FBI picks up 2 men suspected of having deadly anthrax
February 19, 1998 Web posted at: 2:35 p.m. EST (1935 GMT) NEW YORK (CNN) The FBI has taken two men into custody in Las Vegas after suspecting them of developing the deadly biological agent anthrax, top FBI sources told CNN on Thursday. The men, who are believed to be U.S. citizens, were picked up Wednesday night, after "FBI agents were told the two men had biological agents," the source said. An FBI official said that the two were charged with plotting to use a toxic biological agent as a weapon. FBI officials found an unknown substance at an undisclosed site, and dispatched the FBI Hazardous Materials Response Unit from Quantico, Virginia, to examine the material, the source said. A spokesman for Nellis Air Force Base, near Las Vegas, said authorities impounded a vehicle at the request of the FBI. The spokesman gave no further details. CNN was told that five U.S. Army specialists have gone to Las Vegas from the Army's Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. Four of the soldiers are with the Army's Technical Escort Unit, and one is a lab technician specializing in chemical and biological threats.

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: What is anthrax?
Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a CNN medical correspondent. Gupta, a practicing neurosurgeon, contributes health news stories to CNN.com. He joined the CNN.com chat room from CNN Center in Atlanta. CNN: Dr. Gupta, what is anthrax? And terrorism aside, what are the ways that people can contract it? GUPTA: Anthrax is a bacteria that forms spores that we've known about for a long time. In fact, anthrax was categorized as one of the first occupational hazards of ancient wool-sorters. It was a much more common infection years ago, but we've had very few natural cases over the last hundred years. Anthrax typically infects the skin in more than 95 percent of cases. It can also affect the GI tract, or actually be breathed in as inhalational anthrax. There have only been 18 confirmed inhalational cases from 1900 to 1976, and not a single case, before yesterday, over the last 25 years. Typically, the way people get it now is through the handling of animals or soil that contain the bacteria and its spores. CHAT PARTICIPANT: Is it true anthrax is really not detectable, and when you get sick is when you first know you have it?

What is anthrax?
  • Anthrax is a rare infectious disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Anthrax occurs naturally around the world in wild and domestic hoofed animals, especially cattle, sheep, goats, camels, and antelopes. It can also occur in humans when they are exposed to the bacterium, usually through handling animals or animal hides. There are three forms of anthrax infection: cutaneous (skin), inhalation (lungs), and gastrointestinal (stomach and intestine). If people have been intentionally exposed, as in a bioterrorist release, contact with skin would be the most likely route of exposure. Breathing in the spores that have been spread through the air could cause inhalation anthrax.

Police calm German anthrax fears
A policeman guards a sealed-off gas station in Wiesbaden WIESBADEN, Germany German police say initial tests on nine suspicious envelopes that created a panic in the town of Wiesbaden suggested none was carrying anthrax spores. The envelopes, bearing the message "The jihad is starting" spread fear in the Schierstein district where they were delivered on Wednesday morning. "There are no indications of anthrax," a police spokesman told a news conference on Thursday. He said the authorities had not yet ruled out the presence of some sort of biological or chemical agent. The envelopes had been taken to a Stuttgart laboratory for further testing. All 16 people who had come into contact with the envelopes were being kept under observation in hospital and given antibiotics as a precautionary measure. About 100 police and fire brigade officers were involved in the operation to seal the street and investigate.

Fever, malaise, fatigue, cough and mild chest discomfort is followed by severe respiratory distress with dyspnea, diaphoresis, stridor, and cyanosis. Shock and death occurs within 24-36 hours after onset of severe symptoms. Diagnosis: Physical findings are non-specific. A widened mediastinum may be seen on CXR. Detectable by Gram stain of the blood and by blood culture late in the course of illness. Treatment: Although effectiveness may be limited after symptoms are present, high dose antibiotic treatment with penicillin, ciprofloxacin, or doxycycline should be undertaken. Supportive therapy may be necessary. Prophylaxis: An FDA licensed vaccine is available. Vaccine schedule is 0.5 ml SC at 0, 2, 4 weeks, then 6, 12, and 18 months for the primary series, followed by annual boosters. Oral ciprofloxacin or doxycycline for known or imminent exposure. Isolation and Decontamination: Standard precautions for healthcare workers. After an invasive procedure or autopsy is performed, the instruments and area used should be thoroughly disinfected with a sporicidal agent (chlorine). OVERVIEW Bacillus anthracis

Anthrax scare at British Embassy in Beijing
Security has been increased around the U.S. and British Embassies By Lisa Rose Weaver CNN BEIJING, China (CNN) The staff of the British Embassy in Beijing has begun anti-anthrax treatment after a suspicious package containing white powder arrived at the embassy, a British Embassy spokesman told CNN Thursday. Initial tests by Chinese quarantine officials Wednesday came up negative for the anthrax virus, but additional testing was being conducted. "At the moment, the Public Security Bureau is investigating the source of the package, and the health and quarantine departments are investigating the contents of the package," said Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhu Bangzao. There was no sender's address on the package, but a letter inside was written in English, Zhu said without elaborating.

Source: Mailed anthrax was not old
From Kelli Arena CNN Washington Bureau WASHINGTON (CNN) A senior government official who wished not to be identified told CNN Saturday that testing has determined the deadly anthrax mailed to various places last fall was no more than two years old. This discovery lends credence to the theory that whoever mailed the finely milled anthrax spores known to be of the Ames strain has a current connection to a sophisticated laboratory. EXTRA INFORMATION In-Depth: Anthrax Investigators have long believed the suspect possessed a sophisticated knowledge of anthrax and a high level of training. Currently, many scientists who are knowledgeable about anthrax are taking polygraph tests and undergoing interviews as investigators try to uncover suspects. Still, investigators say they are far from solving the mystery of who sent the deadly spores.

Anthrax as a Biological Warfare Agent
  • Anthrax is the preferred biological warfare agent because: It is highly lethal. 100 million lethal doses per gram of anthrax material (100,000 times deadlier than the deadliest chemical warfare agent). Silent, invisible killer. Inhalational anthrax is virtually always fatal. There are low barriers to production. Low cost of producing the anthrax material. Not high-technology. Knowledge is widely available. Easy to produce in large quantities. It is easy to weaponize. It is extremely stable. It can be stored almost indefinitely as a dry powder. It can be loaded, in a freeze-dried condition, in munitions or disseminated as an aerosol with crude sprayers. Currently, we have a limited detection capability. What is Anthrax? Anthrax is a naturally occurring disease of plant eating animals (goats, sheep, cattle, wine, etc.) caused by the bacterium

Anthrax scare in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, Missouri (CNN) Authorities are investigating the possibility that a white powder inside a letter opened Monday in the Thomas Eagleton Federal Building in downtown St. Louis might be anthrax. Complete coverage "We ran a task force over there for an anthrax scare," said Fire Department Captain Bob Hennicke. The letter, whose postmark indicated it had been sent from out of state, was opened at 1 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) in the building's central mail location, said Don Hines, chief of public affairs for the U.S. Marshals Service in Washington. "Emergency protocols went into effect; the appropriate agencies were notified: haz-mat, fire, public health," he said. "They're on the scene right now conducting an investigation." Four people all mailroom staff were in the area where the letter was opened, he said.
