Allergens
are substance that cause the immunity system to trigger and fight against it. In normal cases, and in the majority this happens when foreign bodies such as bacteria, enter our body. However, innocent and harmless bodies (proteins) such as pollen, peanuts, milk, penicillin etc. may not be recognised by out immune system and keep thinking of them being a harmful foreign body. On the other hand, wasps and other insects produce allergens as a self defence for themselves. Below are three lists consisting of :

Seeking allergy relief from over-the-counter drugs
From Medical Correspondent Holly Firfer April 21, 2000 Web posted at: 1:58 p.m. EDT (1758 GMT) (CNN) Nearly 30 million Americans spend $325 million each year on non-prescription medicated relief for allergies. But in a survey by the American Pharmaceutical Association nearly half of consumers said they don't always read the drug labels and only 40 percent talked to their pharmacist about these medications before taking them.

Can Allergies Cause Behavior Problems? You may have heard conflicting information on this subject. There are many, many parents who swear dietary changes helped their ADD child, and yet most doctors and researchers deny that food allergies or sensitivities can cause the behaviors associated with ADD, their conclusions supposedly based on studies. If allergies can cause ADD behaviors, then shouldn't the studies verify that? The answer is yes, if the studies were designed properly. But according to The Center For Science in the Public Interest report in 1999 that concludes ADHD CAN be caused by foods and food additives After reading books, studies, and talking with affected parents I am convinced that some people (not just kids!) are reacting to foods and food additives by exhibiting ADD behavior. Not all, but some. Which people are most likely to be reacting to a food?

"Hey, do you want some?" your friend asks as he offers you a mouthwatering homemade brownie. You're tempted by the delicious dessert, but then you see the crushed peanuts on top. Darn! You're allergic to peanuts. Maybe just one little bite? Nope. If you have a food allergy, even a very tiny bit of that food can make you sick. It's better to say no thanks to the brownie and have a nut-free dessert. Lots of kids have food allergies - 2 million in the United States alone. These foods cause the most food allergies: What Is a Food Allergy?
Food allergies occur when your immune system makes a mistake. Normally, your immune (say: ih- myoon ) system protects you from germs and disease. It does this by making antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses, and other tiny organisms that can make you sick. But if you have a food allergy, your immune system mistakenly treats something in a certain food as if it's really dangerous to you. The same sort of thing happens with any allergy, whether it's a medicine (like penicillin), pollen in the air (from flowers and trees), or a food, like peanuts. So the thing itself isn't harmful, but the way your body reacts to it is.

    131. Allergies To Your Pet
In some situations, allergies to your pet can be controlled. For less seriousallergies there are some possible solutions.

Allergies to Your Pet In some situations, allergies to your pet can be controlled. Be very careful with asthmatic children though, you might need to find your pet a new home rather than risk your child's health and life, depending of the severity of the allergy. For less serious allergies there are some possible solutions. First and foremost, is keeping your pet clean. You may be lucky enough to have the kind of dog that has a kinder coat for the allergic, such as a poodle. No matter what kind of pet, keeping him clean and groomed, and keeping your living quarters clean will help. It may be possible to live with an allergic pet by separating the pet from the allergic person, such as never allowing the pet into the allergic person's bedroom. Check into the vacuum cleaners with the special HEPA filters too, and use them often. There is also a special product you can use on your pets: From Noofies:
Allerpet-C for cats and Allerpet-D for dogs has helped many allergic friends keep their animals. It's available at pet stores (sometimes the smaller mom-n-pop places are better for this than national chains) and at some vet's offices. It's a liquid - you moisten a paper towel or washcloth with this liquid and wipe your pet down with it once a week. It neutralizes the allergens on the pet's skin and fur. It takes about 3 weeks for it to reach peak effectiveness. It's truly a miracle for some!
Ed. note: Their site says once a week and the bottle probably does too, but KLynn says: "I've seen several articles on this now that say the pet has to be washed/wiped down once a day for it to be effective. That is because the allergen on cats rebuilds to it's original level every 24 hours."

    Allergies
The symptoms are familiar to millions of Americans - runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes - but it's not from a cold or flu, it's allergies. Allergic diseases are among the most common causes of disability in the United States, affecting over 40 million Americans, as many as one in six, according to the National Allergy Bureau (NAB). When someone has an allergy, they're sensitive to substances that don't affect most people, for example, pollen, mold, medications, even certain foods. An allergic reaction is our immune system (Read about " The Immune System ") doing its job to protect us from foreign substances, but unfortunately it's a false alarm as most of these substances pose no real danger to us.
    Allergy Symptoms
An allergy is an abnormal reaction to a normally harmless substance. While these substances, called allergens, don't bother most people, an allergic person's body will overreact when exposed to them, releasing chemicals that cause the classic allergy symptoms. Here are the most common:
    • sneezing
    • runny nose
    • stuffy nose
    • watery eyes
    • coughing
    • itchy eyes, nose or throat
