Mbeki vows to step up AIDS fight
CAPE TOWN, South Africa South Africa's plan to intensify the fight against AIDS has been criticised by opposition and government politicians for not going far enough. There is particular concern that AIDS drugs will not be made available countrywide in state hospitals. President Thabo Mbeki's announced the plan on Friday in an upbeat state-of-the-nation address at the opening of parliament. Addressing the country's AIDS epidemic at length, Mbeki said efforts to counter the epidemic would remain focussed on education and prevention, caring for the sick and developing an AIDS vaccine. EXTRA INFORMATION AIDS: 20 years of an epidemic Timeline Treatments and vaccines Flash: How HIV infects cells He said: "We have initiated discussions with some (pharmaceutical companies) to examine new ways of making drugs more affordable and to strengthen our health infrastructure." He added: "Government, working in partnership with all sectors ... will intensify its comprehensive programme against AIDS, sexually transmitted disease, tuberculosis and other communicable diseases.

What we do
Introduction
Eustice, 19, is head of this household in Zambia. Her parents and elder sister died of AIDS. The young were once considered relatively safe from HIV/AIDS. Today, more than half of all new infections strike people under the age of 25. Girls are hit harder and younger than boys. Infant and child death rates have risen sharply, and 14 million children are now orphans because of the disease. The world’s two billion children and adolescents are at the center of the HIV/AIDS crisis. And yet they are the ones who offer the greatest hope for defeating the epidemic. UNICEF works closely with young people on preventing new infections. Young people are clear on what they need to make healthy and informed choices: knowledge and life skills, youth-friendly and gender-sensitive services and a protective familial, social and legal environment. UNICEF also works to prevent parent-to-child transmission of HIV and helps communities provide care, protection and support to children orphaned and made vulnerable by the disease.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) is a community and consumer based organization, founded in December 1995 to accelerate the ethical development and global delivery of vaccines against HIV/AIDS. We provide independent analysis, policy advocacy, public education and mobilization to enhance AIDS vaccine research and development.
AVAC Releases AIDS Vaccine Handbook, May 2005
May 18th marks HIV Vaccine Awareness Day, a call for the world to recognize the need for a vaccine to end the raging global AIDS epidemic. This day commemorates the challenge to the world to develop an AIDS vaccine as the "first great triumph" of the 21st century - a challenge made by former president Bill Clinton on May 18, 1997 - and recognizes and thanks the thousands of volunteers, health professionals and scientists who are conducting and participating in AIDS vaccine research.
The challenge remains, and the world needs an AIDS vaccine more than ever. The statistics are alarming: 40 million people today live with HIV around the world and more than 5 million new infections occur each year. To date, more than 20 million men, women and children have died from AIDS worldwide. We mark this day to bring together communities from all over the world to support the development of an AIDS vaccine as part of a comprehensive response to the epidemic.
