  • feel NERVOUS before a math test? PANIC and freeze while taking math tests? feel HELPLESS doing your homework? think that it's HOPELESS - you just don't get math, never will, so there's no sense even trying?
I read everything, now what? Nervous Nights Stomach-churning head-spinning sleepless nights can be a sign of math anxiety. Try these simple ideas to help you relax and wake up feeling in charge.
1. Study - OK, that sounds dumb. Of course you should study. Check out these study tips . But look at #2... 2. Don't study too much! Spending too much time going over and over the same stuff won't help and will just overwhelm you. 3. Calm those fears by treating yourself with calmness. Try to have a set routine - knowing that you ALWAYS eat oatmeal on test days might just help. Go to bed on time. In the morning, eat breakfast, put on your lucky sweater (really! it works!), and pack yourself a treat for lunch. Back to top Test... Brain... Freeze... Panic

104. Using EFT For Panic Or Anxiety

EFT provides both rapid relief and long term benefits for Stress, Panic Attacks and Anxiety Attacks. It works equally well for these problems and often works where nothing else will. Once you have learned the EFT process , you can apply it at the onset of an attack and, in most cases, it will rapidly "bring you down" within minutes. This is an astonishing experience for long term sufferers. For some people, a few rounds of EFT not only rapidly dissipates a current attack but, in addition, it noticeably reduces ... or eliminates ... future occurrences. For others, however, such long term results may require more sophisticated uses of EFT. There may, for example, be deeper emotional causes such as anger, fear, guilt or trauma that require more sophisticated uses of EFT.

Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Ativan
These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician. Ativan [posted 12//08/98]
Question: Answer: Ativan is addicting both to you and your fetus. It should be avoided if possible, while pregnant. Drugs like prozac, paxil etc can be used-but, the effect on the fetus is less well known. I'd probably recommend as low a dose of ativan as possible. But, you're in a bit of a pickle. Anxiety does not cause asthma, but anxiety often makes one feel short of breath.(Then again so does pregnancy). Ativan General Information [posted 10/13/98]
Question: W ould you please help me by finding this medication fundamental and the need for it. I must do research on Ativan, for school, thanks. Answer: Happy to help;but, what do you need? Ativan belongs to a class called benzodiazepines which are used for sedation, anxiety disorders etc. I would refer you to a basic text like Goodman and Gilman's Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics by Hardman(available in all medical libraries and most large libraries) for a long discussion. Ativan Dependency Concerns [posted 10/13/98]
Question: I have a prescription to take ativan for anxiety and wonder what the proper way is to take it. Should it only be used sometimes during anxious periods or on a daily basis? I am concerned about dependency. Also, are there problems taking it with St Johns Wort?

Anxiety is a normal experience. Moderate or high levels of anxiety can increase alertness and performance in particular situations. However, people who experience continuous or recurring fears, or episodes of intense fear can feel powerless to manage their symptoms and their lives can become severely restricted. Anxiety Disorders affect at least 12% of Australians at some time in their lives. The increasing demands and stress of everyday life means that anxiety has become a problem in our society. All indications are that stress related mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders and depression, will represent a growing area of need in Mental Health resources within the next few years. The five major anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety (sometimes referred to as Social Phobia), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other types of disorders are Specific Phobia and Separation Anxiety.

[Résumé] [Frequently Asked Questions ] [Depression Page] [Combating Shyness] ... [Contact Information] Welcome to my website. I am a licensed psychologist with years of experience offering counseling and psychotherapy. I have helped many, many people, who were struggling with the stresses or overwhelming problems life can often present, who needed hope and support, as well as those seeking therapy on a journey of deeper self-understanding. a I believe in change, personal growth and healing, not in the stigmatizing labels and assembly-line, "medicate-them-and-out-the-door" policies of modern managed care or HMO practice. a Psychotherapy must be non-judgmental. At its best, it should relieve us of the intolerable feelings or suffering that are our symptoms. It should provide hope for a better and freer life, and lower our burden of guilt and blame. This is true whether the problem is anxiety, depression, substance abuse, or relationship issues, like intimacy and couples communication.

Where can I get more information?
What are anxiety disorders? Anxiety disorders range from feelings of uneasiness to immobilizing bouts of terror. This fact sheet briefly describes the different types of anxiety disorders. This fact sheet is not exhaustive, nor does it include the full range of symptoms and treatments. Keep in mind that new research can yield rapid and dramatic changes in our understanding of and approaches to mental disorders. If you believe you or a loved one has an anxiety disorder, seek competent, professional advice or another form of support. Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Most people experience anxiety at some point in their lives and some nervousness in anticipation of a real situation. However if a person cannot shake unwarranted worries, or if the feelings are jarring to the point of avoiding everyday activities, he or she most likely has an anxiety disorder. Symptoms: Chronic, exaggerated worry, tension, and irritability that appear to have no cause or are more intense than the situation warrants. Physical signs, such as restlessness, trouble falling or staying asleep, headaches, trembling, twitching, muscle tension, or sweating, often accompany these psychological symptoms.

All children experience anxiety. anxiety in children is expected and normal atspecific times in development. For example, from approximately age 7 months
http://www.aacap.org/publications/factsfam/anxious.htm
T HE A NXIOUS C HILD No. 47 All children experience anxiety. Anxiety in children is expected and normal at specific times in development. For example, from approximately age 8 months through the preschool years, healthy youngsters may show intense distress (anxiety) at times of separation from their parents or other persons with whom they are close. Young children may have short-lived fears, (such as fear of the dark, storms, animals, or strangers). If anxieties become severe and begin to interfere with the daily activities of childhood, such as separating from parents, attending school and making friends, parents should consider seeking the evaluation and advice of a child and adolescent psychiatrist. One type of anxiety that may need treatment is called separation anxiety. This includes: o
  • constant thoughts and fears about safety of self and parents
  • refusing to go to school
  • frequent stomachaches and other physical complaints
  • extreme worries about sleeping away from home
  • overly clingy
  • panic or tantrums at times of separation from parents
  • trouble sleeping or nightmares
Another type of anxiety (phobia) is when a child is afraid of specific things such as dogs, insects, or needles and these fears cause significant distress.

119. Math Anxiety
Short overview of some of the main causes of this condition in a table format.
http://www.uvm.edu/~jrosebus/mathanxiety.html
One of my areas of particular interest is math anxiety. In fact, I did my masters thesis on math anxiety in 1978. I am continuing my research in this area. Over my years of teaching, I have discovered some skills that are important for all students to know. I have learned that much of what I state is not as obvious to all as I had first suspected. I share this information with you because I want every last one of you to succeed. First of all , I would like to share with you some opinions that many students have. I would like to clear up any misperceptions that you might have. Along the way, I will be sharing with you my bias about the learning of higher mathematics.
IDEAS THOUGHTS Math As a Second Language Okay, learning math is like learnning a foreign language. Practice is as important in math as it is in learning a foreign language. Missing Link Sometimes the difficulty that students have in higher level courses is having not learned the essential skills in elementary school: fractions and decimals, for example. The higher level material comes easily, provided the student has a good grasp of the basics. Fear of Being Too....Smart or Not
