Alzheimer's disease - the dementia. Recently there have been some important breaks through to possible treatments of Alzheimer's-type dementia. Alzheimer's disease remains the greatest scourge of the elderly after heart disease and stroke. Despite the possibilities of effective treatments for Alzheimer's disease in the forseeable future, this glimmer of hope comes too late for millions of people throughout the world. For them, their prime need is and will remain their quality of care. Nursing Homes are over-burdened with dementia sufferers, particularly those with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimers disease is now known to be a group of dementias and not just one single disorder Some nursing homes are still not properly equipped or trained to deal with the special needs of people with Alzheimer's disease. There is still too much ignorance of what Alzheimer's disease IS, and ignorance breeds fear and prejudice.

Alzheimers disease:
Tips for Alzheimer’s caregivers Mary Clark, Ph.D. http://mediwriter.com The devastation of Alzheimer’s Disease (Alzheimer's disease) affects millions of families in the United States. Alzheimer’s Disease costs can be measured in mental, physical, emotional, and financial terms. Perhaps the greatest toll is exacted on the primary caregiver, who tends to a loved one requiring progressively more attention and eventually total care. However, when caring for an Alzheimer's disease patient at home, there are some things that you can do to make the patient’s life safer and more enjoyable while helping to preserve your own mental, emotional, and physical health. For example, bathing and dressing a person with Alzheimer's disease beyond the early disease stages can be stressful, especially if he or she has become combative or otherwise uncooperative. However a little planning can help a lot. Try to make sure that all bathing materials (soap, shampoo, washcloth, towels) are within easy reach, so that you will not need to leave the patient unattended even momentarily. Safety issues also become more important. To lessen the chance of the patient slipping or falling, try placing a rubber mat or decals on the floor of the bath tub. Grab bars and shower seats may also be helpful. They can be purchased at most any medical supply store. You may want to lower the temperature of the hot water in your heater to reduce the chance of scalding. Keep all medications and toxic substances in a locked cabinet. Patients with advanced Alzheimer's disease often cannot distinguish edible from inedible items.

Facts, Disease Prevention and Treatment Strategies
Alzheimer's Facts and Statistics
We've all had times when we can't remember where we put our keys or when an appointment was supposed to be. These occasional memory lapses are a normal part of being human. So when should you worry about signs of Alzheimer's Disease? A simple example is: If you forgot where you put your glasses there is no great cause for concern ... but if you've forgotten you wear glasses you have significant reason to worry about your memory problem. A more extensive list of Alzheimer's Symptoms is as follows: a chronic, progressively worsening problem accompanied by disorientation, problems with judgement, concentration, language and mathematical skills, physical coordination, and sleeplessness, the repetition of the same ideas or movements, the tendency to wander off and get lost, "sunsetting" or restlessness and wandering off in the late afternoon and night, dramatic personality changes, and eventually the loss of the ability to perform basic self-care functions. Alzheimer's disease is a type of dementia that already affects millions of Americans and that is expected to affect millions more as the number of people over 50 continues to increase.

Vegetarian Diet Increases Alzheimers Risk
Elderly people with low blood levels of vitamin B-12 and folate may face an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Vitamin B-12 plays an important role in maintaining nerve cells, and some research has linked low blood levels of the vitamin to Alzheimer's and mental decline. Few studies have looked at whether there is such a connection between Alzheimer's and folate, a B vitamin key to the production and maintenance of body cells.
In a study of 370 men and women aged 75 and older, investigators found that

Telling stories isn't easier than reading books, storytelling is a completely different art. Storytelling is a responsive art form. Aside from being a wonderful way of sharing time with a child and teaching the value of imagination, storytelling can become a challenging creative outlet for you. It's your chance to peek into a child's own unique imagination. If you're lucky, you may get to hear a few stories as well as tell them. Storytelling is portable, cheap and fun. A trip to the store could turn into a recipe for adventure. The mailbox becomes a gateway to another world. Storytelling is a way to teach children to re-envision the world, to look at it and see not just what it holds, but what else it could hold. Storytelling is a way to convey imagination more than information.

Alzheimers Disease affects an estimated four million American adults, 100,000 of them in Wisconsin. Alzheimers Disease is not a normal part of aging. It is a progressive, degenerative, and fatal disease that attacks brain cells impairing memory, thinking, and behavior. While there are drug therapies for the treatment of Alzheimers Disease, there is no known cause or cure. Current research is looking at genetics and other factors associated with this disease to point the way toward early detection, treatment, and hopefully prevention. The Alzheimers Association of Southeastern Wisconsin works to not only keep you informed about the latest developments in battling this disease, but ways to cope as well.
Some common warning signs of Alzheimers Disease include:
  • loss of recent memories
  • difficulty performing familiar tasks
  • rapid changes in mood or behavior
  • lost of initiative
  • disorientation of time and place
  • problems with abstract thinking

A Series of Three Programs
Alzheimers Care Series
By Margo Meisel
for the Assisted Living Federation of America
This important three-part video series addresses common but often misunderstood behaviors of patients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. These behaviors may appear irrational, and are sometimes violent, but by employing the effective methods of interaction and intervention presented in this series, caregivers can redirect and defuse these behaviors while keeping patients' dignity intact. A variety of caregivers share their experiences and thoughts on providing for residents with Alzheimer's, while providing vivid examples of the techniques and concepts that have worked in their facilities. Study Guides are included with each program. In Wandering: Is It a Problem? experienced caregivers demonstrate compassionate techniques for intervening with patients who wander. Through viewing actual provider-patient interactions, students and staff will learn effective methods of re-directing the wanderer, providing a safe and secure space for residents, and avoiding escalation to an agitated state.
