FDA Approval, Vaccination Program Resumed

On December 22, 2003, the US District Court ordered a halt on the mandatory requirement for military personnel to be vaccinated against anthrax. The military announced it will halt mandatory vaccinations, but continue voluntary anthrax vaccinations pending legal review. On December 29, 2003, the FDA ruled that the anthrax vaccine was effective against all forms of anthrax exposure. Subsequently, Federal District Judge Sullivan lifted the injunction against the military's anthrax vaccination program on 7 January 2004, except for the 6 military members filing the suit. On 8 January 2004, the military announced resumption of Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program.

Microsoft letter probably didn't contain anthrax, Nevada officials say
RENO, Nevada (CNN) A suspicious letter sent to a subsidiary of Microsoft "probably" did not contain anthrax, health officials said, adding that conclusive results may be available Saturday. Earlier, state health officials said the first test on the letter's contents "had tested presumptively positive for anthrax." But a second round of test results, released late Friday, did not show signs of the bacteria. Microsoft Licensing Inc., which handles licensing of Microsoft software and is based in Reno, received the letter, according to the Nevada Division of Emergency Management. If you receive a suspicious package:
  • Handle with care; don't shake or bump
  • Isolate and look for indicators
  • Don't open, smell or taste

    Anthrax
    Background
Anthrax is a disease normally associated with plant-eating animals (sheep, goats, cattle, and to a lesser extent swine). It is caused by the bacteria Bacillus anthracis and has been recognised as an illness for centuries. Once common where livestock were raised, it is now controlled through animal vaccination programs. Anthrax occurs mainly in countries where animals are not vaccinated. In many countries (such as Australia) it occurs infrequently, due to effective compulsory control measures.
    Anthrax in Australia
The Communicable Diseases Network Australia (CDNA) is a Commonwealth body with representatives from the Commonwealth, State/Territory health agencies and other Government and research bodies. CDNA meets on a regular basis and keeps track of disease outbreaks within Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region. It is within this forum that a case of anthrax would be reported. An anthrax outbreak would most likely be first recognised in animals, and immediate control measures would involve quarantine and notifying relevant health authorities to look for symptoms in humans.

New York City Hall received tape containing anthrax
var clickExpire = "-1"; //> SUMMARY: New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani confirmed Sunday that a tape sent by NBC News anchorman Tom Brokaw's office to City Hall contained anthrax. Giuliani said the tape was sent in the first week of October, before Brokaw's assistant tested positive for the cutaneous form of the disease. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has vaccinated about 140 members of epidemiologic teams that can be summoned at a moment's notice to examine a suspected case anywhere in the country, the New York Times reported Sunday. President Bush went to the radio Saturday to assure the public that officials are making progress in the anthrax investigation. "As we learn more about these anthrax attacks, the government will share the confirmed and credible information we have with you," Bush said, noting that health officials were acting quickly to distribute antibiotics for those who may have been exposed to the bacteria.

Scientist under scrutiny denies anthrax link
Dr. Steven Hatfill makes a public statement Sunday in front of his attorney's office in Alexandria, Virginia. ALEXANDRIA, Virginia (CNN) Former federal scientist Steven Hatfill said Sunday federal authorities are wrong to tie him to last year's deadly anthrax mailings and that he is appalled that his years of service had "been turned against me in connection with the search for the anthrax killer." "I am a loyal American and I love my country," Hatfill said. "I had nothing to do in any way, shape or form with the mailing of these anthrax letters. It is terribly wrong for anyone to contend or suggest that I have." Sunday was the first time Hatfill publicly addressed his identification as a potential suspect in last fall's mailing of anthrax to media outlets and congressional offices, which killed five people. Law enforcement officials have said Hatfill is one of 20 or 30 "persons of interest" in the anthrax investigation, but Hatfill and his attorney said that the scrutiny and apparent leaks to the media have made the 48-year-old scientist a top suspect in the public eye.

    What is anthrax?
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis . Anthrax most commonly occurs in warm-blooded animals, but can also infect humans. How common is anthrax and who can get it?
Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. These include South and Central America, Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Middle East. When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products. Workers who are exposed to dead animals and animal products (industrial anthrax) from other countries where anthrax is more common may become infected with B. anthracis. Anthrax in animals rarely occurs in the United States. Most reports of animal infection are received from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and South Dakota. How is anthrax transmitted?
Anthrax infection can occur in three forms:
    • cutaneous (skin), inhalation, and

A Review by: The Dude on the Right
Web www.entertainmentavenue.com The night was mostly a greatest hits night with John Bush handling all of the vocals since Joey Belladonna bailed on the tour (he was supposed to have joined - he even helped with the new CD, but in the end couldn't agree on the some contract aspects of the tour) and this seemed to be fine with the fans. I say this because every song was a sing-a-long. The crowd knew their parts, Bush belted out his parts, and the rest of the boys in the band nearly made my ears bleed (I forgot my earplugs - just another thing which would have made my night miserable had Anthrax not been so kick-ass great). Seeing Anthrax was one of those shows that renewed my faith in metal. Here was a band, through the good and the band, through band changes and band stability, that could rock the shit out of a crowd, some there from their clean-cut day jobs, some there with hair that any girl would love, some there who weren't alive when Anthrax first hit the music scene, and some there, at least one there, who didn't remember any Anthrax songs, but by the end of their hour and twenty minute set loved the guitar breakdown on, I think the song was called "Caught in the Mosh" and ending with "Bring the Noise."

