THE HIDDEN ANTHRAX LETTERS SUSPECT The FBI knows of a man who was caught entering the lab where the Anthrax used in the letters was kept, after he had been fired for a racially motivated attack on a co-worker. So, why is the FBI wasting its time with Steven Hatfill? News Story identifying Dr. Philip Zack as the man caught entering the Anthrax storage area at Fort Detrick without authorization. In this story, it is reported that Dr. Zack was caught on a security tape making an unauthorized entry into the Anthrax storage area. anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the sporeforming bacterium anthrax most commonly occurs in hoofed mammals and can also infect humans.
http://www.d2ol.com/anthrax.html
Overview Anthrax S mallpox ... Plague Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax most commonly occurs in hoofed mammals and can also infect humans.
Symptoms of disease vary depending on how the disease was contracted, but usually occur within 7 days after exposure. The serious forms of human anthrax are inhalation anthrax, cutaneous anthrax, and intestinal anthrax. Initial symptoms of inhalation anthrax infection may resemble a common cold. After several days, the symptoms may progress to severe breathing problems and shock. Inhalation anthrax is often fatal. The intestinal disease form of anthrax may follow the consumption of contaminated food and is characterized by an acute inflammation of the intestinal tract. Initial signs of nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, and fever are followed by abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Direct person-to-person spread of anthrax is extremely unlikely, if it occurs at all. Therefore, there is no need to immunize or treat contacts of persons ill with anthrax, such as household contacts, friends, or coworkers, unless they also were also exposed to the same source of infection.

Fort Detrick worker exposed to anthrax
From Kevin Bohn CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) An employee at the U.S. Army biological lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, has tested positive for exposure to anthrax, a spokesman said Friday. The employee, who had been previously immunized, is not sick but was put on precautionary antibiotics, base spokesman Chuck Dasey said. Low levels of anthrax spores were found in an administrative room and a service hallway outside a laboratory in one building, Dasey said. Medical assessments of employees were started after a scientist noticed a deposit on a flask in a laboratory where general anthrax research is conducted, he said. It appears any release of anthrax was accidental and was not related to terrorism, officials said. The deposit was not found in the area where tests are being done on the anthrax-laced letter that was sent to Sen. Patrick Leahy last year, Fort Detrick officials said in a written statement.

You Decide!! IMMUNIZATION WAIVERS
Many active duty, Guard and Reservists (officers and enlisted) have made it known they plan to refuse the Anthrax and possibly other vaccinations. This must be a personal choice, we encourage you to investigate whatever decision you make. There are those who have already declined the shots. They went to the Judge Advocate's office and utilized the "religious and moral objection" route. This will automatically make you ineligible for world-wide status. Perhaps there is no more stronger statement that we could make than to have a half a million of our military which can serve only in CONUS.
I am not encouraging you to disobey a direct order. however, the Pentagon has lied to us for the last six and a half years, why are we to believe they are telling the truth now. Read the information that exists on Anthrax with regard to safety and efficacy and then make an informed decision yourself.

Anthrax terror remains a mystery
Five people were killed and 13 others infected in last fall's anthrax attacks. From Susan Candiotti CNN WASHINGTON (CNN) Almost six months after anthrax letters began turning up in the mail, the mystery of who sent those deadly missives and why persists. There has been some progress. Authorities have narrowed to about two dozen the number of labs believed capable of making the deadly spores. Scientists also have learned the anthrax spores that filled letters to Sens. Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, and Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, were even purer than investigators thought. The anthrax's purity and potency makes it highly unlikely the killer could have made and treated the spores in a makeshift setting, according to officials involved in the massive investigation. "There are only so many people, so many places that this can be done," said Van Harp, the assistant FBI director leading the anthrax investigation.

Three medical specialists review the trials and errors
From Rea Blakey CNN Medical Correspondent (CNN) Six months after anthrax-by-mail attacks rocked the nation, the public health community is left with a series of lessons learned. They range from tracking the trail of exposure, to identifying inhalational-anthrax treatment options and effective crisis communication when bioterrorism strikes. Take the case of Washington postal worker Leroy Richmond. The odds were against the 57-year-old living to tell his story.

Photograph courtesy of USAMRIID Due to the recent cases of exposure to Bacillus anthracis and the tragic death of one individual in Florida during the first week of October 2001, there has been an increased amount of attention given to anthrax and the potential bioterrorist threat. This report is only a brief introduction and is not meant to provide any prescriptions, medical or otherwise. Anthrax describes the disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis , a naturally-occurring organism that has been weaponized in the past by both the United States and former Soviet Union for their respective biological warfare (BW) programs. There are three major routes of infection for anthrax: (1) the cutaneous form (most common), (2) gastrointestinal (from ingestion of microorganisms in contaminated meat, for example) and (3) inhalation anthrax. From 1900 to 1978, only 18 cases of inhalation anthrax were reported in the United States, two of these being laboratory acquired infections. The most rare in terms of its natural occurrence, inhalation anthrax is of great interest due to the potential of aerosolized Bacillus anthracis spores for bioterrorism.

