Here is an example of an atherosclerotic aneurysm of the aorta in which a large "bulge" appears just above the aortic bifurcation.Such aneurysms are prone to rupture when they reach about 6 to 7 cm in size. They may be felt on physical examination as a pulsatile mass in the abdomen. Most such aneurysms are conveniently located below the renal arteries so that surgical resection can be performed with placement of a dacron graft.

Cerebral aneurysms
A cerebral aneurysm is an area of the blood vessel in the brain which becomes weakened over time. As the area becomes weaker, it begins to bulge out like a tiny balloon. The more pressure on the balloon, the higher the risk of a leak or break in the area. When the balloon leaks or ruptures, blood escapes into the surrounding tissue, causing a hemorrhage. Sometimes the aneurysm does not rupture but causes pressure on one of the small nerves leaving the brain. Aneurysms occur in about 2 percent of the general U.S. population and can be caused by one or more of the following:
  • High blood pressure or hardening of the arteries in the brain.
  • A blood clot that goes to the brain.
  • Some types of infection (called Mycotic aneurysm).
  • Injury or trauma to the head.
  • Genetics or a condition you were born with.

This article is in need of attention editing it into a better article
Please also consider changing this notice to be more specific An aortic aneurysm is a general term for any swelling ( dilatation or aneurysm ) of the aorta , usually representing an underlying weakness in the wall of the aorta at that location. While the stretched vessel may occasionally cause discomfort, it is the risk of rupture causing severe pain, massive internal hemorrhage and, without prompt treatment, resulting in a quick death. In addition the aneurysm may split ( Aortic dissection ) which may block vessels that branch off from the aorta or release blood clots ( emboli ) causing blockage to blood-flow elsewhere.

The physical change in the aortic diameter can occur secondary to an intrinsic defect in the protein construction of the aortic wall, trauma, infection, or due to progressive destruction of aortic proteins by enzymes. Brain Aneurysm Overview
An aneurysm is an abnormal widening or ballooning of a portion of a blood vessel. A cerebral aneurysm refers to a blood vessel within your brain that weakens over time and undergoes such widening. This usually occurs at the junctions of the large arteries at the base of your brain, in an area called the Circle of Willis. As the blood vessel weakens, it begins to bulge out like a balloon. Often, as an aneurysm develops, it forms a neck with an associated dome, or balloonlike structure. The larger the balloon becomes, the greater the risk it may burst. You would then bleed into your brain. Currently no one can predict which aneurysms will rupture. Data suggest that aneurysms that rupture tend to be larger than 10 mm (0.4 in). About 25,000-30,000 cases of ruptured aneurysms occur in the US each year. About 40% of the people who suffer bleeding from an aneurysm die within the first month. Approximately another one third have residual major nervous system problems but survive. Many are left with long-term memory problems. They may have difficulty in the following: thinking, perception, and performing simple daily activities.

Memorial Hermann Hospital Houston, Texas- Bursting aortic aneurysms kill an estimated 15,000 Americans each year, but patients with chronic health problems sometimes can't withstand the traditional surgery used to prevent rupture. Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair, or EVAR, offers a minimally invasive alternative for such patients. On May 25 at 5:30 p.m. CDT, vascular surgeon Ali Azizzadeh, M.D., performed an EVAR procedure carried live in a global Webcast from Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas. Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair An aneurysm is the ballooning of an artery that weakens the blood vessel's walls. Some patients may experience shortness of breath or pain in the back or neck, but most feel no symptoms until the aneurysm ruptures. Physicians often find aneurysms when patients undergo CT or MRI scans for other ailments. More than 100,000 are diagnosed each year before rupture. Endovascular Aortic Aneurysm Repair The stakes are high when treating the body's largest blood vessel. Doctors don't recommend intervention until an aortic aneurysm grows to five to six centimeters in diameter and the risk of rupture exceeds the surgical risks. The larger an aneurysm, the more likely it will burst and cause massive, often fatal, internal bleeding.

Memorial Hermann Hospital Houston, Texas- More than 10,000 Americans die from ruptured aortic aneurysms each year, and at least another 100,000 are diagnosed before rupture, typically as the result of an imaging procedure. According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the incidence of aneurysms has substantially increased in recent decades. Surgery is the only recognized effective treatment. Join the Discussion! Thoracoabdominal Aneurysm Repair Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas, will broadcast live over the Internet a thoracoabdominal aneurysm (TAA) repair to treat a potentially life-threatening aortic aneurysm. You can view the webcast on November 17th at 5:30pm CT. "It's one of the most extreme cardiovascular procedures a man or woman can tolerate," says Dr. Hazim Safi, Chairman and Chief of the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Memorial Hermann Hospital and The University of Texas Medical School at Houston. "Because the aneurysm involves the portion of the aorta that is in the chest as well as the portion that is located in the abdomen, the patient is almost literally cut in half."

An aneurysm is an area of a localized widening (dilation) of a blood vessel. (The word "aneurysm" is borrowed from the Greek "aneurysma" meaning "a widening"). What is an aortic aneurysm?
An aortic aneurysm involves the aorta, one of the large arteries that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The aorta bulges at the site of the aneurysm like a weak spot on an old worn tire. What are the thoracic and abdominal aorta?
The aorta is first called the thoracic aorta as it leaves the heart, ascends, arches, and descends through the chest until it reaches the diaphragm (the partition between the thorax and abdomen). The aorta is then called the abdominal aorta after it has passed the diaphragm and continues down the abdomen. The abdominal aorta ends where it splits to form the two iliac arteries that go to the legs. Where do aortic aneurysms tend to develop?

A brain aneurysm is an abnormal widening of an artery or vein in the brain. Brain aneurysms are caused by a weakness in the wall of an artery or vein within the brain. How does a brain aneurysm occur?
Brain aneurysms may result from a congenital malformation (birth defect) of a blood vessel, high blood pressure which damages the blood vessels, arteriosclerosis (build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries), or head trauma. Who is at risk for a brain aneurysm?
Brain aneurysms can occur at any age. Although they are more common in adults, they can and do occur in children. Is there any warning before an aneurysm ruptures?
The onset of bleeding from a ruptured brain aneurysm is usually sudden and without warning. Sometimes, however, the individual may experience the sudden onset of symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, vision impairment, vomiting, and loss of consciousness before the aneurysm ruptures. How serious is the rupture of a brain aneurysm?

The abdominal aorta is a large blood vessel that supplies blood to your abdomen, the pelvis, and legs. Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top The exact cause is unknown, but risk factors for developing an aortic aneurysm include high blood pressure , smoking, high cholesterol, and obesity. An abdominal aortic aneurysm can develop in anyone, but it is most frequently seen in people over 50 with one or more risk factors. The larger the aneurysm, the more likely it is to rupture. When an abdominal aortic aneurysm ruptures, it is a true medical emergency. Aortic dissection occurs when the innermost lining of the artery tears and blood leaks into the wall of the artery.
