Supporting Research Alopecia is the absence or slowing of hair growth in an area of the body where hair formerly grew. It may be caused by physical damage to the hair itself or to the hair follicles, but it is most often the result of changes in the natural growth cycle of hair. In some types of alopecia, the growth cycle is disrupted by some temporary situation such as a chemical imbalance or stress. However, the vast majority (95 percent) of cases of hair loss in both men (male pattern baldness) and women (female diffuse baldness) are genetic in origin. This is called androgenetic alopecia. Signs and Symptoms
  • Male pattern baldness. Thinning or absence of hair at the hairline and top of the head. Female diffuse baldness. A gradual thinning of hair, especially on the top of the head. Hairline generally remains intact.

DESCRIPTION: Absence of the hair from skin areas where it normally is present
  • Telogen effluvium - diffuse hair loss that results in decreased hair density but does not progress to complete baldness
  • Anagen effluvium - diffuse shedding of hairs, including growing hairs, that may progress to complete baldness
  • Cicatricial alopecia - also known as scarring alopecia and characterized by slick, smooth scalp without any evidence of follicular openings of hair
  • Androgenic alopecia - hair loss occurring in either sex, caused by stimulation of the hair roots by male hormones
  • Alopecia areata - patchy, non-scarring hair loss
  • Traction alopecia - patchy, initially non-scarring hair loss
  • Tinea capitis - patches of hair broken off close to the scalp, with or without associated inflammation, caused by fungus infection

System(s) affected: Skin/Exocrine
Genetics: In Caucasians, androgenic alopecia follows a dominant trait with incomplete penetrance. The hereditary incidence is notable not only in men but also in women with a strong family history of baldness.
Incidence/Prevalence in USA: 50% of Caucasian males by 50 years of age have noticeable male-pattern baldness. 37% of postmenopausal females show some evidence of hair loss.

Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata is one type of hair loss that typically causes patches of baldness. In some cases the hair regrows. In some cases, patchy baldness, or even total baldness, can persist. Treatments to promote hair growth are not usually very effective.
What is alopecia areata and who gets it? Alopecia means loss of hair or baldness. There are several different causes and patterns of hair loss. Alopecia areata is one type of hair loss which affects about 1 in 100 people. It usually develops in teenagers and young adults, but can occur at any age. Men and women are equally affected. What are the symptoms of alopecia areata? The typical pattern is for one or more bald patches to appear on the scalp. These tend to be round and about the size of a large coin. They develop quite quickly. A relative, friend, or hairdresser may be the first person to notice the bald patch(es). Apart from the hair loss, the scalp looks otherwise healthy. There is no redness, itching, scaling, scarring, or other symptoms. When a bald patch of alopecia areata first develops, it is impossible to predict how it will progress. The following are the main ways it may progress.
  • Quite often the bald patch or patches re-grow hair within a few months. In some of these cases one or more bald patches may recur sometime in the future.

Alopecia
Hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia found in about half of men by 50 years of age. Less common in women. Normal hair cycle Each follicle produces a number of hairs during a lifetime. There are 3 phases:
  • Anagen growth phase – on scalp lasts 3-5 years when hair grows at approx 1cm/month. Duration of anagen phase is different from person to person and determines how long someone’s hair will grow if not cut.
  • Catagen phase – follows anagen, involutional stage lasts 2 weeks.
  • Telogen – dormant phase lasts 3 months. Hair remains in follicle but not growing.
  • At end of telogen, follicle starts production of new anagen hair which displaces old one from follicle. In animals this is synchronised to produce moults but in humans is unsynchronised and 50-100 hairs drop out each day, mostly unnoticed. Different types of hair loss:
    • Alopecia areata – discrete areas of hair loss, circular, may be one or more. Can occur anywhere on the body. Complete loss of hair in a specified area is called

    Om ¥rsager og behandling.
    http://www.dsgnet.dk/Sites/artsym/HRTAB~1.asp
