OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions and compulsions (or rituals) which interfere with one's social, school, or occupational functioning. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV; American Psychiatric Association, 1994): Obsessions are recurrent, persistent ideas thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced as intrusive and inappropriate, and cause marked anxiety or distress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors (e.g., handwashing, checking, ordering, hoarding,) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rule that must be applied rigidly.

What Is Social Anxiety? Social anxiety is the third largest psychological problem
in the world today... but few people understand this...

A woman hates to stand in line in the grocery store because she's afraid that everyone is watching her. She knows that it's not really true, but she can't shake the feeling. While she is shopping, she is conscious of the fact that people might be staring at her from the big mirrors on the inside front of the ceiling. Now, she has to talk to the person who's checking out her groceries. She tries to smile, but her voice comes out weakly. She's sure she's making a fool of herself. Her self-consciousness and anxiety rise to the roof... Another person sits in front of the telephone and agonizes because she's afraid to pick up the receiver and make a call. She's even afraid to call an unknown person in a business office about the electric bill because she's afraid she'll be "putting someone out" and they will be upset with her. It's very hard for her to take rejection, even over the phone, even from someone she doesn't know. She's especially afraid to call people she does know because she feels that she'll be calling at the wrong time the other person will be busy and they won't want to talk with her. She feels rejected even before she makes the call. Once the call is made and over, she sits, analyzes, and ruminates about what was said, what tone it was said in, and how she was perceived by the other person....her anxiety and racing thoughts concerning the call prove to her that she "goofed" this conversation up, too

Wednesday, 8 November, 2000, 01:55 GMT Smoking 'increases anxiety risk'
Teenage smokers may be storing up psychological problems
Smoking is supposed to calm the nerves, but researchers have found evidence that it might have the opposite effect. A team from the New York's Columbia University and New York State Psychiatric Institute found that smoking may increase the risk of some anxiety disorders for teens and young adults. They found that teenagers who smoke at least one pack of cigarettes a day are at greater risk of developing agoraphobia, generalised anxiety disorder, and panic disorder in young adulthood.
When a product exerts such profound influences on the brain, we should not be surprised if there are serious long term and negative consequences
Clive Bates, Action on Smoking and Health The researchers studied data on 688 teenagers from upstate New York. The teenagers were interviewed between 1985 and 1986, when their average age was 16, and between 1991 and 1993 when their average age was 22. When interviewed as teenagers, 39 (6%) smoked at least 20 cigarettes per day, and 44 (6%) had anxiety disorders.
