Agoraphobia
Definition
The word agoraphobia is derived from Greek words literally meaning "fear of the marketplace." The term is used to describe an irrational and often disabling fear of being out in public. Description
Agoraphobia is just one type of phobia, or irrational fear. People with phobias feel dread or panic when they face certain objects, situations, or activities. People with agoraphobia frequently also experience panic attacks, but panic attacks, or panic disorder , are not a requirement for a diagnosis of agoraphobia. The defining feature of agoraphobia is anxiety about being in places from which escape might be embarrasing or difficult, or in which help might be unavailable. The person suffering from agoraphobia usually avoids the anxiety-provoking situation and may become totally housebound.
Agoraphobia is the most common type of phobia, and it is estimated to affect between 5-12% of Americans within their lifetime. Agoraphobia is twice as common in women as in men and usually strikes between the ages of 15-35. The symptoms of the panic attacks which may accompany agoraphobia vary from person to person, and may include trembling, sweating, heart

Overcoming Agoraphobia
The true meaning of agoraphobia is fear of crowds, but for many people it is much more than that.
Effective agoraphobia treatment
Overcoming Agoraphobia retrains the brain to understand that these situations are actually safe, and that it does not need to generate anxiety responses. Although medication is often prescribed as agoraphobia treatment, detraumatisation and relaxation is what is required.
Hypnosis is so effective for doing this because it keeps the mind calm and relaxed while reviewing the difficult situations or experiences, so teaching the mind to respond differently.
As this happens, you will begin to feel differently about the prospect of situations that used to be frightening, until actually going back into them is a realistic prospect.

Using EFT for Agoraphobia
EFT usually provides impressive results with Agoraphobia. In most cases, the agoraphobic person can travel well beyond their current limits with no anxiety whatsoever. In many cases, this relief is permanent. For those who don't achieve rapid or permanent relief, EFT is still likely to resolve the problem. However, in these cases more sophisticated approaches are usually necessary. Sometimes we must apply EFT to several past events in the person's life before the problem is permanently resolved. This usually involves 1 to 3 brief sessions. A good example is given below regarding Marie and her experience with EFT and agoraphobia. For other examples of EFT with a variety of phobias see our fear section. Home Page free 79 page downloadable EFT Manual Order Page
From the EFT email support list Marie's agoraphobiaincluding a follow-up Hi Everyone, I received a phone call last night from an agoraphobic lady ("Marie") whom I had never met. I drove 20 miles to her VERY rural home this morning to see if I could help. Nice lady. She answered the door with her toddler grandson ("Johnny") at her side. Marie had agoraphobia for at least 25 years. She can go outside her home but rarely goes beyond 50 yards without feeling intense body heat, panic and other fear responses. She refers to it as "my illness."

People who don't suffer from agoraphobia find it almost impossible to imagine what goes through the mind of somebody suffering from this illness. Each person's individual experience during an attack may differ, but generally speaking, an attack is very real and can be quite terrifying. I developed agoraphobia in mid 1996, after an incident changed my life completely. Before this incident, I was able to live my life to the fullest, with no restrictions. Here is my story. For the past 10 years, I have been a secretary, and have worked in many high rise buildings. Then one morning in January 1996, I was in an elevator inside my building which malfunctioned. At the time I was working on the 25th floor of my building, but this was to be a morning which would alter the rest of my life. I got into the elevator from the ground floor and pressed the button to take me to the 25th floor. Everything seemed quite normal, until the elevator continued past the 25th floor without stopping until it got to the top floor. When it reached the top, it halted and the doors remained shut. At this time, I wasn't panicked too much, and simply pressed the button for the 25th floor again and picked up the emergency telephone to report that I was stuck in the elevator.

Agoraphobia
How Phobias Work The Cure Other Treatments Tools "Agoraphobia is related to fear of developing panic-like symptoms (e.g., dizziness or diarrhea)."
- Phillip W. Long, M.D. (Internet Mental Health) The word "agoraphobia" originally meant "fear of the open marketplace" and meant fear of open spaces. Now it's usually used as a term to describe the fear of going into unfamiliar territory. Agoraphobics have had panic attacks before and are afraid of having a panic attack away from home or away from someone they feel safe with. Agoraphobics might describe their symptoms as panic, panic attacks, anxiety, nervousness, fear, spells, rapid heartbeat, hyperventilation, fear of death, fear of going crazy or the fear of fear itself. Agoraphobics experience anxiety about being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult. They are afraid panic-like symptoms might occur. Agoraphobic fears could include being outside the home; being in a crowd; being on a bridge; and traveling. Agoraphobia usually causes people to avoid these situations or have someone accompany them - sometimes causing serious interruptions and inconveniences and often leading to feelings of low self-worth. Agoraphobics often have a lifestyle which is severely limited by their condition.

YAYYYY First baby step on the road to recovery!!!!
I hate hospitals. Michael was taken to the ER the other night. He had elevated med levels and has been in since Tuesday. I keep thinking what if something goes wrong with him, what am I gonna do? Had to walk up to the smoke shop today and ask one of the kids to walk with me. The smoke shop is across the street but I had to go all the way up to the corner so that I didn't have to cross in the middle of the street. I am kinda paranoid about that. I always ask myself what if a car comes racing into the sucide lane ad hits me. But I hate not being able to walk down the street alone. I can't wait for Michael to come home. It has been one busy week. I almost have had panic attacks but the Zoloft seems to be helping me with it. Still, I do have insomnia and find it hard to get to sleep without Michael here.

Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an intense fear about being in public places where you feel escape might be difficult. So you tend to avoid public places, and may not even venture out from home. It can greatly affect your life. Treatment can work well in many cases. Treatment options include behaviour therapy and medication, usually with an SSRI antidepressant.
What is agoraphobia? Many people think that agoraphobia means a fear of public places and open spaces. But this is just part of it. If you have agoraphobia you tend to have a number of fears of various places and situations. So, for example, you may have a fear of:
  • entering shops, crowds, and public places.
  • travelling in trains, buses, or planes.
  • being on a bridge.
  • being in a lift.
  • being in a cinema, restaurant, etc where there is no easy exit.
  • being anywhere far from your home.
But they all stem from one underlying fear. That is, a fear of being in a place where help will not be available, or where you feel it may be difficult to escape to a safe place (usually to your home). When you are in a feared place you become very anxious and distressed, and have an intense desire to get out. The anxiety usually causes physical symptoms such as: a fast heart rate, palpitations, shaking (tremor), sweating, dry mouth, feeling sick, chest pain, headaches, stomach pains, a 'knot in the stomach', fast breathing. You may even have a panic attack (see separate leaflet called '

Agoraphobia and panic attacks have a serious impact on people's lives. Severe anxiety and avoidance interfere with work, studies, family relationships and social life. Most people who suffer from agoraphobia feel safer at home, and so begin to stay in more and more. They can no longer go out to see friends, go shopping or go to work. They can become very lonely and isolated. The Northern Ireland Agoraphobia and Anxiety Society provides the following services.
  • Advice, information and support on anxiety, agoraphobia and panic attacks.
  • One-to-one counselling support is available by appointment. While there is no fixed fee for counselling, the organisation is charitable and voluntary donations within a person's means are welcomed.
  • Self-help groups are run throughout Northern Ireland where people who experience agoraphobia and anxieties can meet and discuss their problems in a friendly and supportive environment.
