FDA approves easier-to-swallow version of AIDS drug
WASHINGTON (AP) The government approved Tuesday a new easier-to-use version of a standard AIDS drug that may ease patient complaints that the medicine is too hard to swallow. The drug is ddI, often used in the multi-drug cocktails that AIDS patients take to fight the virus. Until now, patients have had to chew, or dissolve in water, two large, bitter-tasting ddI pills twice a day. Those pills also frequently were blamed for diarrhea and other gastrointestinal side effects.

Implantable Hearing Aids
Q:
In a previous column a writer asked you about a hearing aid losing its effectiveness because of sweaty ears and pressure buildup. I was surprised you didn't mention the new implantable hearing aids. They would seem to eliminate these problems, though I don't know how good they are yet. What do your experts say about implantable aids?
A: Implantable hearing aids are a new system that consists of a tiny magnet placed inside the middle ear and an external sound processor. In the implant procedure the eardrum is carefully lifted up, providing access to the middle ear. A micro-magnet is then placed on a segment of the tiny bones in the middle ear, and then the eardrum flap is closed. The entire procedure takes about 30 minutes and is performed under local anesthetic. Because it uses electromagnetic waves instead of air pressure to amplify volume, the new hearing system eliminates pressure buildup, feedback, distortion and squealing common with standard hearing aids.

Welcome to World Bank HIV/AIDS
Last Updated: July 20,2005 While HIV/AIDS is clearly a health problem, the world has come to realize it is also a development problem that threatens human welfare, socio-economic advances, productivity, social cohesion, and even national security. HIV/AIDS reaches into every corner of society, affecting parents, children and youth, teachers and health workers, rich and poor. The World Bankin partnership with others is working to roll back the spread of this global epidemic. As the largest long-term investor in prevention and mitigation of HIV/AIDS in developing countries, the World Bank Group is working with its partners to:
  • Prevent the further spread of HIV/AIDS among vulnerable groups and in the general population; Promote countries' health policies and multi-sectoral approaches (e.g. by working in education, social safety nets, transport and other vital areas); Expand basic care and treatment activities for those affected by HIV/AIDS and their families, as well as for children whose parents have died of AIDS and other vulnerable children.

Mandela honours AIDS child activist
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa Former South African President Nelson Mandela has paid tribute to a child AIDS activist for his struggle against the pandemic. Nkosi Johnson's foster mother, Gail Johnson, said the 12-year-old died peacefully in his sleep at home in a Johannesburg suburb in the early hours of Friday morning. "It's a great pity that this young man has departed. He was exemplary in showing how one should handle a disaster of this nature," Mandela told reporters at his home in the capital, Reuters reported. "He was very bold about it and he touched many hearts," added Mandela, who last year praised Johnson as an icon of the struggle against AIDS. During his short life, Nkosi became one of South Africa's youngest and most well-known AIDS activists, with his fight to be allowed to attend school with healthy children his own age drawing a spotlight to society's treatment of people with the disease. Nkosi petitioned the nation's parliament, prompting lawmakers to enact new legislation forbidding discrimination against people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
