Department of Neurology Home Faculty Contact RESEARCH TRAINING IN INHERITED NEUROLOGICAL DISEASES (NIH T32 NS07493-01A1)
The goal of the program is to train physician-scientists, and consideration will be given to qualified individuals who have completed a residency in either adult or pediatric neurology. Physician trainees entering the program must be willing to pursue full-time research training for a minimum of two years.
During the first year, trainees will be enrolled in the Clinical Research Curriculum developed and led by Dr. James Kushner of the General Clinical Research Center. This curriculum, funded by a K30 grant from the NCRR, is directed specifically toward providing clinical researchers with the necessary and appropriate background necessary for successful clinical research. They will also begin a mentored clinical research project, which they will pursue for their entire second year. Current faculty members are listed alphabetically below: John Atkins, Ph.D., Research Professor of Human Genetics.
Dr. Atkins studies mechanisms of RNA translation and recoding events at the ribosome. Current projects related to this grant include studies of the sequence context effects on aminoglycoside-induced readthrough of premature stop codon mutations in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Roger E. Walker Jr. to head DOC June 1 Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich on May 1 named Macon County Sheriff Roger E. Walker Jr., the first elected African-American sheriff in Illinois, to be director of the Illinois Department of Corrections. "Sheriff Walker is an outstanding law enforcement professional," Blagojevich said. "He brings a lifetime of experience that spans from his start as a patrol officer to his current position as sheriff of Macon County. His priorities are the same as mine - to operate and maintain the best, the safest and the most efficient correctional system in the country. I'm very pleased the sheriff has agreed to join my administration." Walker, 54, who will assume his new post June 1, will lead an agency with more than 13,500 employees and a budget of $1.3 billion. A sports enthusiast, Walker likes to use a baseball analogy to describe his managerial style running the sheriff's department.

Prognosis of Alternating Hemiplegia
About prognosis: The 'prognosis' of Alternating Hemiplegia usually refers to the likely outcome of Alternating Hemiplegia. The prognosis of Alternating Hemiplegia may include the duration of Alternating Hemiplegia, chances of complications of Alternating Hemiplegia, probable outcomes, prospects for recovery, recovery period for Alternating Hemiplegia, survival rates, death rates, and other outcome possibilities in the overall prognosis of Alternating Hemiplegia. Naturally, such forecast issues are by their nature unpredictable. Prognosis for Alternating Hemiplegia: Children with the benign form of alternating hemiplegia have a good prognosis. However, those who experience the more severe form have a poor prognosis because intellectual and mental capacity do not respond to drug therapy, and balance and gait problems continue. Over time, walking unassisted becomes difficult or impossible

Genealogical studies in a large number of affected French Canadian individuals suggest that ACCPN results from a single founder mutation. A genomewide search using 120 microsatellite DNA markers in 14 French Canadian families allowed the mapping of the ACCPN gene to a 5-cM region on chromosome 15q13-q15 that is flanked by markers D15S1040 and D15S118. A maximum two-point LOD score of 11.1 was obtained with the marker D15S971 at a recombination fraction of 0. Haplotype analysis and linkage disequilibrium support a founder effect. These findings are the first step in the identification of the gene responsible for ACCPN, which may shed some light on the numerous conditions associated with the progressive peripheral neuropathy or agenesis of the corpus callosum.

yes no Alternating hemiplegia is a condition which has transient weakness of either, or sometimes both, sides of the body. The attacks may alternate or sometimes overlap, that is the second side is affected before the first recovers. Attacks start in the first year of life and are often accompanied by unusual irregular eye movements. The attacks last from less than an hour which is unusual to sometimes several days. When the attacks are prolonged the manifestations are not apparent during sleep or for the first 15-20 minutes on waking when they then return. This is a very characteristic finding and when there are bilateral attacks this may allow feeding and drinking to occur in that short clear period after waking. The episodes of hemiplegia are not epileptic in nature but epileptic seizures may co-exist and require separate anti-epileptic drug treatment. The cause is not known. Affected children usually have significant learning disabilities and motor organisational problems, including unsteadiness. There is a tendency for these problems to increase with repeated episodes.

Lapsuusiän vuorotteleva hemiplegia
AHC Lapsuusiän vuorotteleva hemiplegia on harvinainen epsisodimaisen hemiplegian muoto. Oireiston kuvasi ensimmäisenä Mikati, M. A. kumppaneineen v. 1992. Siitä oli raportoitu vuoteen 2004 mennessä noin 250 kertaa. Lisätietoja:
