Anthrax What are the symptoms of anthrax?
Symptoms of disease vary depending on how the disease was contracted, but symptoms usually occur within 7 days. Cutaneous: Most (about 95%) anthrax infections occur when the bacterium enters a cut or abrasion on the skin, such as when handling contaminated wool, hides, leather or hair products (especially goat hair) of infected animals. Skin infection begins as a raised itchy bump that resembles an insect bite but within 1-2 days develops into a vesicle and then a painless ulcer, usually 1-3 cm in diameter, with a characteristic black necrotic (dying) area in the center. Lymph glands in the adjacent area may swell. About 20% of untreated cases of cutaneous anthrax will result in death. Deaths are rare with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Inhalation: Initial symptoms may resemble a common cold. After several days, the symptoms may progress to severe breathing problems and shock. Inhalation anthrax is usually fatal. Intestinal: The intestinal disease form of anthrax may follow the consumption of contaminated meat and is characterized by an acute inflammation of the intestinal tract. Initial signs of nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, fever are followed by abdominal pain, vomiting of blood, and severe diarrhea. Intestinal anthrax results in death in 25% to 60% of cases.

Sources: Anthrax same in Leahy, Daschle letters
WASHINGTON (CNN) Tests on a letter sent to Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, confirm the presence of anthrax, and its potent grade matches that contained in a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, sources told CNN Monday. The results confirm what investigators had been expecting. The letter and envelope have now been transferred to labs at FBI headquarters for further analysis, following their decontamination at a U.S. military lab at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the sources said. Investigators will look for fingerprints, hair, DNA, fibers anything that might help them determine who sent it. Results from those tests could take weeks. The DNA tests are not expected to yield much information because the letter sent to Leahy, just like the one sent to Daschle, were sealed shut with tape and no saliva was detected.

Anthrax traces found at Connecticut mail facility
HARTFORD, Connecticut (CNN) Trace amounts of anthrax were found on four pieces of mail-sorting equipment in a postal facility that handled the mail of a woman who died of inhalation anthrax, the United States Postal Service announced Sunday. The same facility processed mail for the town of Seymour, where one residence received a letter that was found to have a trace of anthrax on it. A statement from Postal Service said the traces of bacteria were found at the Southern Connecticut Processing and Distribution Center in Wallingford, which handles mail for the small towns of Oxford and Seymour. Oxford resident Ottilie Lundgren, 94, died November 21, becoming the nation's fifth anthrax fatality. Seymour resident John Farkas received a letter at his home that investigators found to have a trace amount of anthrax on the envelope. No one in Farkas' household is ill, health officials said. Bill Gerrish, a spokesman for the Connecticut Department of Health, called the discovery of traces of the bacteria at the postal facility an important finding in the investigation of Lundgren's death.

Capitol cop charged with anthrax hoax
With exposures, theats and fumigations, Capitol Hill has been a focal point of the anthrax crisis. WASHINGTON (CNN) A U.S. Capitol Police officer was indicted, arrested and arraigned Friday for perpetrating an anthrax hoax in a Capitol Hill security office in November. Officer James Joseph Pickett, 35, was indicted by a federal grand jury on one count of a making false statement and one count of obstructing Capitol Police. He was arrested and pleaded not guilty at his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Deborah Robinson, according to prosecutors for the U.S. attorney in the District of Columbia. According to the indictment, Pickett wrote an anonymous note November 7 and placed it in a Capitol Police security station with arrows directed to a nearby quantity of white powder. The note, written in capital letters, said:

Biological Warfare Defense Information Sheet ANTHRAX General information: The disease Anthrax is caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax is normally found in sheep, cattle and horses but can be transmitted to humans who contact infected animals or their products. Usually humans acquire the disease by skin contact with the bacteria or by inhaling the bacterial spores found in sheep wool. As an agent of biological warfare (BW), it is expected that a cloud of Anthrax spores would be released at a strategic location to be inhaled by the personnel under attack. As such, the symptoms of Anthrax encountered in BW would follow those expected for inhalation of spores,as opposed to those expected for skin contact or ingestion of the bacteria. These symptoms are discussed in the sections below. Disinfection of contaminated articles may be accomplished using a 0.05% hypochlorite solution (1 tbps. bleach per gallon of water). Spore destruction requires steam sterilization. The military chemical protective mask is effective against inhalation of all Biological Warfare Agents. Symptoms: About 1-6 days after inhaling Bacillus anthracis spores there would be a gradual onset of vague symptoms of illness such as fatigue, fever, mild discomfort in the chest and a possibly a dry cough. The symptoms would improve for a few hours or 2-3 days. Then, there would be sudden onset of difficulty in breathing, profuse sweating, cyanosis (blue colored skin), shock and death in 24-36 hours.

