Statistics about Adjustment Disorder
About statistics: This page presents a variety of statistics about Adjustment Disorder. The term 'prevalence' of Adjustment Disorder usually refers to the estimated population of people who are managing Adjustment Disorder at any given time. The term 'incidence' of Adjustment Disorder refers to the annual diagnosis rate, or the number of new cases of Adjustment Disorder diagnosed each year. Hence, these two statistics types can differ: a short-lived disease like flu can have high annual incidence but low prevalence, but a life-long disease like diabetes has a low annual incidence but high prevalence. For more information see about prevalence and incidence statistics Society statistics for Adjustment Disorder Hospitalization statistics for Adjustment Disorder: The following are statistics from various sources about hospitalizations and Adjustment Disorder:
  • 0.05% (6,290) of hospital consultant episodes were for reaction to severe stress and adjustment disorders in England 2002-03 (Hospital Episode Statistics, Department of Health, England, 2002-03)

This appeared in the May/June 2002 issue of Hearing Loss: The Journal of Self Help for Hard of Hearing People. What’s On Your Mind? By Michael A. Harvey
Our psychologist explains the diagnosis of Adjustment Disorder. Dear Dr. Harvey: I am a 49-year-old woman and have been hard of hearing all my life. A couple of months ago, I got laid off from my job where I had worked for over twenty years. It was particularly hard, since my company had been so good about accommodating my hearing loss. I was having a tough time of it, withdrew from everyone and began drinking more. When I had thoughts of crashing into a tree and ending it all, it scared me, so I saw a therapist. He diagnosed me as having an “Adjustment Disorder.” What exactly does that mean? Is this because I’m hard of hearing? Am I maladjusted? And, do hard of hearing people have that diagnosis more than people with normal hearing? BP Cleveland, Ohio Dear BP: Given the seemingly constant barrage of layoffs these days, it is easy to forget how emotionally devastating they can be. Bravo to you for going to psychotherapy! However, I’m concerned that you may be overburdened by the stigma and oversimplification of psychiatric labels. Your technical questions warrant technical answers. “Adjustment Disorder” is one of many diagnoses which are listed in a book published by the American Psychiatric Association titles

    What is an adjustment disorder?
An adjustment disorder is defined as an emotional or behavioral reaction to an identifiable stressful event or change in a person's life that is considered maladaptive or somehow not an expected healthy response to the event or change. The reaction must occur within three months of the identified stressful event or change happening. Adjustment disorder
Overview Symptoms Treatment Prevention Definition: A reaction to one or more identifiable stressors that occurs within 3 months of when the stressors started. The reaction is excessive compared to a normal reaction to the stressors, and/or results in impaired functioning.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: An adjustment disorder has its onset within 3 months of the identifiable stressor. Symptoms generally do not last longer than 6 months. An adjustment disorder is basically a fairly intense reaction to a life stressor, that is severe enough to disrupt their life but not severe enough to be a major depression or other mood disorder. The cause is a life stress, but there is no way to predict which people are likely to get an adjustment disorder given the same stressor. Adults usually develop adjustment disorders related to stressors such as marital discord, finances, work, or school. In adolescents, common stressors include school problems, parental rejection, sexual problems, or parents' marital problems. Other stressors may include death of a loved one, life changes such as retirement or menopause , or unexpected catastrophes. Situational factors that influence how well a person reacts to stress may include economic conditions, availability of social supports, and occupational and recreational opportunities. Intrapersonal susceptibility to stress may include such factors as social skills, intelligence, flexibility, and coping strategies. In children, parental divorce can be a significant stressor.

    What causes adjustment disorders?
Adjustment disorders are a reaction to stress. There is not a single direct cause between the stressful event and the reaction. Children and adolescents vary in their temperament, past experiences, vulnerability, and coping skills. Their developmental stage and the capacity of their support system to meet their specific needs related to the stress are factors that may contribute to their reaction to a particular stress. Stressors also vary in duration, intensity, and effect. No evidence is available to suggest a specific biological factor that causes adjustment disorders.
