Cheney: 'Reasonable' to assume anthrax cases linked to terrorists
Cheney appeared Friday evening on the PBS news program "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" WASHINGTON (CNN) Vice President Dick Cheney said Friday it is "reasonable" to assume the recent anthrax cases in the United States are linked to the September 11 terrorist attacks, because Osama bin Laden's terrorist training manuals teach "how to deploy these kinds of substances." "If I received a letter that I didn't know where it came from, didn't recognize the sender, ... then I'd be suspicious of it. I'd have it checked," Cheney said in an interview on PBS' "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer." He urged Americans to be "more alert as a society" and to contact authorities if anything seems suspicious. "We just need to be more sensitive that there are, in fact, people in our midst who wish us ill," said Cheney.

The Biology
Anthrax
Botulism
Anthrax and botulism are not significant biological weapons. They are promoted for disinformation purposes.
The public is being propagandized on biological weapons, because some persons in the dark cellars of government are trying to get public support for an anti-terrorist campaign including increased police powers. Journalists and bureaucrats run wild with their imaginations, because they do not have a clue as to the biology of the subject. The reason why the diseases in question are not significant biological weapons is because they cannot be gotten into humans in significant quantities. The question is environmental conditions and delivery systems. Diseases are so specialized and demanding in their requirements that they will not do something beyond which they normally do. Therefore, the whole concept of bioweapons is unrealistic—that is, as military style weapons. However, militaries are researching contagious diseases, which is where the real problem is. A lot of experts describe the pathology of anthrax as if it were an imminent peril. The pathology doesn't tell us whether Iraq or terrorists can weaponize the spores. They can't. Iraq uses anthrax in liquid form, which is totally ineffective.

Anthrax traces found at Washington VA hospital
WASHINGTON (CNN) A mailroom in the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center has tested positive for anthrax, the federal agency reported Saturday. The mailroom is located in a hospital that houses 250 patients but is not near patient areas, said Phil Budahn, the VA's media relations director. But, he added, hospital officials are keeping "a close eye on patients." Swabs were taken in the mailroom October 30 because the hospital receives its mail from the main Brentwood branch post office in Washington, the facility that processed an anthrax-laden letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle. Two Brentwood postal employees have died of inhalation anthrax, and two others are hospitalized with the same disease. Of the 22 swabs, one was positive, Budahn said. Administrators closed the mailroom, he said.

FBI and Postal Service agents conducted a second search of the apartment of former Army researcher Steven Hatfill. From Kelli Arena CNN Washington Bureau FORT DETRICK, Maryland (CNN) The FBI on Friday sifted through documents and other materials gathered from the Maryland home of a former government researcher under scrutiny in the anthrax investigation. Law enforcement sources say materials are being tested and evaluated following Thursday's search of Steven Hatfill's apartment near the U.S. Army biowarfare defense lab in Fort Detrick, where he once worked. FBI agents have interviewed 500 people and issued 1,700 grand jury subpoenas as part of the investigation. But no one has been arrested in the attacks last fall which killed five people. Suspected anthrax hoaxer nabbed
WASHINGTON (CNN) Clayton Lee Waagner, the suspected author of hoax letters sent to abortion clinics that claimed to be contaminated with anthrax, was arrested Wednesday after eluding authorities for months, according to federal authorities. Law enforcement sources said the arrest was made shortly after 1 p.m. in the Cincinnati suburb of Springdale, Ohio, after an employee at a Kinko's photocopy store called the U.S. Marshals Service saying she believed Waagner was in the store. Marshals quickly called local police who responded within minutes. An officer entered the Kinko's, while Waagner hastily logged off a computer and ran outside, where more officers were waiting, said Geoff Shank, a senior inspector with the Marshals Service. "They got him within seconds," said Shank. "It was an incredible ending."

10 things you need to know about anthrax
(CNN) The following questions and answers about anthrax are provided courtesy of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia. 1. What is anthrax? Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. It most commonly occurs in mammals such as cattle, sheep, goats, camels and antelopes, but can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals or tissue from infected animals. 2. How common is anthrax and who can get it? Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. Humans infected with anthrax usually have been exposed to infected animals or their products through their occupations. Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products from other countries where anthrax is more common may become infected with Bacillus anthracis. 3. How is anthrax transmitted?

