Tears in Heaven, How ALS touched GL's Beth Chamberlin personally Soap Opera Weekly , July 18, 2000. In her own words as told to Mark McGarry. In May of 1999, I was home in Vermont visiting, and my dad said, "I was just talking to Roy Vance, Curtis' father. Curtis watches the show all the time, and he would really like to meet you." I knew he was suffering from ALS; he had been diagnosed in August 1998. So I went up to see him, and I met Curtis and Heidi, who was his girlfriend at the time. I went there with great trepidation. I thought: This is going to be depressing. But, instead, Curtis and Heidi were the most uplifting people I could imagine meeting. Instead of feeling depressed, I left feeling how wonderful life was, and was inspired by these two and the way they were approaching his illness.
A month and a half later, Curtis' health was failing more, so I wanted to do something for them. I decided that I would do a benefit - a reading of Love Letters.

2005 Positive Spin for ALS Bike Tour
presented by the Holloway Family Foundation The Positive Spin for ALS Bike Tour presented by the Holloway Family Foundation was held June 4-5, 2005 and it was a HUGE success! In our second year, we had 66 cyclists (up from 23 last year) participate and do their part to help Strike Out ALS! Sponsors and cyclists rallied together to raise over $40,000 putting a positive spin on a disease that is certainly anything but positive. The funds raised will help the North Texas Chapter continue providing the many programs and services we have to offer on a local level as well as help support our National office in their research efforts. The Holloway Family Foundation returned this year as our presenting sponsor and we are very grateful for their financial support. Other financial sponsors include First Financial Bank, EOG Resources, TXI, City National Bank and Merrill Lynch. For a list of all of our sponsors

    Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
    Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition:
A disease of the motor nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing progressive loss of motor control.
Alternative Names: Lou Gehrig's disease; ALS
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is caused by progressive loss of motor nerves in the spinal cord and brain. In about 10% of cases, ALS is caused by a genetic defect. In other cases, the cause of the nerve deterioration is unknown. ALS affects approximately 1 out of 100,000 people. Except for having a family member affected with the hereditary form of the disease, there are no known risk factors.

According to this in Europe the disease sometimes is called Morbus Charcot. In America it often is called Lou Gehrig´s disease, named after an American baseball player, who fell ill with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis in the thirties. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – occurrence and frequency Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is one of the most common progressive disorders of the motor system. Annualy 0.6 to 2.4 per 100,000 population become ill with this disease. In the northern regions of Europe Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis seems to appear a bit more frequently. In fact 3 to 8 persons of 100,000 inhabitants suffer from this disease. In Germany about 6000 people are affected. The frequency increases with age. The median onset is between 50 to 70 years of age. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – symptoms Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive degenerative disease of the motor system. It affects two different groups of nerve cells: upper and lower motor neurons. The task of these neurons is voluntary movement. Upper motor neurons are located in the brain. Their fibres (axons) connect the brain with brain stem and spinal cord, where the impulses are transmitted to the lower motor neurons. The axons of the lower motor neurons lead to muscle fibres, which are innervated (stimulated) by them.

    Motor neurone disease
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Motor neurone disease
    Motor neurone disease MND
) is a term used to cover a number of illnesses of the motor neurone amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive muscular atrophy (PMA), progressive bulbar palsy (PBP), and primary lateral sclerosis (PLS). MND is the term used internationally while ALS is often used in the United States (where it is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease , after a famous patient) to cover all forms of MND. It was first described by Jean-Martin Charcot , a French neurologist, in and in France the disease is therefore known as Maladie de Charcot (Charcot's disease).

    Signs and symptoms
The onset of symptoms is usually between 40-70 years of age (average 55). Cases range from 18 to over 100. The disorder is characterized by the progressive loss of voluntary muscle contraction due to the destruction of nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord that are responsible for the stimulation of the voluntary muscles . While the initial symptoms are subtle, the disease causes progressive physical disability.

Donate Now The Curtis R. Vance Foundation is a nonprofit corporation, whose purposes include but are not limited to public education and funding of research for a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, and providing assistance to the victims of the disease and their families. The Curtis R. Vance Foundation was created by Curtis Vance and his wife and caregiver, Heidi, in the winter of 1999. Diagnosed with familial ALS in December, 1998 at the age of 25, Curtis died in December 1999 as a result of respiratory failure. Throughout the time that Curtis lived with ALS, he remained positive that a cure would be found in his lifetime, and simultaneously lived each day as though it could be his last. He learned how to live while he prepared to die. His humor, love, and generosity flowed out of him and into every person who met him, both before and during his illness. Six months after the diagnosis, he questioned Heidi with a smile and a tear, "Why can’t you find the cure?" And, during one of his last days, he declared to her, "I pray that no one else in my family, or in the world, will ever feel the way I do now." Although mentally strong and emotionally healthy, Curtis was physically exhausted. He could no longer move his legs and arms, breathe on his own, or eat and drink without the aid of a feeding tube. His voice was soft and slurred, and since his facial muscles had recently deteriorated, a smile was almost an impossible task. But, one could still sense his spirit in his eyes, and it is his spirit that has pushed 25-year-old Heidi forward since the day Curtis left his riddled body. When her days of physically caring for Curtis came to a halt, she began dedicating the hours to their foundation, and hopes that someday she can fulfill her husband’s dreams.
