Collin Anderson , an Australian Consulting Engineer and sleep apnea sufferer, believed in order to have a restful night’s sleep a mask would have to be custom made to the person’s face. After 7 years of research, development and testing, we believe we have produced the world’s best mask because of our patented design features. These features address all the problems such as leakage, pressure sores (caused by excessive strap pressure), noise, and visibility, cleaning problems, sore ear lobes, moisture and Co2 build up etc.etc. A Sleep Apnea Mask custom made to your exact facial shape. The Anderson Mask is the only one of its type available anywhere in the world.

As a comparison, conventional masks have a huge sealing area of approximately 4 square inches. This requires a heavy strap pressure and so the larger the sealing area the more strap pressure required. Your new Personally Moulded Sleep Apnea Mask is only 1/8 of the sealing area of a conventional mask therefore, a lot less strap pressure and a lot more comfort.

Sleep Apnea
What is sleep apnea? Sleep apnea refers to interruption of breathing during sleep. Apnea is a Greek word that means "want of breath." The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. In obstructive sleep apnea, the muscles of the soft palate around the base of the tongue and the uvula relax, obstructing the airway. The airway obstruction causes the level of oxygen in the blood to fall (hypoxia), increases the stress on the heart, elevates blood pressure, and prevents the patient from entering "REM sleep," the restful and restorative stage of sleep. In other words, sleep apnea causes deprivation of quality sleep. What are symptoms of sleep apnea? The symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea include loud snoring and/or abnormal pattern of snoring with pauses and gasps. Other symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, memory changes, depression, and irritability. In some patients sleep apnea can contribute to high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, and heart attack. Obstructive sleep apnea typically affects middle-age, overweight men, and may affect women in later years. Obstructive apnea can be aggravated by alcohol, sleeping pills and tranquilizers taken at bedtime.

Dentists play an important role in the team approach to the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Physicians, dentists, psychologists, and respiratory therapists all pool their knowledge to treat each patient appropriately and effectively. Dentists who are specifically trained in aspects of sleep medicine and have a command of multiple appliance modalities are of great help to physicians in treating patients with sleep disordered breathing problems. For more detailed information about sleep apnea, its diagnosis and treatment, as well as detailed information about sleep testing. What is sleep apnea?
People with sleep apnea stop breathing for 10 to 30 seconds at a time while they are sleeping. These short stops in breathing can happen up to 400 times every night! If you have sleep apnea, the periods of not breathing may make you wake up from deep sleep. If you are waking up all night long, you aren't getting enough rest from your sleep. There are two kinds of sleep apnea: obstructive apnea and central apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common type. Nine out of 10 people with sleep apnea have this type of apnea. If you have obstructive apnea, something is blocking the passage or windpipe (called the trachea) that brings air into your body. You keep trying to breathe, but you can't get enough air because of the blockage. Your windpipe might be blocked by your tongue, tonsils or uvula (the little piece of flesh that hangs down in the back of your throat). It might also be blocked by a large amount of fatty tissue in the throat or even by relaxed throat muscles. Central sleep apnea is rare. This type is called central apnea because it is related to the function of the central nervous system. If you have this type of apnea, the muscles you use to breathe don't get the "go-ahead" signal from your brain. Either the brain doesn't send the signal, or the signal gets interrupted.

Scientists and medical professionals do not fully understand this complicated, necessary, physiological phenomenon. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, about 40 million people in the United States suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders each year and an additional 20 million people suffer occasional sleep problems. There are more than 70 different sleep disorders that are generally classified into one of three categories:

Exercise Training Effect
on
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome
Joseph F. Norman, Susanna G. Von Essen, Robert H. Fuchs and Maxine McElligott University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska Published in Sleep Research Online SUMMARY The authors investigated the role of exercise training in the management of sleep apnea by entering nine patients with mild to moderate OSAS (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome) who completed a six month supervised exercise program. Prior to, and at the end of, this program, they conducted sleep studies, body measurements, and questionnaire evaluation of quality of life, daytime sleepiness and mood. Their subjects included mostly men, ages 32 to 60 years (average 48 years of age), of normal to moderately overweight body mass indices (less than 40), in good general health, with current symptoms of OSAS and sleep study evidence of OSAS (AHI over 5 respiratory arousals per hour of sleep). Five were using nasal CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) throughout the study, starting one week to six months prior. The exercise program consisted of three times per week of at least 20 minutes of individually designed, low impact, moderate aerobic exercise designed to elevate the heart rate up to 85% of the age-predicted maximum. This was gauged on the basis of an initial submaximal exercise treadmill test. Mostly the exercise incisted of treadmill walking and stationary cycling, complemented by stair climbing, rowing machines, and resistive weight exercises. Two subjects started the program but dropped out.
