Bacillus anthracis and anthrax
Introduction The anthrax bacillus, Bacillus anthracis, was the first bacterium shown to be the cause of a disease. In 1877, Robert Koch grew the organism in pure culture, demonstrated its ability to form endospores, and produced experimental anthrax by injecting it into animals. Figure 1. Robert Koch's original photomicrographs of Bacillus anthracis, the agent of anthrax. Compare the cell morphology and spore position with the Gram stain below (Figure 2). This is Bacillus anthracis. Beware of phony and mislabled images of B. anthracis on the internet, including some that are posted by otherwise credible websites. Look for large cells with square ends and centrally-located ellipsoid spores when identifying Bacillus anthracis. Bacillus anthracis Bacillus cereus, which is found in soil habitats around the world, and to Bacillus thuringiensis, the pathogen for larvae of Lepidoptera. The three species have the same cellular size and morphology and form oval spores located centrally in a nonswollen sporangium.

Anthrax symptoms puzzle doctors
Officials have confirmed 18 infections since October
WASHINGTON (CNN) Doctors say they're intrigued and baffled by the case of a postal inspector who worked at an anthrax-contaminated office here, was admitted to a hospital with symptoms of the inhaled form of the disease, but never tested positive for the bacterium. Physicians wrote about the case in the latest issue of the The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. As a postal inspector, the patient was responsible for removing air filters in the part of the Brentwood Post Office that was contaminated with anthrax. Two other employees who worked at that office died of inhalation anthrax and another two were diagnosed with the disease. Complete coverage The patient cited in the article was never diagnosed with inhalation anthrax. The patient said he was wearing only a store-bought face mask while removing and changing the filters and said he inhaled large quantities of dust particles. The patient also reportedly inspected about 10 packages at high risk for containing anthrax.

Anthrax is an often fatal bacterial infection that occurs when Bacillus anthracis endospores enter the body through abrasions in the skin or by inhalation or ingestion. It is a zoonosis to which most mammals, especially grazing herbivores, are considered susceptible. Human infections result from contact with contaminated animals or animal products, and there are no known cases of human-to-human transmission. Human anthrax is not common, and only one of us has seen a case. Cutaneous anthrax, the most common form, is usually curable. A small percentage of cutaneous infections become systemic, and these can be fatal. Systemic infection resulting from inhalation of the organism has a mortality rate approaching 100 percent, with death usually occurring within

FBI giving polygraph tests in anthrax probe
Five people died in last fall's anthrax scare, but no arrests have been made. From Kelli Arena and Carol Cratty CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) The FBI is asking key scientists involved in the anthrax investigation to take polygraph tests, federal officials said Friday. The voluntary exams, which gauge the subject's truthfulness, mark authorities latest attempt to find out who mailed anthrax-laced letters to journalists and politicians last fall. "We haven't ruled anyone out as a suspect," an FBI official said Friday. As part of its investigation, the FBI is looking into the possibility that the person behind the anthrax attacks may have ties to a government lab. Complete coverage Authorities have narrowed the number of facilities believed to be capable of making the deadly spores to about 24 labs. But no charges have been filed against anyone thought to be involved in the anthrax mailings, which killed five people and infected 13 others.

How Anthrax Works
by Lee Ann Obringer Table of Contents Introduction to How Anthrax Works Where Does it Come From? How Does it Spread? What Happens When it Enters the Body? The Symptoms of Anthrax Diagnosis and Treatment Vaccine and Treatment Research Lots More Information The threat of anthrax as a biological weapon has become a real concern for everyone. Anthrax is a disease caused not by a virus, but rather by bacteria . There aren't any known cases of anthrax passing from one person to another, so it is considered to be noncontagious. It is still a large threat, however, because if it isn't recognized and treated quickly enough it can be deadly. Bacillus anthracis is the bacterium that causes the disease anthrax. It has historically affected herbivores like cattle, sheep or other grazing herds, but has also been a threat to humans who work with these animals and their by-products. While in the ground or on a surface, anthrax spores are relatively harmless, but once they come into contact with the right environment they begin to germinate. They need an environment that is rich in amino acids, nucleosides and glucose like those elements found in

Postal report to detail new procedures for anthrax contamination
HADDON HEIGHTS, New Jersey (CNN) Managers of local postal facilities will have the authority to close their facilities under new contamination-scare procedures drawn up by the U.S. Postal Service's investigator general, a New Jersey congressman said Monday. The new procedure is in a report on the handling of anthrax contamination at New Jersey's Bellmawr postal facility in November. The report will be made public later this month, but U.S. Rep. Robert Andrews, D-New Jersey, talked Monday about some details of the report. This book is truly an analysis of the facts that are currently known. The author does not have a political agenda; he is not a conspiracy theorist; and he sets out the facts in a clear and concise, highly readable narrative. As a result, many of the concepts and conclusions set forth in other print media are shown to be wrong and based upon faulty analysis. I have read many books on this subject, and this book is by far the most informative! The author has performed an outstanding service to our country in putting the anthrax letters in proper perspective." -

