Snoring and Sleep Apnea: Sleep Well, Feel Better, 3rd Edition
Ralph A. Pascualy, M.D.
Sally Warren Soest, M.S.
"Sally Warren Soest is the wife of a sleep apnea patient, and Dr. Ralph Pascualy is the physician who treated him. Together they have written a highly readable and practical book useful for anyone dealing with sleep apnea. Case studies, line drawings, and photographs help highlight and explain salient points. They discuss the symptoms and causes of sleep apnea as well as the other health problems that can result if it isn't treated. The section on diagnosis includes detailed information on what to expect from a visit to a sleep clinic. The treatment section focuses on CPAP, the most widely used and effective treatment. Sections on sleep apnea in seniors, children, and discussion of the relationship between apnea and SIDS. Includes excellent references, a glossary, and resources for further information. If you only buy one book on sleep apnea, this is the one!" Library Journal "The authors of this excellent book provide information about sleep apnea primarily to patients and their families. The uniqueness of the book resides in a blend of the viewpoint of a physician (sleep medicine specialist) and the viewpoint of a patient's spouse. The reader is provided with state-of-the-art information in the field of sleep apnea in a more palatable form." Doody Publishing

http://www.sleepsurgery.com/aboutus.html
about us The Facial Reconstructive Surgical and Medical Center was developed conjointly by Doctors Nelson Powell and Robert Riley. Their education, training and experience spans over twenty years, with each earning both a D.D.S. and an M.D. degree. Their surgery training includes Head and Neck Surgery, which both doctors completed at Stanford University Medical Center in the early 1980's. It is here that they met Doctor William Dement, the father of Sleep Medicine and Doctor Christian Guilleminault, a world leader in Sleep Disorders, who was the first to describe Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS). The collaborative efforts of these four physicians led to the establishment of the current standards of practice for sleep medicine and surgery at Stanford University.
These physicians recognized that in Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome the entire upper airway is diffusely involved in the majority of patients. This explains why so many patients do not respond favorably to isolated throat surgery (uvulopalotopharyngoplasty, or UPPP) since this surgery only treats one area of obstruction. Therefore, they developed multiple surgical procedures to specifically address the other areas of potential obstruction, the most important of which was the base (back) of the tongue. They subsequently developed a

In adults: Snoring may be so loud that it rivals a jackhammer and can be heard rooms away (or even by neighbors). A particular pattern of snoring interrupted by pauses, then gasps, reveals that the sleeper's breathing stops and restarts. Adults with OSAS may snort or gasp for breath during sleep. Adults with OSAS may fall asleep at inappropriate times, such as at work or while driving. Adults with OSAS may feel unable to breath. Adults with OSAS may make gasping sounds. Adults with OSAS may have experience a choking sensation. Adults with OSAS may suffer from early-morning headaches and extreme daytime sleepiness. Excessive body movements during sleep. Adults with OSAS may have trouble concentrating, and can become unusually forgetful, irritable, anxious, or depressed. In some cases, a person may know he or she has a sleep problem and seeks help. Adults with OSAS may complain about morning headaches, frequent nighttime urination, loss of interest in sex. Men may complain of impotence and women may have menstrual irregularities.

Behavioral Treatments Many of the complementary therapies mentioned in Alternative and Integral Therapies for Insomnia are also useful as complementary therapies for sleep apnea. Exercise and Weight Loss Many of those who suffer from sleep apnea are either overweight or obese. Hence, weight loss and exercise are an effective form of treatment for sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is generally, though not always, thought to occur because of structural problems. This means that the breathing airways become obstructed while a person is sleeping. When you lose weight some of these passages get opened back again so that you can breathe better. Even a small weight loss may make a big difference if the person is severely obese. Homeopathy In treating sleep apnea, lachesis and homeopathic opium are useful, depending on the personality type. Lachesis is recommended for extroverted, charismatic, angry individuals.

The Sleep Lab
A State-of-the Art Diagnostic Facility dedicated to Diagnosis of Sleep Disorders Problems Associated with Snoring: Are you experiencing . . .Chronic fatigue or daytime sleepiness? Are you waking up tired every day? If so, you have increased risk for heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, and your risk of having an automobile accident is increased three-fold. What Causes Snoring Loud snoring may be the signal that something is seriously wrong with your breathing during sleep. Snoring indicates that the airway is not fully open, and the noise of snoring comes from the effort to force air through the narrowed passageway. Sleep Apnea: Sleep apnea may present as snoring but it is much more serious. It is important to differentiate between snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious breathing disorder that causes difficulty in breathing during sleep. Pauses in breathing during sleep result in lower levels of oxygen in your blood. Fighting for Oxygen Your body will fight to get the oxygen it needs. If your airway is constricted, it may wake you up a little . . . it may wake you up a lot. In either case, the depth of your sleep will be impaired. As a result, you will be tired the next day, and the cycle will have a negative effect on your health.

Sleep Medicine
Are Sleep Disorders Serious?
  • Sleepiness is a contributing factor to many motor vehicle accidents.
  • 4% of all traffic fatalities and as many as 30% on high-speed, boring stretches of highway, result from a driver falling asleep at the wheel.
  • Sleepiness has been implicated as a contributing factor to major industrial accidents and environmental disasters such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill.
  • Loud snoring can create a severe strain on a relationship. Imagine sleeping next to a buzz saw every night.
  • Sleep apnea is closely associated with a number of serious medical conditions including hypertension, coronary artery disease and stroke.
  • Untreated, chronic insomnia may lead to depression.
  • Tiredness diminishes concentration and interest and saps the enjoyment from life.
  • Each year sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, and sleepiness add an estimated $15.9 billion to America's healthcare bill.
What is a polysomnogram?
  • A polysomnogram or sleep study is a non-invasive test which records your sleep pattern, breathing, oxygen level, heart rate and rhythm, and muscle tone while you sleep overnight in a private, hotel-like room at the center.
What is the connection between snoring and sleep apnea?
