The Most Wonderful Time of the Year?
“’Tis the season to be jolly!” - Words by J.P. McCaskey, 1881 Many modern Americans couldn’t disagree more, if current statistics are correct. Depression strikes about 17 million American adults each year, according to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and the holidays themselves can trigger feelings of dread, anxiety or depression in some people. Many factors can contribute to tension and sadness during the holidays, including fatigue, unrealistic expectations, increased stress and unresolved family issues. Add in the demands of shopping, parties, family reunions and house guests, and you have the perfect formula for producing high levels of stress. Common stress reactions during the holidays include headaches, excessive drinking, over-eating or not eating enough, and difficulty sleeping. And a post-holiday let down resulting from physical and emotional reactions during the holiday months may cause holiday blues to continue into the new year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) have a great deal of useful information about how to identify and prevent – or just make it through – the times when expectations are high but your mood is low.

Home Status Anxiety The Art of Travel Consolations of Philosophy ... Essays in Love 'Every adult life could be said to be defined by two great love stories. The first - the story of our quest for sexual love - is well known and well-charted. The second - the story of our quest for love from the world - is a more secret and shameful tale. And yet this second love story is no less intense than the first.' This is a book about an almost universal anxiety that rarely gets mentioned directly: an anxiety about what others think of us; about whether we're judged a success or a failure, a winner or a loser. This is a book about status anxiety. Alain de Botton, bestselling author of The Consolations of Philosophy and The Art of Travel, asks - with lucidity and charm - where worries about our status come from and what if anything we can do to surmount them. With the help of philosophers, artists and writers, he examines the origins of status anxiety (ranging from the consequences of the French Revolution to our secret dismay at the success of our friends), before revealing ingenious ways in which people have learnt to overcome their worries in their search for happiness. We learn about sandal-less philosophers and topless bohemians, about the benefits of putting skulls on our sideboards and of looking at ruins.

This test anxiety reduction program is designed to help students who know the academic material, but they have trouble while taking the examination. Often, these are the very students who are viewed by teachers, parents and other students as very smart. It is not uncommon for well meaning teachers, parents and others to comment, 'you are so smart. It surprises me that you don't do better on your examinatins.' Of course, this only puts more pressure on the student.
The Test Anxiety Reduction Program
This is a step by step program that is based on more than 20 years of development work and direct service to students. It consists of a series of behavior modification exercises that have been specially adapted to test taking situations. Dr. Hudesman has had his work published in professional journals and accepted for presentation at an international conference.
There are two types of service that are available:

Separation Anxiety in Dogs
Linked to this article is a short video clip which shows a dog displaying several behaviours typical of separation anxiety. The video has 3 distinct segments; 1) dog showing destructive behaviour within seconds of human departure 2) the same dog 20 minutes later howling and 3) the same dog showing excessive greeting behaviour upon return of the owners. Click to load separation anxiety video for viewing.
Introduction
Separation anxiety in dogs is the fear or dislike of isolation which often results in undesirable behaviour. Separation anxiety is one of the most common causes of canine behavioural problems (Polin 1992; Voith and Borchelt 1985). As social animals, it is normal for puppies to form attachments to their mother and littermates. Once a puppy is separated from its family group, it becomes attached to its owner. Attachment implies a trusting relationship and is the foundation of a good, healthy bond between owner and pet (Polin 1992). However, when a dog becomes overly dependent on its owner, problem behaviours may result. There are many problem behaviours associated with separation anxiety including: defecation and urination in inappropriate locations, destructive behaviour, excessive barking and whining, depression, and hyperactivity. These behaviours may also be the symptoms of other problems. However, if undesired behaviours are clearly related to the absence of the owner, occur shortly after departure and a prolonged greeting response occurs upon the owner's return, separation anxiety is the probable cause (McElroy 1989). If a problem behaviour has persisted for an extended period, a visit to the vet will ensure that there are no underlying medical problems.

Test Anxiety
Symptoms of Test Anxiety
Students often blame test anxiety for poor performance on exams. This poor performance is frequently a lack of preparedness for a test (which causes anxiety) rather than classic test anxiety. However, if several symptoms of test anxiety are present in your life, you may be experiencing the real thing. You may want to consider the following symptoms and keep track of how many apply to you. Most symptoms of test anxiety are those that happen while taking the exam. The most common symptom is to experience a mental block or freeze up. A person with test anxiety may find the words meaningless while reading test questions. Or a less severe version of this symptom is needing to reread test questions several times in order to comprehend them. One feeling that is a common symptom of test anxiety is panic. The feeling of panic may come for a person with test anxiety if he or she doesn't know the answer to just one question on an exam. It may also come as time runs out at the end of an exam period. Some other symptoms of test anxiety that happen during an exam: worry over your performance compared to other test takers, being easily distracted during the exam, and plotting ways to escape from a test (like sneaking out or faking an illness). Certain other symptoms of test anxiety may appear while you are studying for your exam, while waiting to go to the exam, or during the exam:
