Like stage fright, math anxiety can be a disabling condition, causing humiliation, resentment, and even panic. Consider these testimonials from a questionnaire we have given to students in the past several years:
I've never been successful in any math class I've ever taken. I never understand what the teacher is saying, so my mind just wanders.
What all of these students are expressing is math anxiety, In this essay we will take a constructive look at math anxiety, its causes, its effects, and at how you as a student can learn to manage this anxiety so that it no longer hinders your study of mathematics. Lastly, we will examine special strategies for studying mathematics, doing homework, and taking exams. Let us begin by examining some social attitudes towards mathematics that are especially relevent.

Brief Overview of Anxiety Disorders

Brief Overview of Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are the most common psychiatric illnesses affecting both children and adults.

  • Anxiety disorders may develop from a complex set of risk factors, including genetics, brain chemistry, personality, and life events. An estimated 19 million adult Americans suffer from anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorders are highly treatable, yet only about one-third of those suffering from an anxiety disorder receive treatment.
Anxiety disorders are categorized as:
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) . GAD is characterized by excessive, unrealistic worry that lasts six months or more; in adults, the anxiety may focus on issues such as health, money, or career. In addition to chronic worry, GAD symptoms include trembling, muscular aches, insomnia, abdominal upsets, dizziness, and irritability. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) . In OCD, individuals are plagued by persistent, recurring thoughts (obsessions) that reflect exaggerated anxiety or fears; typical obsessions include worry about being contaminated or fears of behaving improperly or acting violently. The obsessions may lead an individual to perform a ritual or routine (compulsions)-such as washing hands, repeating phrases or hoarding-to relieve the anxiety caused by the obsession.

After The Deluge
NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 2-Long after the floodwaters here have receded and this critically wounded city has begun to mend, the mental health effects of the nation's worst natural disaster will linger. The American Red Cross, in recognition that catastrophes also leave mental and emotional damage in their wake, is coordinating and deploying psychiatrists, psychologists, and mental health counselors to storm-ravaged areas of the Gulf Coast. At the Astrodome in Houston, where about 25,000 evacuees from New Orleans have been transported, storm survivors are receiving clean food and water, a place to sleep, and, for those who need it, the services of volunteer mental health workers from Baylor College of Medicine, several campuses of the University of Texas Health Sciences Centers, and other area institutions.

Anxiety Disorders
"We paced along the lonely plain, as one who
returns to his lost road, and till he reaches
it, seems to go in vain. " Dante, "Purgatorio" The focus of our website is Recovery . We have been teaching people how to recover from their panic attacks and anxiety, for over fifteen years. Whether it be panic attacks and/or anxiety or an anxiety disorder such as Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or Generalised Anxiety Disorder, the various fears and symptoms keep people trapped no matter no matter how hard they try to break free.
Our approach to recovery from panic attacks, anxiety or an anxiety disorder is meditation and a mindfulness cognitive technique.
Meditation is the oldest cognitive technique in the world. It teaches us to go beyond our chattering, anxious thoughts and can lead us to a place of mental quiet and peacefulness.
