Thomas Scott Davidson This page is dedicated to the memory of our son, Scott. Click on any of the highlighted words to find further information on that subject as you read this page. Scott was born at Harris Methodist Hospita l in Bedford, Texas on March 18, 2003 at 8:55 pm to Darlene and Troy Davidson. He weighed only 5.9 ounces, and was at that moment both the greatest joy, and the greatest sorrow that his parents have ever known.
Scott was stillborn, delivered in only his 20th week due to a tragic twist of genetic fate known as anencephaly . This condition, whose cause is generally unknown, prevents portions of the skull, and sometimes the spinal cord, from developing properly, condemning its victim to inescapable death.
Although his life had passed before we ever laid eyes on him, we loved our son from the moment we knew about him, and treasure each moment we had to spend with him, knowing in our hearts that he is waiting for us even now in heaven, our little angel. Knowing that our time with him would be short we tried to capture every memento of his existance that we could, and we would like to share some of them with you including some photos,

Midi playing is: Hello-Goodbye by Michael W. Smith. Respectfully used with permission from Yeshua's Ministry This song was played at Jasmine's memorial. I discovered I was pregnant with our second child almost immediately. I think I sensed when I became pregnant with her. I told Rob, my husband and he said, "Already!" A home pregnancy confirmed my suspicions. At the time, our daughter, Jordan was just turned 2. I couldn't wait to give her a sibling. I dreamed of having a girl, another sweet girl to raise and love. I dreamed of having a boy, a miniature of my husband. Either way, I just wanted a healthy baby. Right from the start though, I felt there was something different about this pregnancy. Instead of gaining weight in the first trimester, I was losing weight. The midwife at the practice I went to did not seem worried, so I put it in the back of my mind. My due date was set for June 26, 1999. Once I made it through the first trimester, what could go wrong? I was so innocent.
The next morning, I woke early and went downstairs. I fell to my knees and cried out to God. I said, "This is too much to bear, Lord!" He gave me two scriptures:

Spina Bifida and Anencephaly
(Neural Tube Defects)
What are spina bifida and anencephaly?
Spina bifida and anencephaly are neural tube defects (NTDs), which are common birth defects that affect thousands of babies each year in the United States. The neural tube is an early stage of the developing nervous system in the embryo. How does spina bifida occur?
Spina bifida results from the failure of the spinal column to close, usually near the bottom of the spinal cord. What problems does spina bifida cause?
Persons with spina bifida usually have serious disabilities. Legs and feet are often paralyzed, and there are problems with bowel and bladder control. Learning disabilities are common and mental retardation sometimes occurs. How does anencephaly occur?

Anencephaly
Anencephaly is a fatal neural tube defect in which the cerebral hemispheres do not develop. Typically some brainstem tissue is present, but it is anatomically highly disorganized. Prenatal screening for neural tube defects has significantly decreased the number of births of infants with anencephaly, and correction of folate deficiency (now known to be an etiologic factor) is expected to reduce the incidence even further. It has been recommended that all women of childbearing age take folate supplements to reduce the risk of this devastating anomaly. With no upper brain development, there is no development of the calvarium. The result is that the eyes and eyelids are the topmost part of the body, giving the head a "frog-eyed" appearance. The side view, shown above, brings to mind some of the depictions of people and gods in Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican art. One could idly speculate that these early artists were inspired by sporadic anencephalic births among their people. The anterosuperior view of the head, shown below, demonstrates the disorganized connective tissue membrane that, in the absence of the calvarium, covers the top of the skull. These photos were shot with a Nikon FE2 on Kodak Elite daylight film, ISO 100, with a blue filter to correct for tungsten illumination.

Daniel's Story
We found out we were pregnant with Daniel in August 1991.We had only been married a few weeks but were over the moon because I had only ever wanted to be a mummy.
We spent all our time from then on popping in and out of baby shops looking at things we were going to buy.
I was very, very sick and seemed to be spending whole days with my head down the toilet and mentioned it to the doctor who said not to worry because it was quite normal. Apart from that we progressed nicely and had no problems, by 14 weeks even the sickness had stopped.
I was really getting into the whole idea of being pregnant by now and spent large amounts of time just talking to my stomach, I wanted my baby to know my voice when it arrived.

Cephalic disorder
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Anencephaly Cephalic disorders are congenital conditions that stem from damage to, or abnormal development of, the budding nervous system . Cephalic is a term that means " head " or "head end of the body." Congenital means the disorder is present at, and usually before, birth Cephalic disorders are not necessarily caused by a single factor, but may be influenced by hereditary or genetic conditions, nutritional deficiencies, or by environmental exposures during pregnancy , such as medication taken by the mother, maternal infection, or exposure to radiation (such disorders are more common in areas of the former Soviet Union affected by nuclear waste disposal problems, such as the area around the Mayak plant in Chelyabinsk Russia .) Some cephalic disorders occur when the cranial sutures (the fibrous joints that connect the bones of the skull ) join prematurely. Most cephalic disorders are caused by a disturbance that occurs very early in the development of the

In this case from 1991, a 19-week fetus with elevated alpha-fetoprotein is scanned for amniocentesis.
Imaging Findings
Ultrasound Examination
Ultrasound examination indicates that the cranium and brain are not formed. The calvarium is not visible above the orbits. Moderate polyhydramnios is apparent.
Diagnosis
Anencephaly
Discussion
After 12-13 gestational weeks, the normal fetal brain should be readily visible on transabdominal sonographic examination. Anencephaly will result if there is failure of complete fusion of the neural tube. This is the most common and most severe form of open neural tube defect and has a 5% rate of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies. Ultrasound findings include absence of the cranium cephalad to the orbits and bulging eyes ("frog-like" appearance). Polyhydramnios, which is attributed to insufficient fetal swallowing, occurs in 40-50% of cases after 26 weeks gestational age.
