Overview of Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Approximately 30 million Americans are victims of a sleep disorder called obstructive sleep apnea . Many millions more are predisposed and have a high risk of developing the illness. If you are an adult male, the odds are about 50/50 that your breathing is not normal when you are sleeping. It is imperative that anyone who might have this problem or is predisposed, or knows someone they care about who has the problem, should have the clearest possible understanding about it.
We have dedicated this section of the web site to a crystal clear and detailed description of all aspects of obstructive sleep apnea. The section begins with an overview which will introduce the reader to this important sleep disorder. During the next several weeks we will be providing you with a more in-depth understanding of obstructive sleep apnea. Please check back to this section to view upcoming segments.

Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) refers to a wide spectrum of sleep-related conditions including increased resistance to airflow through the upper airway, heavy snoring, marked reduction in airflow (hypopnea), and complete cessation of breathing (apnea). Increased resistance to airflow without frank apnea has been referred to as upper airway resistance syndrome; apneas and hypopneas are classified as central, obstructive, or mixed; Patients with sleep disordered breathing can experience daytime symptoms, such as sleepiness or excessive somnolence, depressed mood, irritability, and cognitive dysfunction, that can adversely effect health-related quality of life. The sequelae of SDB result both from apnea-associated oxygen desaturation and from sleep disturbance. Ultimately, this condition can lead to any number of medical problems, including increased automobile accidents, hypertension, cognitive impairment, impotence, and early death. A variety of treatment options are available for patients with sleep disordered breathing. Interventions for obstructive sleep apnea, for example, include behavioral intervention, diet and exercise programs, medications, jaw repositioning or tongue retraining, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), or surgical procedures for removing or circumventing obstruction. Several instruments, including

O bstructive sleep apnea is a disorder in which complete or partial obstruction of the airway during sleep causes loud snoring, oxyhemoglobin desaturations and frequent arousals. As a result, affected persons have unrestful sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness. The disorder is associated with hypertension, impotence and emotional problems. Because obstructive sleep apnea often occurs in obese persons with comorbid conditions, its individual contribution to health problems is difficult to discern. The disorder has, however, been linked to angina, nocturnal cardiac arrhythmias, myocardial infarction, stroke and motor vehicle crashes. Even though obstructive sleep apnea is fairly common, it often remains undiagnosed in primary care practice. Because the disorder is associated with significant morbidity and even some mortality, family physicians need to be familiar with its clinical presentation and treatment.

  • Snoring
Snoring is an age-old problem with many social consequences, including marital discord , separate bedrooms, even separation and divorce, and angry neighbors . Snoring usually occurs due to vibration of the tissue in the throat, usually while the patient is breathing through the mouth. A vibrating uvula Although in itself snoring is not necessarily dangerous, it may be a symptom of sleep apnea or other sleep disorders condition s which can be very dangerous. Until recently , the treatment for snoring has included such techniques as behavioral modification, weight loss, dental devices, nasal strips, drugs, and major (painful) surgery. But now, the treatment for snoring and many cases of sleep apnea may be a simple office procedure.
  • Sleep Apnea
    • Sleep apnea is usually obstructive; that is, the breathing passage is blocked between the nose and the voice box. If sleep apnea is severe enough, the oxygen in the bloodstream which is reaching the brain and other vital organs may fall to dangerous levels. The site(s) - or point(s) - of obstruction must be diagnosed before treatment can begin.

The Story of a Sleep Apnea Victim
My husband, Norman, often fell asleep watching television, and the kids snickered. "Dad's getting old," my daughter would whisper. But Dad wasn't really old. In his early fifties, he was much too young to be sleeping his life away. As the malady became worse, he'd fall asleep a dozen times a day, even in the middle of a sentence. He often fell asleep while driving, creating a danger to himself and to others. If I were there, I'd nudge him with my elbow or shout to wake him up. Several times, however, he was alone and he landed in the ditch.

However, most of us will have some problem with sleep at least once in our lives and 1 in 5 have a chronic problem with sleep. We all breath at a rate of 10-20 times a minute without conscious effort. However, 1 in 5 individuals will have some problem with breathing due to smoking, occupational exposures, or conditions such as asthma (which affects 1 in 20). What Is Sleep Apnea? People with untreated sleep apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times during the night and often for a minute or longer. The most common symptoms of sleep apnea are loud snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often leads to excessive daytime sleepiness and may be associated with an early morning headache. Sleep apnea is very common and affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age, even children.