In this story: February 20, 1998 Web posted at: 3:30 p.m. EST (2030 GMT) FREDERICK, Maryland (CNN) Testing began Friday to determine if the substance seized from two suspects now under arrest in Nevada is the potentially deadly bacteria anthrax, law enforcement sources told CNN. At least partial results from the tests were possible later in the day. A source familiar with the investigation said a sample of the substance was flown in from Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas and arrived on Friday morning at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, located in Frederick, Maryland. Larry Wayne Harris and William Job Leavitt Jr. were arrested by the FBI on Wednesday night in Henderson, a Las Vegas suburb and were charged on Thursday with possessing a deadly germ for use as a weapon. The two-count complaint alleges conspiracy to possess and possession of a biological agent.

Bioterrorism is the use or threatened use of microorganisms or toxins to produce disease and/or death in humans, animals or plants. Bioterrorists undertake such actions to create fear and intimidate governments in the pursuit of idealological, political, or religious goals. Bioterrorism is insidious because biological agents are hard to detect upon covert release, they are nondiscriminate killers, and terrorists can protect themselves from the release and escape prior to the effect as it may take days to produce disease. Unlike conventional weapons, bioweapons are a relatively inexpensive means of eradicating people from an environment while preserving stuctures. At least 17 nations have offensive bioweapons programs. With the collapse of the Soviet Union and economic instability, the possibility exists that their research into weaponizing bioagents has been sold to terrorists. Weaponizing consists of processes designed to enhance delivery, stability, infectivity and/or lethality. Aerosol delivery is the most likely means of delivery for bioagents followed by water or food borne means, which are less likely due to logistics. In order to be delivered effectively by aerosol to the oral and nasal passages, particles must be very small (10 microns). They must be even smaller if they are to reach the

The shocking assertion is that a key member of the covert operation may have removed, refined and eventually posted weapons-grade anthrax which killed five people. In the wake of Sept 11th, the anthrax attacks caused panic throughout the States and around the world. But has the FBI found the whole case too hot to handle? Our science editor Susan Watts reported from Washington. SUSAN WATTS:
America's anthrax attack last autumn was second only to that on the Twin Towers in the degree of shock and anxiety it caused...Some even say the anthrax letters triggered sub-clinical hysteria in the American people...yet this, the first major act of biological terrorism the world has seen remains an unsolved crime... Initially the investigation looked for a possible Al-Qaeda or Iraqi link, then to a domestic terrorist, then inwards to the US bio-defence programme itself. But in the last four or five weeks the investigation seems to have run into the sand...There have been several theories as to why ...

As recently as June 14, 1998, 60 Minutes ran a story concerning the use of anthrax as a weapon in major cities such as New York and Boston. Earlier this year, Secretary William Cohen appeared on the This Week programme using a 5 lb. bag of sugar to demonstrate the amount of anthrax bacillus necessary to devastate a major metropolitan city. While much information is being presented about the threat of anthrax as a weapon of mass destruction, little information is being disseminated concerning the reasons why anthrax can be used as a weapon or how to respond to its use. While anthrax is in its simplest term, a hazardous material, it is a disease that has had a long standing presence in human history. This article is an effort to consolidate the mass of information concerning anthrax from multiple unclassified sources. Anthrax in History The disease of anthrax infections has a long history with mankind. It is a bacterium that primarily effects grazing animals, such as sheep, cattle, goats and horses. Anthrax was known to ancient cultures, and is described to have killed 40,000 horses and 100,000 cattle in the possession of the Huns during their movement across Eurasia in 80 AD. As a considerable bane to the European livestock trade, throughout the 18th and 19th century, much effort was put into the identification and prevention of anthrax in animals. Anthrax (scientific name Bacillus anthracis) was the first microorganism identified as the cause of a specific disease by Dr. Robert Koch in 1876. Later that year Dr. Koch was growing Anthrax bacillus in his laboratory. Within the decade, Louis Pasteur for use in livestock developed a viable anthrax vaccine.

