Genotypic testing

By Joel E. Gallant, M.D., M.P.H. (8-Jul-2005)
Q: Hi,
I've been HIV positive since 2001 (CD4-129, viral load-399,00). My doctor started me on combivir/sustiva, which has worked really well (CD4-607, no virus in blood). However, my viral load has now become detectable twice over the past year. (CD4-491, v. load-1,172 and 1,615). My doctor ordered a genotypic test, but it could not be done because of "insufficient virus". Do I just wait until the viral load increases to have the test repeated? Thank you. Read Answer . . .

The program looks at the cutting edge of AIDS research, and what scientists are learning about preserving the immune system and marshalling the body's natural defenses against HIV to keep infected people from progressing to AIDS. Here's what you'll find online:
  • Fighting Back (Hot Science)
As you try to fight off an infection in this interactive activity, you'll gain an appreciation for the complexity of the body's immune system. (Shockwave and non-Shockwave versions)

Featured Products Ultra-Soft Playground Balls This is the BEST playground ball for children. It is like a marriage between a foam and a rubber ball. Made of an inflatable foam, Ultra-Soft playground balls are thick and strong. They feature a ball valve, not a blow straw. Because of the inflated foam they are sting free, and easy to grip. Even a small child can "palm" a large ball. They are safer to use and easier to teach with because they don't sting like a standard playground ball. Set of 6 includes 1 each of the following: red, blue, green, yellow, purple and orange. Soft Touch Football Rainbow Set Soft Touch Footballs are made from a durable foamed vinyl and are inflated with a regular ball pump. They are very soft, have a great grip and perfect spiral. Junior size. Set includes one of each of the following: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. Nobbie Ball Rainbow Sets The Nobs on the Nobbie ball provide a tactile experience and make them easy to grip. Very soft and squeezable. Lightweight, so they travel more slowly through the air. Inflate as you would a playground ball. Rainbow Nobbie Ball sets: includes one each of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Tachikara Rainbow Football Set Nylon wound with a rubber cover. Intermediate size. Institutional quality ideal for playground use. Set of six colors.
