ABC of allergies
Venom allergy
Pamela W Ewan Stings from bees and wasps, the most common stinging insects in Britain, can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis. Coroners' data suggest that an average of four deaths from bee or wasp stings occur each year in the United Kingdom, but this is almost certainly an underestimate because venom anaphylaxis is not always recognised as the cause of death.

Allergies: Things You Can Do to Control Your Symptoms
Printer-friendly version Email this article
What causes allergies?
You have an allergy when your body overreacts to things that don't cause problems for most people. These things are called allergens. Your body's overreaction to the allergens is what causes symptoms (see the box below for a list of symptoms). For example, sometimes the term "hay fever" is used to describe your body's allergic reaction to allergens in the air. Your doctor may want to do an allergy skin test to help determine exactly what is causing your allergy. An allergy skin test puts tiny amounts of allergens onto your skin to see which ones you react to. Once you know which allergens you are allergic to, you and your doctor can decide the best treatment. Your doctor may also decide to do a blood test, such as the radioallergosorbent test (called RAST) or the ELISA test. Return to top

Allergy Shots: Could They Help Your Allergies?
Printer-friendly version Email this article
What are allergy shots?
An allergy shot contains a very small amount of the substance that you are allergic to (called an allergen). Common allergens include mold and pollen from grasses, ragweed and trees. So, for example, if you are allergic to grass pollen, a small amount of grass pollen will be put into the shot. Return to top
How do allergy shots work?
Allergy shots help your body fight the allergen. When you get shots of the allergen, your body makes antibodies to the allergen. The next time you have contact with the allergen, these antibodies help block its effect. Because the antibodies block the way your body reacts to the allergen, your allergy symptoms become less severe. After many allergy shots, you might start to get relief from your allergy symptoms. This relief will last for a long time. Return to top

Antibodies Definition Return to top An allergy is an exaggerated immune response or reaction to substances that are generally not harmful. See also: Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Allergy is caused by an oversensitive immune system, which leads to a misdirected immune response. The immune system normally protects the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria and viruses. In contrast, an allergic reaction is when the immune system reacts to substances ( allergens ) that are generally harmless and in most people do not cause an immune response. In a person with allergies, the first exposure to the allergen triggers the immune system to recognize the substance. Any exposure after that will usually result in symptoms. When an allergen enters the body of a person with a sensitized immune system, histamine and other chemicals are released by certain cells. This causes

Dr. Sanjay Gupta: Dogs may protect kids from allergies
CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta Story Tools (CNN) In a study presented at the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology conference this week, researchers found that having a dog around during a baby's first year of life is associated with a reduction in allergies. CNN anchor Bill Hemmer talked with medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta about the findings. GUPTA: This is a story that hits close to home for a lot of people. About 40 million to 50 million people have allergies to something in this country, and about 43 million people own dogs. Well, it turns out the two are actually related in some way. There was a study done of 286 children, newborns actually, to find out whether or not exposure to a dog actually protects them against allergies later in life, and, in fact, that's exactly what the study found. Thirty-three percent had allergies later on without the dog as a newborn; that's compared to 19 percent who had allergies if they had a dog a pretty significant protective effect by having a dog. Now, researchers tried to figure out why this might be, and they deduced that perhaps when a newborn is exposed to a dog, it actually revs up some of the good parts of the immune system, those same sorts of cells that might actually help ward off allergies later in life.

By Gina White ; reviewed by Dr. Vance Thompson Similar to processes that occur with other types of allergic responses, the eye may overreact to a substance perceived as harmful even though it may not be. For example, dust that is harmless to most people can cause excessive production of tears and mucus in eyes of overly sensitive, allergic individuals. Eye allergies are often hereditary. Allergies can trigger other problems, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and asthma. Most of the more than 22 million Americans who suffer from allergies also have allergic conjunctivitis, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Allergy Symptoms and Signs
Common signs of allergies include: red, swollen, tearing or itchy eyes; runny nose; sneezing; coughing; difficulty breathing; itchy nose, mouth or throat; and headache from sinus congestion.
What Causes Eye Allergies?
Many allergens are in the air, where they come in contact with your eyes and nose. Airborne allergens include pollen, mold, dust and pet dander. Other causes of allergies, such as certain foods or bee stings, do not typically affect the eyes the way airborne allergens do. Adverse reactions to certain cosmetics or drugs such as antibiotic eyedrops also may cause eye allergies. Allergic conjunctivitis, or allergy eyes, is contagious.

And fortunately, most younger children will outgrow these food allergies by the time they are three years old. Symptoms of a food allergy can include wheezing and difficulty breathing, itchy skin rashes, including hives, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and swelling around his mouth and in his throat. These symptoms usually develop fairly quickly after your child ingests the food he is allergic to, often within minutes to hours. Nasal symptoms by themselves, such as congestion or a runny nose, are usually not caused by food allergies.

http://www.lung.ca/asthma/allergies/
1. What Is An Allergy?
An allergy is an abnormal reaction by your body to substances which you are sensitized to. These substances are called allergens, and an allergic person produces antibodies against these allergens. Each time the allergic person comes in contact with an allergen after that first contact, certain cells in the body release chemical substances called mediators. Mediators, like histamine and leukotrienes, can cause one or more of the following symptoms: redness, swelling, itching and increased mucous production. With an allergy to pollens, there may be itchy eyes and runny nose. With an allergy to cats, there may be itchy eyes and swelling in the lungs. The body's response to the allergen results in individual signs and symptoms - not necessarily the same result in all people. The tendency to be allergic is inherited; the actual allergy is not inherited.