Fertilizer found in car of anthrax hoax suspect, FBI says
CINCINNATI, Ohio (CNN) Investigators found a white, powdery substance later determined to be fertilizer in the car of the man accused of sending hoax letters that claimed to be contaminated with anthrax to abortion clinics. Edwin Boldt, an FBI spokesman, said that the substance was found loose inside the stolen car a Mercedes-Benz and in a container in the trunk. A rifle also was found in the trunk, according to authorities. Authorities found the substance, Boldt said, after searching the car for possible explosives last week. He said authorities suspect the fertilizer is the substance that was contained in the hoax letters. Tests are being conducted at a Columbus, Ohio, lab. Boldt said initial tests found the fertilizer was not hazardous.

    Anthrax
Anthrax is a disease caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis . It normally affects cattle, sheep, goats, etc. It is acquired from spores that remain viable in the environment (e.g. soil) for decades always able to germinate into active bacteria if they get into the body of a susceptible host. Humans can be infected by Bacillus anthracis, and if the spores enter by way of the lungs, the disease can be quickly fatal. These properties have made it one of the agents favored by bioterrorists. It is not the tissue-destructiveness of the active bacteria that is the problem but rather the toxin that they secrete. (This is like the illnesses caused by the bacilli that cause diphtheria tetanus , and botulism .) The bacteria are susceptible to antibiotics ( Ciprofloxacin doxycycline ), but they must be given early before the toxin can produce symptoms. Once the toxin is in the system, it can be neutralized by giving antitoxin antibodies [conferring so-called passive immunity ]. Presently these are harvested from donors who had received anthrax vaccine in the armed forces. But there is hope that monoclonal antibodies can be manufactured that will be able to provide protection.

Feds expected to increase anthrax case reward
WASHINGTON (CNN) The FBI and U.S. Postal Service are expected to announce on Wednesday that they're increasing to $2.5 million the reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of whoever mailed anthrax-laced letters last fall, according to a government official. Complete coverage The increase in the reward, which is now $1.25 million, is expected to be announced at a news conference in Trenton, New Jersey, where some of the letters were postmarked. Authorities say they hope that by increasing the reward they can generate new leads in the anthrax investigation that has so far failed to find the person behind the letters. Five people died from inhaling anthrax spores in Florida, the Washington area, New York, and Connecticut. Authorities also plan to release more information concerning the profile of a person who may have sent the letters.

Sources: Substance seized near Las Vegas non-lethal anthrax
Harris February 21, 1998 Web posted at: 1:30 p.m. EST (1830 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) The substance confiscated in Nevada from two men who were believed to be in possession of a biological agent is a non-lethal form of anthrax, CNN learned Saturday. U.S. Army experts at Fort Detrick, Maryland, concluded the substance was not a biological weapon after completing a series of tests that began Friday morning, sources told CNN. But this does not mean Larry Wayne Harris, 46, and William Leavitt Jr., 47, will be released from federal custody The FBI arrested Harris and Leavitt near Las Vegas, Nevada , on Wednesday and charged them with conspiracy to possess and possession of a biological agent. Sources told CNN the FBI has discovered additional materials at Harris' Ohio home. If the additional samples prove harmless, the U.S. Justice Department will have to decide whether they have grounds to continue holding the men in custody. The two are to appear at a court hearing on Monday. Meanwhile, earlier Saturday, a Columbus, Ohio police investigator said he believes Harris regularly gave some people injections that Harris claimed would protect them against biological agents.

Jonathan Karl: Anthrax on Capitol Hill
Jonathan Karl is a congressional correspondent for CNN. He joined the CNN.com chat room from Washington, D.C. CNN: Thank you for joining us today, Jonathan Karl , and welcome. JONATHAN KARL: Hello! CNN: Anthrax was discovered in yet another office area on Capitol Hill. What are the details? KARL: This is alarming, at least somewhat alarming, because they found a trace of anthrax in the section of the Hart building that's nowhere near Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle's office. Up until now, it's all been found right around Daschle's office. But now they've found a very small trace of anthrax in a completely different area. I should emphasize that it is described to us as a small trace. CNN: The House passed the antiterrorism bill yesterday. What does it entail, and did they do so in direct response to all that's happened on Capitol Hill directly?

    Soviet anthrax accident killed 60
By CNN Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Doughterty MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) In April 1979, there was an accident at "Compound 19," a Soviet military facility in the city of Sverdlovsk, now called Yekaterinburg. Within a few days, people needed hospital treatment. They had extremely high fevers and difficulty breathing. Years later, the hospital's chief doctor, Margarita Ilyenko, still cannot forget one of those patients. "He was still alive when I walked in ... a young man, we even talked a bit. Then suddenly spots began to appear all over his body, he vomited blood and died," she says. As more and more people fell ill, Soviet authorities blamed it on tainted meat.
