It damages the brain cells responsible for intellectual functioning in the brain, including memory , intelligence, judgment, and speech. Alzheimers leads to the loss of mental and physical functions. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia in older people. It affects the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. A small percentage Alzheimer's patients are under 50 years of age. However, most are over 65 years of age. A rare and aggressive form of Alzheimer's can happen in some people in their 40s and 50s. Over the course of years, as the disease progresses, individuals loose their ability to perform the basic tasks that are part of everyday life and usually end up requiring constant care and supervision. Symptoms The first noticeable symptoms of Alzheimer's are: loss of memory, trouble performing tasks, poor judgement, misplacing things, inability to think and understand and gradual changes in behaviour.

More than 4 million people in the U.S. are afflicted with dementia, with Alzheimer's Disease being the most com mon form. Deciding when to limit or stop driving can be a confusing issue for individuals diagnosed with dementia and their caregivers. Earlier diagnosis and better medications may allow people to drive longer, further complicating the decision. Most information about dementia warns against driving, but does not describe when or how to stop. The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., the MIT Age Lab and Connecticut Community Care, Inc., have developed a guide to Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia and Driving as a tool to help individuals and caregivers determine when it is time to stop driving. What is the Gay and Lesbian Carers Network? Lesbian women and gay men caring for a partner, relative or friend with dementia face many challenges - not only those discussed on other pages of this site, but possibly many more. For example, they may have to 'come out' to many professionals - doctors, social workers, nursing home staff - who have become involved in what may previously have been a very private relationship. Professionals do not always understand gay and lesbian lifestyles and some may even be judgmental when faced with scenes of affection! Caring for a person with dementia can cause feelings of isolation. This can be exacerbated by people not understanding different lifestyles. Society needs to recognise the needs of older gay men and lesbian women and those caring for a relative, partner or friend with any type of dementia, including Aids-related dementia. The Society is trying to do this by through its Gay and Lesbian Carers Network, a telephone helpline service staffed by gay men and lesbian women. These trained and skilled volunteers are able to offer a listening ear.

Chemists and biologists at Northwestern University have found a way to detect and estimate the size and structure of a miniscule toxic protein suspected of triggering Alzheimer’s disease. Family size, environment may increase Alzheimer's risk, study says
January 24, 2000 Web posted at: 5:33 p.m. EST (2233 GMT) From Medical Correspondent Rhonda Rowland (CNN) New research suggests family size and where a person is raised may be linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. According to a study in the journal Neurology, a patient's childhood environment may set the stage for the degenerative brain disorder. "Children from very large families are at higher risk, but also, children from very large families are more likely to be from the lower socioeconomic levels," said researcher Victoria Moceri of the University of Washington.
