How Allergies Work

Table of Contents Introduction to How Allergies Work The Allergic Process Allergic Reactions Are You Allergic? Common Types of Allergy Lots More Information Photo courtesy National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) An immune cell undergoing an allergic reaction A properly functioning immune system is a well-trained and disciplined biological warfare unit for the body. The immune system is really quite amazing. It is able to identify and destroy many foreign invaders. The immune system can also identify cells that are infected internally with viruses, as well as many cells that are on their way to becoming tumors. It does all of this work so the body remains healthy. As amazing as the immune system is, it sometimes makes mistakes.

Your eyes itch, your nose is running, you're sneezing, and you're covered in hives. The enemy known as allergies has struck again - and all you want to do is curl up into a ball of misery. There has to be something you can do to feel better. After all, doctors seem to have a cure for everything, right? Not for allergies. There are, however, things that you can do to relieve allergy symptoms or avoid getting the symptoms, even though you can't actually get rid of the allergies themselves. What Are Allergies?
Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people. When you're allergic to something, your immune system mistakenly believes that this substance is harmful to your body. (Substances that cause allergic reactions, such as certain foods, dust, plant pollen, or medicines, are known as allergens .) In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system produces IgE antibodies to that allergen. Those antibodies then cause certain cells in the body to release chemicals into the bloodstream, one of which is histamine (pronounced: his -tuh-meen). The histamine then acts on a person's eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract and causes the symptoms of the allergic reaction. Future exposure to that same allergen will trigger this antibody response again. This means that every time you come into contact with that allergen, you'll have an allergic reaction.

Dust, cats, peanuts, cockroaches. An odd grouping, but one with a common thread: allergies - a major cause of illness in the United States. Up to 50 million Americans, including millions of children, have some type of allergy. In fact, allergies account for the loss of an estimated 2 million school days per year. What Are Allergies?
An allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to a substance that's harmless to most people. But in someone with an allergy, the body's immune system treats the substance (called an allergen ) as an invader and reacts inappropriately, resulting in symptoms that can be anywhere from annoying to possibly harmful to the person. In an attempt to protect the body, the immune system of the allergic person produces antibodies called immunoglobulin E (IgE). Those antibodies then cause mast cells (which are allergy cells in the body) to release chemicals, including histamine , into the bloodstream to defend against the allergen "invader." It's the release of these chemicals that causes allergic reactions, affecting a person's eyes, nose, throat, lungs, skin, or gastrointestinal tract as the body attempts to rid itself of the invading allergen. Future exposure to that same allergen (things like nuts or pollen that you can be allergic to) will trigger this allergic response again. This means every time that person eats that particular food or is exposed to that particular allergen, he or she will have an allergic reaction.

Indoor Allergens Overview
Most people with asthma or hay fever or other outdoor allergies think of their home as a haven where they can escape their allergies. Unfortunately, houses and apartment buildings harbor their own allergens (agents that cause allergy symptoms). The inside of your home actually traps allergens, making them impossible to avoid.
  • Although many allergens in your environment can trigger allergic symptoms, house dust is the main culprit in indoor allergies. What is house dust?
    • It varies depending on the type and age of your home, the temperature and humidity in the home, what you keep in the home (everything from food to clothes to furniture), and who lives in the home (human, pet animal, and plant).
Some dust is present in every home, regardless of how often or how thoroughly the house is cleaned.
House dust is an airborne mixture that might contain fine particles of soil and plant material from indoors or outdoors, particles of human and animal skin (dander) and hair, fabric fibers, mold spores, dust mites, fragments of insects that have died and their waste, food particles, and other debris.
Although many substances in dust can trigger allergic symptoms, the most important indoor allergens are dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches, and molds.

Allergies
Index to this page Immunologists, as well as the general public, use the term allergy in several different ways. I shall define it thus: An allergy is a harmful immune response elicited by an antigen that is not itself intrinsically harmful. Examples:
  • The windblown pollen released by orchard grass has no effect on me but produces a violent attack of hay fever (known to physicians as allergic rhinitis ) in my wife.
  • She, on the other hand, can safely handle the leaves of poison ivy while if I do so, I break out in a massive skin rash a day or two later.
Antigens that trigger allergies are often called allergens
Four different immune mechanisms can result in allergic responses.
1. Immediate Hypersensitivities.
These occur quickly after exposure to the allergen. They are usually mediated by antibodies of the IgE class. Examples: Go to discussion
2. Antibody-Mediated Cytotoxicity
Cell damage caused by antibodies directed against cell surface antigens. Hence a form of
