Home alcoholism [alcoholism treatment] drug abuse drugs of abuse gambling addiction Teen Alcoholism ... Methamphetamine Treatment The denial that fuels addiction: How do people who need alcoholism treatment end up being such liars? People who need alcoholism treatment, drug treatment, teen drug treatment, or gambling treatment tell incredible lies. Addicts lie when they have to, and they lie when they don't have to. They lie to get out of trouble, and the lies get them into more trouble. They lie to increase their pleasure and they lie to wallow in their self-pity. Alcoholism treatment is necessary to show the addicted person the truth about the extent of their alcohol or drug problem. Why do people need alcoholism treatment? The disease of alcoholism or addiction must lie, and it must continue to lie, or it cannot exist. Alcoholism cannot live in the light of the truth. You can't tell the truth to yourself and continue be an alcoholic or drug addict. With the truth, you would realize the problem, and get some help. All of the lies exist to protect the alcoholic or drug addict from a painful truth. The truth is, we are out of control, and if we keep up the addictive behavior, we are doomed. The truth causes us great anxiety so we defend ourselves from the truth. We distort the truth just enough to feel like nothing is wrong. The reason alcoholics need alcoholism treatment is they are lying to themselves and they don't know it. They couldn't tell you the truth if they wanted to, because they don't know what it is. This self-delusion grows gradually over many years. People who need alcoholism treatment think they are fine even when they are dying.

One must lose one's life in order to find it.
Anne Morrow Lindbergh We are often so busy trying to control the outcome of the happenings in our daily lives, so intent on projecting our tomorrows that we let life slip by. Life is today. This is all we have for surethe moments in our lives we cannot hold. Sometimes it feels as if those moments are beyond time and place, gifts from God to receive and give up at the same time. 68. ALCOHOLISM
People with a family history of alcoholism are also more likely to begin drinkingbefore The risk for alcoholism in sons of alcoholic fathers is 25%.
http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc56.html
Alcoholism December 2001 WHAT IS ALCOHOLISM? Alcoholism is a chronic, progressive, and often fatal disease. It is a primary disorder and not a symptom of other diseases or emotional problems. The chemistry of alcohol allows it to affect nearly every type of cell in the body, including those in the central nervous system. After prolonged exposure to alcohol, the brain adapts to the changes alcohol makes and becomes dependent on it. The severity of this disease is influenced by factors such as genetics, psychology, culture, and response to physical pain.
Signs of alcoholism or alcohol dependence include the following:
  • The only indication of early alcoholism may be the unpleasant physical responses to withdrawal that occur during even brief periods of abstinence.
  • Alcoholics have little or no control over the quantity they drink or the duration or frequency of their drinking.
  • They are preoccupied with drinking, deny their own addiction, and continue to drink even though they are aware of the dangers.
  • Over time, some people become tolerant to the effects of drinking and require more alcohol to become intoxicated, creating the illusion that they can "hold their liquor."

AMERICAN BAPTIST RESOLUTION ON
ALCOHOLISM AND OTHER CHEMICAL DEPENDENCIES
All are created in the image of God, and God has entrusted us to be stewards of the whole creation. As stewards of the Divine Image, we are called to be responsible in relationships of faith toward God and of love and justice toward humankind. As stewards of the natural world, we are called to manage the world for the well-being of the present and future human community. Stewardship includes responsible use of the gifts of body, mind and spirit, as well as the gifts of grapes, grain and chemicals.
The Bible asserts that our rebellion against God perverts our relationship to our neighbors and distorts our relationship to all creation. Dependency upon alcohol and other chemicals not only reflects a misuse of creation because of the harmful effects upon body, mind and spirit, but also thwarts the creative potential because of the harmful effects upon the human community.
The biblical vision of God's shalom (wholeness, health, well-being, harmony and peace) provides an image of what God intends for creation. In our brokenness, disharmony and ill-health we prevent shalom and participate in "the whole creation...groaning in travail until now" (Romans 8:22).
Dependency on alcohol and/or other chemicals is a primary, progressive and chronic disease which attacks body, mind and spirit. Drugs and alcohol are indeed potentially addicting. At least 10% of the adult population is dependent on alcohol or other drugs. One out of four families is suffering from the effects of alcoholism and other drug-related problems. This dependency is a leading cause of death in the United States and a major factor in accidental death and violent crimes.

On the Rocks: Cynthia's Alcoholism Information A shark attacks its prey very slowly. It allows them to have a false sense of security; Circling and circling around them coming closer and closer until when they least expect it >>WHAM! Alcoholism is like a great white shark. Deceiving it's victims into thinking they aren't in danger. It waits very patiently to attack swimming at the bottom of the murky glass. Each year, over 10 thousand individuals under the age of 24 are killed in alcohol related accidents, making it one of the leading causes of death for this age group! Most experts agree that there are about 20 million alcoholics in the United States. The costs imposed by these addicted Americans both emotionally and financially are incalculable. Alcoholism is a chronic primarily hereditary disease, that progresses from early physiological susceptibility, into addiction and loss of control! Contrary to popular belief, Alcoholism is based on physiological addiction and NOT psychological dependence. The alcoholic's enzymes, hormones, genes and brain chemistry work together to create their abnormal and unfortunate reaction to alcohol.

Next This is My Story Home Links Above is the Ship I served on from 1958 to 1960 I was born on August the 13th on a Friday, the proverbial second son of a second son. I started drinking when I was about seventeen. You might say I was an alcoholic, it was so bad that no one knew I was a drunk till the day I stopped drinking. I joined the Navy things got even worse; did you ever hear the old saying (like a drunken sailor)? That was me. I would drink while I drove from bar to bar; I was not really enjoying it. It came to a point that my friends and I would go from bar to bar to start a bar fight, I thank God that no one was killed or enjured seriously. At times on Sunday while others were seeking God I would be in a bar drinking tomato juice and beer for my breakfast. I had a vicious temper and was always looking for a fight. My mouth was like an open sewer with the language I spoke, you would call it fluent profanity. I thought I would live forever till one day my best friend died in a freak accident, then I knew that life was temporary and death was just a heart beat away: I asked myself if I died right now where would I spend eternity. I knew that there was a God out there somewhere and that He had something better for me. The Bible says
