormalities. It is associated with neurogenic and myopathic disorders. It is believed that the neuropathic form of AMC involves a deterioration in the anterior horn cell leading to muscle weakness and fibrosis.
    Etiology
    Several factors are implicated in AMC including hyperthermia of the fetus, prenatal virus, fetal vascular compromise, septum of the uterus, decreased amniotic fluid, muscle and/or connective tissue developmental abnormalities.
    Clinical Manifestations
    The primary joints involved (in order of decreasing prevalence) include the foot, hip, wrist, knee, elbow, and shoulder. AMC is typically symmetrical and

    A site dedicated to our daughter Abby whom was born with arthrogryposis MultiplexCongenita.
    http://www.forabby.com/
    Welcome to ForAbby.Com. This site is dedicated to our beautiful daughter Abigail Marie. Abby is a typical 3 year old girl with lots of energy and determination. She has always been a strong little girl and continues to show us how determined she is to persevere. She may have weak muscles but she has a strong heart! Abigail has a rare muscle disease called Amyoplasia a form of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. This site has been up for a little over 2 years now....and I have yet to put up information on Arthrogryposis and how it affects our little girl. I know a lot of visitors come here to research this disease...so I will try and provide as much information as possible. If you use any of this for research projects or presentations please give credit where credit is due. Also if you are using specifics about our daughter please ask us before using her info or pictures in your reports. Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita and Amyoplasia Arthrogryposis = curved joints
    Multiplex = multiple
    Congenita = evident at birth A = absent
    myo = muscle
    plasia = development Arthrogryposis is a rare muscle condition that occurs in approximately 1 in 3000 births. The most common form of Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita is Amyoplasia (40% of AMC cases or 1 in 10,000 births). Causes are varied including lack of intrauterine movement - which is suspected in our case. Multiple joint contracture can occur in all limbs but some may be more affected in the upper or lower extremities. Some cases are more severe than others including those that involve the internal organs. Treatment usually occurs soon after birth through splinting, casting, therapy and in some cases surgery. Intellectually, AMC children develop normally and in Abby's case she is a few months behind in her gross and fine motor skills and has a 4-6 month delay in speech.

    Special needs adoption story a baby with arthrogryposis grows up to be a talentedyoung girl.
    http://www.comeunity.com/adoption/special_needs/arthrogryposis.html
    Our Daughter's Arthrogryposis
    By Barb Burke Our family has come in contact with so many beautiful children and families struggling with Arthrogryposis. They have been such an inspiration and encouragement to our family! My husband and I did some ground work prior to accepting the referral of our daughter from the adoption agency. We attended a full-day seminar on Arthrogryposis at our local Children's Hospital headed by Dr. Judith Hall, the leading expert on the subject. She has researched this condition for the past 20 years and revealed cutting-edge information on the subject. I also contacted a few parents who were raising children with arthrogryposis and found them most helpful. Initial Contact We first heard of our daughter residing in a babies home in Seoul, Korea when she was 4 months old. At that time, she had been diagnosed as being born with a type of Arthrogryposis known as Amyoplasia, affecting only her upper limbs. Within 10 days of life, her biological parents placed her in the care of an agency for adoption because they were given little hope for her future, and felt unable to afford the needed care. We first met Soo (Excellent) Hee (Brilliant) through a picture at age four months. She was born with shoulders internally rotated, elbows fixed in extension,and flexion contracture of her wrists. She received range of motion by a therapist visiting her 3x's weekly in the orphanage. The US doctors believe this saved her small muscles from atrophying.
