Factoid:
With the percentage of older people increasing throughout the developed world, it is estimated that, barring effective treatment, the number of Alzheimer's victims in the U.S. alone will reach 14 million by the year 2050. Discovery Could Lead to Treatment for Alzheimers Researchers have identified an enzyme that contributes to, or perhaps causes, the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. Blocking that enzyme in the brain may lead to an effective treatment. Start Date: 4/10/99 A report in the journal Nature on April 8, 1999 says researchers have identified an enzyme that contributes to, or perhaps causes, the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, the progressive mind-destroying illness that afflicts some 4 million Americans and many millions more worldwide. The enzyme, called presenilin, is believed to control production of amyloid beta proteins in the brain. These proteins form plaques, or toxic deposits, in the brains of Alzheimer's victims. Presenilin was previously believed to have a role in Alzheimer's, but the new research appears to clarify that role and suggests a path toward control or prevention of the dread disease. Dr. Dennis J. Selkoe, a neurologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, said scientists are "very much on the road" to a treatment. He said drugs designed to block the enzyme could enter clinical trials within three years.

      Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Information
Alzheimer's disease (pronounced Alz'-hi-merz) is a progressive, degenerative disease that attacks the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behavior. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. Dementia is a loss of intellectual functions (such as thinking, remembering and reasoning) so severe that it interferes with an individual's daily functioning and eventually results in death. Alzheimer's is the fourth leading cause of death in adults, after heart disease, cancer and stroke. Men and women are affected almost equally. The disease was first described by Dr. Alois Alzheimer in 1906. Since then, researchers have developed a deeper understanding of the changes in the brain (plaques and tangles) and behavioral changes that characterize the disease. Identified risk factors are age and family history. Most people diagnosed with Alzheimer's are older than age 65; however, Alzheimer's disease can occur in people in their 40s and 50s. Symptoms Symptoms of AD can include gradual memory loss, decline in the ability to perform routine tasks, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills, impairment of judgment and planning and personality changes. The rate of progression varies from person to person. The time from the onset of symptoms until death averages at 8 years, but can range from 3 to 20 years. Eventually persons with AD become totally incapable of caring for themselves.

Alzheimer's Disease Cost Diagnosis Life Expectancy Local Statistics ... Symptoms Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain's nerve cells, or neurons, resulting in loss of memory, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes.   These neurons, which produce the brain chemical, or neurotransmitter, acetylcholine, break connections with other nerve cells and ultimately die. For example, short-term memory fails when Alzheimer's disease first destroys nerve cells in the hippocampus, and language skills and judgment decline when neurons die in the cerebral cortex.   Two types of abnormal lesions clog the brains of Alzheimer's sufferers: Beta-amyloid plaques-sticky clumps of protein fragments and cellular material that form outside and around neurons; and neurofibrillary tangles-insoluble twisted fibers composed largely of the protein, tau, that build up inside nerve cells. Although these structures are hallmarks of the disease, scientists are unclear whether they cause it or a byproduct of it.   Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging.

I read every web page, every book and every article written on dementia or Alzheimers. I became a walking reference book on this terrible disease. Friends learned to avoid mentioning my mother or Alzheimer's as I would launch into an eye glazing monologue of statistics, but after all the facts were read and digested, I was left with the undeniable facts. My mother had a progressive, degenerative disease that would rob her of her memory and dignity and would ultimately lead to her death. There was no cure. There was no hope. That was 8 years ago.
