Appendicitis
Appendicitis is common. Typical symptoms include abdominal pain and vomiting. An operation to remove the inflamed appendix is usually done before it perforates (bursts). A perforated appendix can be serious.
What and where is the appendix? The appendix is a small 'dead end' tube that comes off the caecum. It is normally about 5-10 cm long and quite thin. The appendix appears to have no function. Why it is there is a bit of a mystery. The caecum is the first part of the large intestine just before the colon. The small intestine digests and absorbs food. The parts of the food that are not digested begin to be formed into faeces (motions) in the caecum. What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis means inflammation of the appendix. The inflamed appendix becomes infected with bacteria (bugs) from the intestine. The inflamed appendix gradually swells. Eventually, if not treated, the swollen appendix might perforate (burst). This is very serious as the contents of the intestine then spill into the abdominal cavity. This can cause a serious infection of the membrane that lines the abdomen (peritonitis), or an abscess in the abdomen. So, if appendicitis is suspected, early treatment is best before it bursts.

Appendicitis
The appendix in a finger-like extension of the large intestine. It has no known function in humans. However, serious illness can result if the opening of the appendix becomes blocked. Blockage can lead to pressure within the appendix which leads to tissue injury and inflammation, a condition called appendicitis. If not treated in a timely manner, the wall of the appendix can break open (rupture) and allow spread of bacteria from the intestine to the abdominal cavity. The resulting inflammation is called peritonitis.
Symptoms
The most important symptom of appendicitis is persistent pain in the lower right abdomen. Fever, loss of appetite, and vomiting are also common symptoms. Small children with poor communication skills may show increased irritability and a reluctance to move about normally.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of appendicitis is made best by physical examination of the abdomen. Ultrasound and CT scan examinations are sometimes useful when the cause of a child's abdominal pain is not clear after physical examination. Blood will be drawn to check for the presence of an infection (elevated white blood cell count).
The operation
An operation to remove the appendix (appendectomy) is the only effective treatment for appendicitis, except under unusual circumstances when there is a well-developed abscess next to the appendix. In this case, the abscess might be drained with a needle, intravenous antibiotics administered, and the appendix removed six weeks later.

Causes and Symptoms
The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the first part of the large intestine, also called the colon. The appendix is located in the lower right portion of the abdomen. It has no known function. Removal of the appendix appears to cause no change in digestive function. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Once it starts, there is no effective medical therapy, so appendicitis is considered a medical emergency. When treated promptly, most patients recover without difficulty. If treatment is delayed, the appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis is the most common acute surgical emergency of the abdomen. Anyone can get appendicitis, but it occurs most often between the ages of 10 and 30.

Goldman, MD Gideon Koren, MD, FRCPC ABSTRACT QUESTION A 26-year-old patient in our clinic, who was 18 weeks pregnant at the time, experienced acute abdominal pain and was diagnosed with appendicitis. The inflamed appendix was successfully removed. Is her pregnancy at risk?
ANSWER Appendicitis is not rare during pregnancy and is associated with increased reproductive risk. Women who have undergone appendectomy during pregnancy are at higher risk of fetal loss, especially in early pregnancy and with appendiceal perforation, and of premature contractions and labour. Despite the difficulty of diagnosing appendicitis during pregnancy, appendectomy should not be delayed.

What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is an irritation, inflammation, and infection of the appendix (a narrow, hollow tube that branches off the large intestine). The appendix functions as a part of the immune system during the first few years of life. After this time period, the appendix stops functioning and other organs continue helping fight infection. Appendicitis is the most common cause of emergency surgery in childhood.
What causes appendicitis?
Appendicitis occurs when the interior of the appendix becomes filled with something that causes it to swell, such as mucus, stool, or parasites. The appendix then becomes irritated and inflamed. The blood supply to the appendix is cut off as the swelling and irritation increase. Adequate blood flow is necessary for a body part to remain healthy. When the blood flow is reduced, the appendix starts to die. Rupture (or perforation) occurs as holes develop in the walls of the appendix, allowing stool, mucus, and other substances to leak through and get inside the abdomen. An infection inside the abdomen known as peritonitis occurs when the appendix perforates.

This diagnosis must be considered in all age groups but is more common between the ages of 4 and 15 years. The function of the appendix is unknown. However, in rabbits and other animals the cecum is similar in shape to the appendix and plays a role in digestion of food. The middle, inside portion of the appendix may be irregular and somewhat narrow because of the presence of lymph nodes in the wall of the appendix. In most patients the appendix is located in the right lower area of the abdomen. However, since the appendix is a fingerlike projection, it may be in various locations in the right upper area of the abdomen under the gallbladder, in the pelvis, across the top of the bladder, and behind the large intestine. ( Figure 1 Figure 1: McBurney's point is located one third of the distance along a line from the front of the right pelvic bone and the belly button.
