related terms: colour mutant alopecia, blue or fawn Doberman syndrome, fawn Irish setter syndrome, blue dog disease What is colour dilution alopecia? This condition develops in some, but not all dogs that have been bred for unusual coat colour, especially "fawn" (a dilution of a normally red or brown coat) or "blue" ( a dilution of the normal black and tan coat colour). Alopecia means hairlessness - affected dogs have a poor, patchy haircoat progressing to widespread permanent hair loss. At the cellular level, there are abnormalities of the hair follicles and uneven clumping of pigment (melanin) granules in the hair shafts in affected areas How is colour dilution alopecia inherited? The inheritance is unclear. The condition is thought to be due to the interaction of different factors at the gene position for colour. It is not simply determined by the genes at that locus, because not all dogs with colour dilution develop coat problems. What breeds are affected by colour dilution alopecia This condition is seen most commonly in Doberman pinschers with unusual coat colours (as many as 90% of blue Dobermans and 75% of fawns). The condition also occurs but is less common in other breeds bred for unusual coat colours: Bernese mountain dog, chihuahua (blue), chow chow (blue), dachshund (blue), Great Dane (blue), Irish setter (fawn), miniature pinscher (blue), saluki, schipperke (blue), Shetland sheepdog (blue), standard poodle (blue), whippet (blue), Yorkshire terrier (grey-blue).

(Hair Loss)

Definition
Alopecia refers to hair loss in areas of skin that normally have hair. There are two forms of alopecia: Scarring “ loss of hair follicles. This causes permanent hair loss. Cutaneous lupus erythematous and fungal kerions are the most prevalent forms of scarring alopecia. Nonscarring “ the hair shaft is gone but the follicles are still present. Because the hair follicles still exist, it often is reversible. It can, however, develop into the scarring type. Alopecia areata is a type of non-scarring alopecia. It is an auto-immune process and the cause is not known. Hair loss lasts approximately six months. Hair Loss www.nucleusinc.com

HEREDITARY ALOPECIA: CONGENITAL ABSENCE OF HAIR IN HUMANS
Loss of hair can occur late in life or it can be congenital. Of the hundreds of Mendelian conditions known to cause hair loss in humans, we have developmental genetic information on only three of them. One is a mutation in a structural gene that encodes for a type II keratin . This creates a condition known as monilethrix brittle hair. The second is a developmental condition, anhydrotic ectodermal dysplasia , a syndrome characterized by the loss of hair, teeth, and eccrine sweat glands. Anhydrotic ectodermal dysplasia is caused by mutations in the X-linked gene for the ectodysplasin-A protein. The third condition, alopecia universalis , the complete lack of body hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows, is caused by mutations in the hairless gene.
Anhydrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia.
Anhydrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia (AED) was known for decades to be an X-chromosome-linked condition that was predominantly manifest in males. Indeed, Charles Darwin wrote of this condition in 1875, when he noted a family in Scinde, in which ten men, in the course of four generations, were furnished, in both jaws taken together, with only four small and weak incisor teeth and with eight posterior molars. The men thus affected have very little hair on their body and become bald early in life. They also suffer much during hot weather from excessive dryness of the skin. It is remarkable that no instance has occurred of a daughter being affected...Though the daughters in the above family are never affected, they transmit the tendency to their sons; and no case has occurred of a son transmitting it to his sons.
