ANOSMIA
Hear this word spoken

Approximately two to five million American adults suffer from disorders of taste and smell. Anosmia is to smell, as blindness is to sight, or deafness is to hearing. Anosmics cannot detect scents of any kind. Over 200 medical conditions and many medications have been associated with olfactory changes and loss. "As a child without a sense of smell, it requires a considerable amount of thought to determine that something is missing. Blind children are told they can't see, but anosmic children have to find a way to work it out for themselves."
From: http://www.maxuk.net/fascin.html Are smell and taste disorders serious?
  • A person without a sense of smell is deprived of an early warning system. Smell and taste alert people to fires, poisonous fumes, leaking gas, and spoiled food.
  • Smell and taste losses can lead to depression.
  • Abnormalities in smell and taste functions frequently accompany and even signal the existence of several diseases or unhealthy conditions, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, malnutrition, and some degenerative diseases of the nervous system such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Korsakoff's psychosis.
Smell seems to be the sense people take most for granted. There are no galleries displaying smells like paintings, no concertos written for noses, no special menus of smells created for grand occasions; yet this is the most direct and basic of the senses.

anosmia
The loss of the sense of smell is an unusual symptom which should be taken seriously. It is frequently associated with decreased appetite since the olfactory sense plays a large role in food palatability. Significant weight loss may ensue. Diagnostic considerations:
  • nasal obstruction: polyps, sinusitis
  • trauma
  • viral illness
  • Kallman syndrome (a/w hypogonadism)
  • neurosyphilis
  • mass lesion (e.g., meningioma)
  • zinc deficiency

anosmia Anosmia is the lack of olfaction , or a loss of the sense of smell. It can be either temporary or permanent. A related term, hyposmia refers to a decrease in the ability to smell. Some people may be anosmic for one particular odor . This is called "specific anosmia" and may be genetically based. Anosmia can be diagnosed by doctors by using scratch-n-sniff odor tests or by using commonly available odors such as coffee, lemon, and cinnamon. A temporary loss of smell can be caused by a stuffy nose or infection. In contrast, a permanent loss of smell may be caused by death of

    Anosmia
    Definition
    • Anosmia is the loss of the sense of smell. Do not confuse this term with, insomnia , which is loss of sleep.
    • Hyposmia is a diminished (lowered) sense of smell. Anosmia can be considered complete hyposmia.
    • Dysosmia is a distorted sense of smell.
    Additional Info
Anosmia can be temporary or permanenent and can be induced by chemical exposure, head or brain injury, illness and other factors. Although it may at first glance appear to have no major impact or even some benefit in everyday life, anosmia means doing without the little joys of life - the scent of food, fresh air, fine wine etc. Anosmia can even be fatal. How?
      • Certain toxic chemicals have strong detectable odors at low levels. But at higher levels, these saturate your smell receptors ("olfactory fatigue ") and you can no longer smell the material. See MSDS Relevance below. An anosmic person can not smell smoke in a burning building.

About this research study
Have you lost your sense of smell after head trauma, or have you never been able to smell? A research group at the UCSD School of Medicine is interested in volunteers lacking the sense of smell for a research study. This study is testing the sensory response of persons with a normal sense of smell and those lacking a sense of smell to airborne substances commonly present indoors.
This project accepts normal volunteers. This is an outpatient study. Who is eligible?
  • Both males and females are eligible to participate Minimum age: 18 This study accepts normal volunteers and persons who have anosmia (lack of sense of smell) between age 18 and 70 and in good health
Are research subjects paid?
If you are accepted to participate in this study you will be paid $8.00/hour ($150.00 for completing study)

Anosmia
Definition
The term anosmia means lack of the sense of smell. It may also refer to a decreased sense of smell. Ageusia, a companion word, refers to a lack of taste sensation. Patients who actually have anosmia may complain wrongly of ageusia, although they retain the ability to distinguish salt, sweet, sour, and bitterhumans' only taste sensations. Description
Of the five senses, smell ranks fourth in importance for humans, although it is much more pronounced in other animals. Bloodhounds, for example, can smell an odor a thousand times weaker than humans. Taste, considered the fifth sense, is mostly the smell of food in the mouth. The sense of smell originates from the first cranial nerves (the olfactory nerves), which sit at the base of the brain's frontal lobes, right behind the eyes and above the nose. Inhaled airborne chemicals stimulate these nerves. There are other aberrations of smell beside a decrease. Smells can be distorted, intensified, or hallucinated. These changes usually indicate a malfunction of the brain.
The most common cause of anosmia is nasal occlusion caused by rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal membranes). If no air gets to the olfactory nerves, smell will not happen. In turn, rhinitis and

Anosmia
Initially, I regarded this page as something of a self-indulgence, since I doubted that the information would be of much use to anyone else. I was basically just trying to raise awareness about this condition. However, since I put it up, I have received many kind words from fellow anosmics who've found it useful, which was a pleasant surprise. Anyway, on with the important stuff... I have a condition called anosmia, which means that I don't have a sense of smell. This condition is pretty rare - in fact, most of the doctors I've been to have claimed that it doesn't exist at all, and that I'm a liar, which was rather frustrating. Actually, I found out that this was the name for it on a McDonald's "Trivial Pursuits" card from a promotion they had about ten years ago. You can verify this by looking the word up in a standard (i.e. not medical) dictionary. Here is a basic FAQ about anosmia, to save time in conversations: Q: So, you can't smell anything at all?
A: Nope, nothing at all. Never have, probably never will. Q: How about a really smelly sock?

Anosmia
Anosmia is the lack of a sense of smell. It can be congenital, with a person living an entire life without smelling anything, or it can occur later in life after trauma or subsequent to some illnesses and disorders. People with anosmia have a serious disability because they cannot smell smoke, gas, or other dangerous substances. Unfortunately, because of a lack of awareness about anosmia in the general population and because most people who can smell take it for granted and do not realize how important a role it plays in their lives, anosmia is generally not accepted as a real disability.

Alternate Names : Anosmia, Loss of Smell Definition This is the loss or impairment of the sense of smell. The loss of smell is usually an insignificant result of nasal congestion or obstruction, but it can sometimes indicate a neurological disorder. Loss of the sense of smell may be idiopathic (without any identifiable cause).
Some loss of smell occurs normally with aging. In most cases, there is no obvious or immediate cause, and there is no treatment.