WHO tries to calm anthrax fears
Envelopes containing suspicious powder have been found across the world GENEVA, Switzerland The World Health Organization has said the public should be vigilant but not panic in wake of anthrax cases in the United States. "The advice is to be vigilant, be cautious... (but) mass hysteria and panic is not a sensible response," a spokesman for the Geneva-based United Nations body said on Tuesday. At least 12 people have been exposed to anthrax, a potentially lethal germ, in the United States where one of the victims has died. U.S. authorities are treating the incidents as criminal attacks and have not ruled out a possible link to groups behind the suicide hijackings on September 11 in which more than 5,000 people died in the U.S.. There has also been a spate of alerts and scare elsewhere in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, France, the UK, Australia, Brazil, Israel all of which proved to be false alarms.

Anthrax Introduction
Anthrax is described in the early literature of the Greeks, Romans, and Hindus. The fifth plague, described in the book of Genesis, may be among the earliest descriptions of anthrax. Anthrax is caused by exposure to the spores of the bacteria Bacillus anthracis that become entrenched in the host body and produce lethal poisons. It is primarily a disease of grazing animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Pigs are more resistant, as are dogs and cats. Birds usually are naturally resistant to anthrax. Buzzards and vultures are naturally resistant to anthrax but may transmit the spores on their talons and beaks. The bacteria that cause anthrax are able to go into a dormant phase, in which they form spores. Spores can exist in the environment for decades. Under the right conditions, the dormant spores can germinate and multiply. If terrorists were to use the anthrax spores, they would most likely want to disperse it into the air for mass effect. As was seen in October 2001, terrorists could also deliver anthrax by other means, such as placing spores in letters or packages to be opened and inhaled and handled by unsuspecting recipients. People of any age may be affected. Most cases are mild and go away with treatment. Anthrax, however, can be lethal. There are several ways anthrax can cause illness. These are the 3 main ways anthrax affects humans:

Suspect German anthrax case a hoax
BERLIN, Germany Suspect letters and packages feared to have contained anthrax have proven to be hoaxes, German officials have said. The letter and two packages were initially thought to have been contaminated with anthrax after packets of white powder found inside the envelopes proved positive. The items, sent to the eastern state of Thuringia and the northern state of Schleswig-Holsten, would have signalled the spread of U.S-style biological attacks in western Europe if they had proven positive. But the national centre for disease in Berlin control gave the official all clear on Saturday after subsequent tests. Anthrax As Disinformation The Biology of the Subject
Propaganda on biological weapons including anthrax originates in the dark cellars of government for the purpose of swaying the public for increased police powers.
With the war in Iraq, the public is paying an expensive price for allowing themselves to be lied to instead of finding out the facts. Disinformation in Media
An example of the disinformation is an article in a news weekly during the mid nineties. It listed each of the supposed terrorist weapons and the cost of producing them. For $10-20,000, terrorists could supposedly kill hundreds of thousands of persons with botulism toxin, anthrax, nerve gas, etc. "60 Minutes" had an expert who said biological weapons could be produced in someone's back yard in a five gallon bucket. They said anthrax spores released from a boat on the Hudson River could kill four hundred thousand persons in New York City. Anthrax is Trivial Here's the truth of the matter. Anthrax cannot be weaponized by terrorists, and it could probably never be used successfully as a military weapon. It has to be converted to spores suspended in the air, which is technically very difficult; and the lethality is nowheres near the terror that it is made out to be. It is not 100% lethal as often claimed. Wool sorters inhale anthrax spores in small quantities continually (150-700 per hour, or

Pakistan to test 3 people for anthrax exposure
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) Pakistan's top health official said Saturday his agency would test three people suspected of anthrax exposure in Karachi, calling on a private laboratory that tested three envelopes for the bacteria to hand over its samples for further tests. Dr. Athar Saeed Dil said his organization, the Pakistan National Institute for Health, is the only body in the country that an confirm or deny the presence of anthrax. Earlier, the Pakistani science minister said that at least one of four suspect letters received at three locations in the country contained anthrax. No one thought to be exposed to anthrax has exhibited symptoms, he said. Science and Technology Minister Atta-ur-Rahman told CNN the letters were sent to a national newspaper, a computer company and a bank. One of the locations received two letters. ÊCNN.com Asia