Anthrax vaccine gets good grade, but could do better
By Christy Feig CNN Medical Unit WASHINGTON (CNN) The current anthrax vaccine is safe and effective and can be used until a better one is developed, according to a report issued Wednesday by the Institute of Medicine. The report listed several drawbacks of the current vaccine, primarily that it must be given in six doses over 18 months. That means it wouldn't necessarily provide instant protection to a bioterrorism attack or help people quickly protect themselves. No vaccine is completely safe, the report said, but researchers found no unexpected short-term adverse reactions to the anthrax vaccine. However, the institute is urging the U.S. Department of Defense to create a system to monitor long-term health effects, of which evidence is limited. The only anthrax vaccine currently approved for human use in the United States is made by BioPort Corp. in Lansing, Michigan. It was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1970, primarily for veterinarians, workers who process animal hair, and scientists working with anthrax samples.

Alternate meanings in Anthrax (disambiguation)
Anthrax bacteria. Anthrax , called also splenic fever , is an acute infectious disease caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis and is highly lethal in its most virulent form. Anthrax most commonly occurs in wild and domestic herbivores, but it can also occur in humans when they are exposed to infected animals, tissue from infected animals, or high concentrations of anthrax spores. Still there are no cases of people who got sick through contact with a diseased person. Anthrax means " coal " in Greek , and is used because victims develop black skin lesions Anthrax infection is rare but not remarkably so in herbivores such as cattle sheep goats camels , and antelopes . Anthrax can be found globally. It is more common in developing countries or countries without veterinary public health programs. Certain regions of the world ( South and Central America , Southern and Eastern Europe Asia Africa , the Caribbean, and the Middle East ) report more anthrax in animals than others.

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) A self-described "terrorist" who told jurors that people who provide abortions should be shot was convicted Wednesday on charges that he mailed envelopes of fake anthrax to women's clinics in an attempt to shut them down. A federal jury deliberated more than three hours before finding Clayton Waagner guilty on 51 of 53 counts, including the most serious charge: threatening to use a weapon of mass destruction. Waagner, who once made the FBI's 10 Most Wanted list, could face decades in prison when he is sentenced. He is already serving a 49-year term for car theft and weapons violations. The quick conviction followed a 2.5 week trial, during which Waagner represented himself.

FBI agents set up two tents in the City of Frederick Municipal Forest Thursday. Story Tools
WASHINGTON (CNN) FBI anthrax investigators searched a pond in a Maryland state park Thursday for laboratory equipment that may have been dumped there, sources told CNN. The sources said the FBI received a tip that former U.S. Army biomedical researcher Steven Hatfill may have disposed of certain laboratory equipment in the pond in Gambrill State Park. The park is in a remote area of Frederick County near a residence where Hatfill once lived. No evidence has been found to support the allegation that something was dumped into any of the bodies of water in the park, according to a source. Hatfill, who once worked at the nearby U.S. Army biological lab at Fort Detrick, has been called a "person of interest" in the investigation into anthrax-laced letters that were mailed around the nation last year.

Florida anthrax patient dies
ATLANTIS, Fla. (CNN) A 63-year-old man hospitalized after contracting anthrax has died, hospital officials said Friday. Robert Stevens had been hospitalized since Tuesday when he checked himself into JFK Medical Center. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is heading the investigation into how Stevens contracted anthrax. The FBI is available to assist as needed. Palm Beach County health officials noted the case is not a criminal investigation, and they believe he contracted the disease naturally. Stevens fell ill after a recent trip to North Carolina and checked into a hospital Tuesday. A Florida state epidemiologist said he did not believe Stevens contracted the disease during his trip because the incubation period for anthrax is between six and 45 days, a period which would not have included his trip. Investigators report 'no clues' in latest anthrax death
A postal worker walks by the Bronx, New York, apartment building of anthrax victim Kathy Nguyen on Thursday. (CNN) Federal health authorities Thursday reported "no clues" that might link the anthrax death of a Bronx, New York, woman to tainted mail. They did say the strain of the bacteria that killed her was indistinguishable from that found in letters sent to a Senate office and two New York media outlets. "We haven't identified anything about this strain that's different from strains in the other areas," said Dr. Julie Gerberding with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She said that further analysis is needed before any firm conclusion can be drawn. Most of the 16 confirmed anthrax victims have been postal employees who are believed to have handled three contaminated letters postmarked in Trenton, New Jersey.

Friday morning, an already anxious public was jolted by news of a fourth case of anthrax, this one found in an unidentified female employee of NBC News in New York City. The disease in this case has been identified as cutaneous anthrax, a far less deadly type than the inhaled anthrax traced to the three tabloid employees in Florida. NBC officials say the woman, who is expected to fully recover, received and opened a suspicious letter on or around September 25th (the letter contained a powder substance, which tested negative for the disease). She reported the letter to the authorities, began getting tested for anthrax and started taking the antibiotic Cipro. She tested negative until this week, when she began exhibiting symptoms, including a lesion on her skin. FBI and CDC officials are on the scene in New York City; Mayor Giuliani says parts of Rockefeller Center will be closed off for a few days, and other NBC employees will be tested.
