ANAL FISSURE WHAT IS AN ANAL FISSURE? An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anus. It can cause pain, bleeding and/or itching.
WHAT CAUSES AN ANAL FISSURE? It is usually caused by a hard and dry bowel movement which tears the anal lining. Other causes include diarrhoea and inflammation of the anorectal area. HOW CAN A FISSURE BE TREATED? At least 50 percent of fissures heal by themselves without need for an operation. Application of special medicated cream, use of stool softeners, avoidance of constipation, and the use of sitz baths (soaking the anal area in plain warm water for 20 minutes, several times a day) help to relieve the symptoms and allow healing to occur. WHAT IF A FISSURE DOES NOT HEAL? A fissure that does not heal should be reexamined to determine if an underlying problem that prevents healing exists. This could be due to scarring or muscle spasm of the internal anal sphincter muscle. Those which continue to cause pain and/or bleeding can be corrected by surgery. WHAT HAPPENS AT SURGERY?

Anal fissure, can it change the results of an anal PAP smear?
Jan 12, 2003 Does the presence of anal fissures lead to a negative result in an anal pap smear. thank you. Response from Dr. Dezube In general an anal fissure won't change the results of a Pap smear. However, if there were to be inflammation because of the fissure, than that could affect the results of a Pap smear. The same is true for hemorrhoids (see my post to thebody.com in December 2002 on this subject). If your anal fissure is acting up, then I would recommending postponing the anal Pap smear until the situation settles down. However, your health care provider needs very much to stay on top of this. Is the cause of your fissure known? On rare occasion, cancer can cause fissures. Your provider needs to check that, at the very least, you fissure was not caused by such a process.