anthrax
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis and is highly lethal in its most virulent form. Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and domestic herbivores, but it can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals, tissue from infected animals, or high concentrations of anthrax spores. Still there are no case of people who got sick through contact with a diseased person. Anthrax means "coal" in Greek, and is used because victims develop black skin lesions. Anthrax infection is rare but not remarkable in herbivores such as cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and antelopes. Anthrax can be found globally. It is more common in developing countries or countries without veterinary public health programs. Certain regions of the world (South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East) report more anthrax in animals than others. Means of infection Anthrax can enter the human body through the intestines, lungs (inhalation), or skin (cutaneous). Anthrax is non-contagious, and is unlikely to spread from person to person. Pulmonary (pneumonic, respiratory, inhalation) anthrax infection initially presents with cold or flu-like symptoms for several days, followed by severe (and often fatal) respiratory problems. If not treated soon after exposure, before symptoms appear, inhalation infection is the most deadly, with a nearly 100% mortality rate. A lethal case of anthrax is reported to result from inhaling 10,000-20,000 spores. This form of the disease has also been known as Woolsorters' disease. Other routes have included the slicing up of animal horns for the manufacture of buttons, and handling bristles used for the manufacturing of brushes.

Economy on the front burner
Bush, shown here reading to third graders, plans to start the year with a focus on the economy and education. SUMMARY: The "E's" have it for President Bush, who has committed to concentrating on education and the economy, and he will begin pushing that agenda Saturday. But Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle started 2002 with a fresh assault on Bush's tax cut plans. In New York, the medical examiner determined the identities of the remains of seven people found at the World Trade Center site. UPDATE: Scott McClellan, White House deputy press secretary, said Bush's "first priority" this year will be urging Congress to pass what the White House now calls an "economic security" plan, measures to help laid-off workers and tax cuts to give a boost to the economy. ( Full story Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle delivers a speech Friday, but has already launched an election-year debate over the economy with a fresh slap at President Bush's tax cuts and a call for a "growth agenda" for a country hammered by terrorism and recession. "We can shortchange critical needs, such as strengthening homeland security, or we can raid the Social Security surplus and borrow money to pay for them," he said. "We cannot have it both ways." (

By Barbara Hatch Rosenberg 22 September, 2002 PURCHASE, N.Y. On this first anniversary of the anthrax attacks, a number of conclusions can be drawn even without an arrest by the FBI. First, the strain and properties of the weaponized anthrax found in the letters show that it originated within the U.S. biodefense program, where the necessary expertise and access are found. Government officials recognized that the anthrax source was domestic less than two weeks after they learned of the letters, and nothing in their investigation has led them to say otherwise since. One can also conclude that, given the origin of the anthrax and the warnings contained in the letters, the perpetrator's motive was not to kill but rather to raise public fear and thereby spur Congress to increase spending on biodefense. In this, the attacks have been phenomenally successful.

Man suspected of having anthrax predicted attack
Harris told talk show Iraqis poised to strike
In this story: February 20, 1998 Web posted at: 10:15 p.m. EST (0315 GMT) LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) A man arrested on charges of possessing what is believed to be the deadly toxin anthrax predicted on a radio talk show the day before his arrest that the United States would be the target of a major biological attack within two years. Tuesday, Larry Wayne Harris, speaking on Talk America Radio Network's "The Buck Stops Here," gave a detailed description of what he said was a plot involving more than 200 "sleeper cells" of Iraqi students poised to unleash anthrax and bubonic plague bacteria on the American people. "The odds of us making it through even the end of this century without a major biological incident are very low," Harris said. Harris, 46, and William Leavitt Jr., 47, were arrested Wednesday night in a Las Vegas suburb after an informant called the FBI to report the two men told him they had anthrax. They are being held at the Clark County Detention Center.

You may have heard about anthrax and wondered what it is. Some people are worried that the germ that causes anthrax could be spread by people who want to use the disease as a weapon. Although this is a frightening thought, the government and police are working on ways to protect us. In the meantime, it's important not to panic over anthrax - the chance that you or someone in your family could ever get it is very small. One of the ways you can feel better is to learn about the disease. When you know what it is and how you can get it, it doesn't seem quite as scary. So here are answers to some questions you might have about anthrax:
    • What is anthrax?
Anthrax is an infection caused by bacteria (a type of germ) called Bacillus anthracis (say: buh- sil -us an- thray -sus). These bacteria make spores , a form of the germ covered by a protective shell. The spores can live for years in the soil, and they cause anthrax when they enter the body. Although the disease is most common in farm animals - like sheep, cows, and goats - there's a small chance that people can get it as well, usually from some type of contact with an animal or part of an animal that had anthrax.
    • How do people get anthrax?