WASHINGTON (AP) The Pentagon must stop forcing servicemen and women to take the anthrax vaccination against their will, unless President Bush signs a special order, a judge ruled Monday. Millions of shots have been given and hundreds of service members have been punished for refusing them since the mandatory vaccinations started in 1998. The judge ruled that the anthrax vaccinations fell under a 1998 law prohibiting the use of certain experimental drugs unless people being given the drug consent or the president waives the consent requirement.

Anthrax, pronounced as anthraks , is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . This rod-shaped microbe grows in soil, where it can be ingested by sheep, cows, horses and goats. Anthrax most commonly occurs in warm-blooded animals, but can also infect humans. Anthrax spores can be produced in a dry form (for biological warfare) which may be stored and ground into particles. When inhaled by humans, these particles cause respiratory failure and death within a week. Transmission to humans normally occurs through contact with infected animals but can also occur through breathing air laden with the spores of the bacilli. The disease is usually restricted to individuals who handle hides of animals (farmers, butchers, and veterinarians) or sort wool. There are three main types of anthrax: cutaneous, respiratory, and intestinal. Cutaneous : Most anthrax infections occur when the bacterium enters a cut or abrasion on the skin. Deaths are rare with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Postal facility undergoes anthrax cleanup
From Rich Dubroff
CNN
Story Tools WASHINGTON (CNN) Officials involved in efforts to rid a Washington postal facility of anthrax said Sunday they were satisfied that the fumigation procedure went well. "This process has gone much better than could have been expected," said Thomas Day, the U.S. Postal Service's vice president for engineering. "We've met all of our criteria. The fumigation has now been completed." The Brentwood facility in northeast Washington has been closed since October 21, 2001, after two employees died from inhalation anthrax. Earlier that month, employees at Brentwood had processed at least one anthrax-filled letter sent to Capitol Hill. The fumigation began Saturday afternoon and was completed by 8 a.m. EST Sunday. Ten minutes later, officials began the scrubbing process, which is slated to last until about 4 a.m. EST Monday.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT ANTHRAX PREVENTION AND TREATMENT
October 10, 2001
Q: Is there an approved treatment for anthrax? A: Yes. Three types of antiobiotics are approved for anthrax: ciprofloxacin, tetracyclines (including doxycycline), and penicillins. For people who have been exposed to anthrax but do not have symptoms, 60 days of one of these antibiotics is given to reduce the risk or progression of disease due to inhaled anthrax. Q: Does the government have a plan in place to make Cipro available if there were mass exposure to anthrax? A: Yes. Under emergency plans, the Federal government would ship appropriate antibiotics from its stockpile to wherever they are needed. Q: Should individual consumers ask their physicians to write a prescription for Cipro, so they have it on hand in case it's needed? A: No. Any needed antibiotics from the current stockpile will be made available if they are needed. In the meantime, Cipro should not be prescribed unless there is a clearly indicated need, so that the drug will be available as the need arises for the standard infections for which it is used. Q: What is FDA telling physicians and other health professionals about prescriptions for Cipro?

Gupta: Isolated anthrax case extremely rare
(CNN) A Florida man diagnosed with anthrax is an "isolated case," U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said, and his illness is not linked to any threats of bioterrorism against the United States. JFK Medical Center spokeswoman told CNN on Friday morning that the 63-year-old man from Lantana, Florida, remains in critical condition. CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta spoke to CNN anchor Aaron Brown about anthrax. BROWN: I've been in this line of work since I was 18 years old 30 years. I have never reported a case of anthrax in my career that I can remember. How rare is it, not just in this country, but anywhere? GUPTA: Aaron, there's only been 18 cases of inhaled anthrax between 1900 and 1976, and not a single case before today of inhaled anthrax over the last 25 years. I went to medical school here, I never saw a case. I think we glossed over it in textbooks. It's a very rare thing, and it took Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to be able to make the diagnosis.

N.Y. postal machines test positive for anthrax
NEW YORK (CNN) Six bar code sorting machines and a freestanding dust extractor have tested positive for anthrax at Manhattan's largest postal facility, the Postal Service said Thursday. MORE STORIES EXTRA INFORMATION Anthrax through the ages Preliminary tests found only four infected machines on the third floor of the Morgan Processing and Distribution Center, but more complete results Thursday showed more contamination. The facility will remain open while the machines are being decontaminated, said Postal Service area Vice President David Solomon. The Postal Service said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends an additional 50-day supply of antibiotics to Morgan employees who work on the second or third floors. Distribution is set to begin on Friday. More than 7,000 New York City postal employees received a 10-day supply of Cipro last week.
