Lipomatosis Dolorosa
Adiposis Dolorosa
Morbus Dercum
Dercum's Syndrome Described as a chronic, almost unknown disease, for the first time in 1888 by the American neurologist Francis X. Dercum. And get this, neither the cause of the disease nor the treatment is yet known. Most common symptoms:
Pain, definite or indefinite swellings or lipomas, weight gain of maybe 50%, fatigue, difficulty in walking. The disease occurs mainly among women and increases with age. In spite of the fact that the disease has been known and described for more than 100 years. http://www.algon.dk/dercum/dercumeng2.php paints a pretty bleak picture with little know about treatment and the disease eventually attacking internal organs. Some believe that Dercum's Syndrome is an umbrella term for a whole host of health problems with unknown cause/cure. My first awareness of this syndrome came from a woman in Alabama who related to symptoms I experienced for many years related in a page on my website.

3. Adiposis Dolorosa AKA Dercum's Disease
These are more extensive, and better edited diary entries of Nunnie, aka PamPole, on her road of discovery of Dercum s, and extend past the original posts
http://www.nunnie.com/dercums.html
I have an extremely rare incurable disease called: Adiposis Dolorosa. It is also known as "Dercum's Disease". So far I have only found about 20 people that have this disease. There is NO cure. There is NO treatment. There is only supportive medications which are mainly pain pills. When this all first started, back on September 23, 1997, it started out as pain in my hands and arms. There was a lot of weakness and my hands and arms were going to sleep. In addition there was a huge lump inside the crook of my elbow on my left arm. It was about the size of a walnut. To just touch it sent me into tears as it was so painful. They thought it was Carpal Tunel, but ruled that out. Then they said it was Over-Use. I hadn't been typing much since September when it hit, and yet I was not getting any better. I had been begging my doctor, Doctor Fillingame, since September to do a biopsy on the first lump and he never would. Then I started asking him to refer me to a specialist and he wouldn't do that either. Since September I developed tumors on both my arms. The one huge lump at the crook of my elbow on my left arm turned into more lumps up the inside of my arm. In addition I developed another huge lump in the crook of the elbow in my right arm. At that point I started getting tumors, multiple tumors daily. They would grow very rapidly. What would start out the size of a pin head would become the size of a peach pit by the end of the day. Each visit I begged and pleaded with my doctor to please do a biopsy or send me to a specialist and he wouldn't.

  • Long-term treatment with high doses of corticosteroids leads to the development of truncal obesity and focal fatty deposition. These deposits characteristically are located on the face, the nuchal and truncal areas, and episternally, as well as in the mediastinum and epicardium. We studied a patient with juxta-articular adiposis dolorosa who had L-tryptophan-associated eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome and was treated with high doses of prednisone. This is the first reported case of adiposis dolorosa occurring as a complication of corticosteroid treatment. Alterations of fat metabolism induced by corticosteroid excess may have played a role in the development of this unusual painful syndrome.
Adiposis dolorosa is an uncommon disorder of subcutaneous tissue that was first described by Dercum in 1892 at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pa. The understanding of this disease has not progressed very much in the past 98 years. It remains better understood as a clinical entity than as a physiologic or metabolic process.

It is well known that the amount and distribution of body fat varies with age, sex and race. By contrast, less attention has been paid to certain disorders characterized by abnormal localized forms of excess adipose tissue. Reading a few selected articles related to basic science concepts and general orientation to the subject of adipose tissue will be helpful. **Wells: Adipose tissue, a neglected subject. Hi, my name is Pam AKA "Nunnie". I'm 50. I live with my husband, Rick . We moved from Oregon to Montana about 5 years ago. Rick has a lot of hobbies and interests. His main interest is aircraft, especially military aircraft. Take a look at his "Favorite Military Aircraft" pages. He has photos, information, and specs on his 10 favorite military aircraft. His main hobby is photography. Be sure and check out his "Wildlife Photography" pages where you will find some fantastic photos that he has taken of wildlife on our many travels around Oregon and Washington. Among them you will see deer, elk, numerous kinds of birds, etc. Please be patient, with so many photos the pages are a little slow to load. I have many hobbies and interests. But, my main interest is animals. Since moving to Montana we have purchased several horses. We are now breeding and raising registered Paint Horses. I have put up a quick web page on my horses for the time being. I will do a better one later on. You can check it out if you would like. The herd name is "Regal Paints" We have 2 cats. At the present time I have not made a page for them. I will probably do that this winter when I have more time. They are nothing special. Just something that we love. :)

adiposis dolorosa of Dercum Dercum's disease is the formation of multiple fatty deposits in various sites. This is a rare disease that predominantly affects women over men in a ratio of 30:1. It is rare for this condition to affect women before the menopause. This condition may be familial but the majority of cases are sporadic. It is characterized by the formation of circumscribed painful adipose tissue deposits in the subcutaneous tissues of the extremities and other parts of the body. The most common site for the deposits is the knees. The size of lesions varies from 0.5 to 5 cm. Patients are often obese. The disease may be associated with emotional instability, fatigue, weakness and, very occasionally, dementia. Histological examination reveals no abnormalities of the adipose tissue. There is no fat necrosis as seen in panniculitis. Giant cell formations may be seen. There is no satisfactory treatment. It has been reported that intravenous lidocaine brought relief in two cases.
