Do you know the character Madeline ? In one of the stories, she awakens one night at boarding school with a bad pain in her belly. The doctor says it's her appendix causing the pain, so she's rushed to the hospital for an operation. Soon, she recovers and feels much better. But what is an appendix and why would it need to be removed? What Is Appendicitis?
Your appendix is a small, finger-shaped branch off your large intestine, in the lower right part of your belly, also called your abdomen . The appendix (say: uh- pen -diks) really has no purpose. So if a kid needs to have it removed, his or her body will work just fine after the operation. Some researchers think that many, many years ago, the appendix was once a useful part of the digestive system, but we don't use it any more. When your appendix gets inflamed, or swells up, it's called appendicitis (say: uh-pen-duh- sye -tus). Both kids and adults can get appendicitis. There isn't always an obvious reason why appendicitis happens. Sometimes it happens after there is an infection in the intestine. Sometimes something causes a blockage in the appendix, such as food that was in the process of being digested. This blockage can cause appendicitis. Appendicitis is not contagious. This means you can't catch it from anyone who has it. But there isn't much you can do to prevent appendicitis from happening.

Appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix, isn't a very common cause of abdominal pain, but it is something that parents tend to worry about a lot because when it does happen it requires medical attention right away. There is no way to prevent appendicitis. But with sophisticated diagnostic tests, and antibiotics, most cases of appendicitis can be identified and treated without any complications. It's important to learn how to recognize the symptoms of appendicitis - and how they are different from a run-of-the-mill stomach ache - so that if your child has the condition, you can get the appropriate medical care right away. The symptoms of appendicitis typically start with a mild fever and pain around the bellybutton, and can be accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation. The stomach pain usually worsens and moves to the lower right side of the belly. Call your doctor immediately if you suspect that your child has appendicitis. The earlier you catch it, the easier - and the quicker - it will be to treat. What is Appendicitis?

Appendectomy The appendix is a small structure that is attached to the large intestine and serves an unknown purpose. It can easily become inflamed, usually after a piece of stool or food is trapped inside. Once inflamed, the appendix will swell, become infected and cause pain. Most parents are familiar with the symptoms of appendicitis, especially the severe pain in the right lower side of a child's abdomen, but many parents still worry about appendicitis whenever their kids have belly pain, even if they don't have classic symptoms. Having a good understanding of this common problem can help to avoid unnecessary visits to the emergency room and avoid a delay in diagnosis or a misdiagnosis when your child really does have appendicitis.

Appendicitis
Appendicitis Overview
The appendix is a narrow tubular pouch that is attached to the intestines. When the appendix is blocked, it becomes inflamed and results in the condition known as appendicitis. If the blockage continues, the inflamed tissue becomes infected with bacteria and begins to die from a lack of blood supply, which finally results in the appendix bursting. Appendicitis is a common condition that affects 6% of the population sometime during their lifetimes. Although it most commonly occurs among those between the ages of 10-30 years, it can occur at any age. Increased vigilance is required for the very young and old because these people have a higher rate of complications. What is appendicitis? Appendicitis results from inflammation of the appendix. (The appendix is an outpouching from the right side of the large intestine.) This often occurs because the appendix has become obstructed, or blocked. However, no one really knows why this blockage happens in the appendices of some children and not in othersso it probably cannot be prevented. Appendicitis is the most common cause of emergency abdominal surgery in children in the United States. It's somewhat more common in boys than in girls, and more common in teenagers than in younger children. However, appendicitis is seen in children of all ageseven (very rarely!) newborn babies. Signs and symptoms of appendicitis The most common presentation of appendicitis usually begins with vague pain in the middle of the abdomen. The child then begins to vomit, and loses his or her appetite. The pain then moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. The child may develop a low-grade fever, and not want to walk. The child may notice that the pain gets worse during the bumpy parts of a car ride to the doctor. When the doctor asks the child to cough, or presses the lower right side of the child's abdomen, the pain will also get worse.

Appendicitis and Appendectomy
Medical Author: Dennis Lee, M.D.
Medical Editor: Jay W. Marks, M.D. What is the appendix?
The appendix is a closed-ended, narrow tube that attaches to the cecum (the first part of the colon ) like a worm. (The anatomical name for the appendix, vermiform appendix, means worm-like appendage.) The inner lining of the appendix produces a small amount of mucus that flows through the appendix and into the cecum. The wall of the appendix contains lymphatic tissue that is part of the immune system for making antibodies. Like the rest of the colon, the wall of the appendix also contains a layer of muscle. What is appendicitis?
Appendicitis is inflammation of the appendix. It is thought that appendicitis begins when the opening from the appendix into the cecum becomes blocked. The blockage may be due to a build-up of thick mucus within the appendix or to stool that enters the appendix from the cecum. The mucus or stool hardens, becomes rock-like, and blocks the opening. This rock is called a fecalith (literally, a rock of stool). At other times, the

Appendicitis
The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the first part of the large intestine, also called the colon. The appendix is located in the lower right portion of the abdomen. It has no known function. Removal of the appendix appears to cause no change in digestive function. Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. Once it starts, there is no effective medical therapy, so appendicitis is considered a medical emergency. When treated promptly, most patients recover without difficulty. If treatment is delayed, the appendix can burst, causing infection and even death. Appendicitis is the most common acute surgical emergency of the abdomen. The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the first part of the large intestine, also called the colon. The appendix is located in the lower right portion of the abdomen, near where the small intestine attaches to the large intestine. Top
Causes
The cause of appendicitis relates to blockage of the inside of the appendix, known as the lumen. The blockage leads to increased pressure, impaired blood flow, and inflammation. If the blockage is not treated, gangrene and rupture (breaking or tearing) of the appendix can result.
