Addisons Disease
Addison’s disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is caused by a lower than normal production of hormones, such as cortisol, by the adrenal glands. The adrenals are small glands that are located near the kidneys. Adrenal hormones are necessary to control salt, sugar and water balance in the body. Addison’s disease occurs less commonly than the opposite condition, Cushing’s disease (overproduction of cortisol) in dogs. Addison’s disease occurs most commonly in young to middle-aged female dogs. The average age is about 4 years old. The signs of Addison’s disease may be severe and appear suddenly, or may occur intermittently and vary in severity. Signs may include weakness, depression, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased thirst and increased urine production. One lesser known sign is hair growth, the dogs hair will actually grow in length and stay that way until medication is given. Typically most vets will miss this as they do not know what is normal for your dog. When a pet is stressed, their adrenal glands produce more cortisol, which helps them deal with the stress. Because dogs with Addison’s disease cannot make enough cortisol, they cannot deal with stress, so the signs may occur or worsen when stressed. What a dog finds stressful depends upon his/her temperament. For many dogs, any change in their day-to-day routine, such as being boarded or having house guests, is stressful and may precipitate or worsen signs of Addison’s disease.

Blood results from pets with this condition often show dehydration, an increase in kidney waste products (azotemia, uremia), metabolic acidosis (too acidic a body) elevated blood potassium (hyperkalemia in 95% of cases), low blood sodium (hyponatremia) and occasionally elevated blood calcium. Urine specific gravity is low in seventy-five percent of the cases.
Some dogs also need to receive bicarbonate of soda by injection or orally to nutrilize acid. Addison's disease is treatable but not curable. Some breeds develop this disease more commonly than others. We call this predisposition. These breeds include Portuguese Water Spaniels, Great Danes, West Highland White Terriers, Rottweilers, Standard Poodles, and Wheaten Terriers. Please do not breed dogs that have a tendency to this condition. Consult With Dr. Hines

Addisons disease (Hypoadrenocorticism)
Addison's disease is caused by an insufficiency of adrenal hormones from the adrenal gland, the adrenal glands are paired glands located near the kidney. Some of the clinical signs: Lethargy and depression, Vomiting, Weakness, Poor appetite, Weight loss, Dehydration, Diarrhoea, Hypothermia, Shaking/trembling, Polyuria (increased urination), Polydipsia (increased drinking), Slow heart rate, Collapse and shock (may occur in later stages of condition). The adrenal gland produces three types of hormones: Mineralcorticoids e.g. aldosterone
Which have an effect on the levels of the minerals; sodium, chloride and potassium in the body. Without mineralcorticoids, the potassium levels in the body can become so high that they interfere with normal heart function causing shock and rapid death. Glucocorticoids e.g. cortisol

Dear Brothers,
During a study period I came upon the term Addison's disease. I found the enclosed of interest and therefore felt obliged to share the short study. So often in human illness does the subject of blood pressure occur. Does not cosmic stress have immediate and deleterious effects on the persons who shun hierarchy? Addisons it is estimated effects about 1 in 400,000 and is probably the effect of repeated lives of a specialised form of cruelty. Yet how many millions are today effected with high pressure of the blood due to all manner of scorning of hierarchy in various ways, producing as many varied forms of related illnesses. With Addison's it seems there is a resulting low pressure of the blood. We are well aware of how the atmospheric pressure is regulated by systemic magnetism and how this is adjusted via the magnetic poles. Master Morya informs us of the magnetic poles of the human organism, which in turn effect necessarily the pressure of the blood system. This shows exquisitely, the peril to which humanity falls without the accumulation of psychic energy of hierarchy which balances the organism of the yogi and protects it from all forms of darkness and material attack while aiding us on the path towards the hierarchy of light.

Addison's disease
Addison's disease (Hypoadrenocorticism) Addison's disease is also known as hypoadrenocorticism. It is an insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Since these hormones are essential for life, this is an extremely serious disease and it must be treated as such. Adrenal insufficiency can be primary or secondary. Primary adrenocorticism affects salt/potassium balance in the body and glucorticoid as well. Secondary adrenocorticism usually only affects the glucocorticoids. It is not known why primary adrenocorticism occurs but it may be an immune mediated process. Secondary adrenocorticism probably occurs most often when prednisone or other cortisone being administered for medical reasons are suddenly withdrawn. It can occur as a result of pituitary cancer or some other process that interferes with production of hormones that stimulate the adrenal glands. Most dogs with Addison's disease initially have gastrointestinal disturbances like vomiting. Lethargy it also a common early sign. Poor appetite can occur as well. These are pretty vague signs and it is extremely easy to miss this disease. More severe signs occur when a dog with hypoadrenocorticism is stressed or when potassium levels get high enough to interfere with heart function. Dogs with this problem will sometimes suffer severe shock symptoms when stressed, which can lead to a rapid death. When potassium levels get high heart arrythmias occur or even heart stoppage which also is fatal. In some cases, especially secondary Addison's disease, there are no detectable electrolyte changes.

Have you ever wondered about the difference between healing and curing?
Patricia Reis says 'the bigger meaning of healing is "wholeing", a filling out of the missing pieces of a persons life. Sometimes this can even mean facing death in a more realized way'. This means that one can be healed completely and still go on to die of ones illness.
Curing usually consists of an external treatment which may indeed be part of healing, however the healing itself is more an internal approach and must always come from within. Healing addresses the imbalance in the emotions, physical body and mind that may underly the symptoms.
Healing can bring together the hidden and more mysterious aspects of a persons life. Many doctors have ben taught by their patients this invaluable lesson about living fully and the need for soul healing.
This week we feature:- Canine - Addisons Disease Addison's disease is known as Hypoadrenocortism, it is the opposite to Cushing's disease.

adrenocortical insufficiency usually as the result of idiopathic atrophy or destruction of both adrenal glands by tuberculosis, an autoimmune process, or other diseases; characterized by fatigue, decreased blood pressure, weight loss, increased melanin pigmentation of the skin and mucous membranes, anorexia, and nausea or vomiting; without appropriate replacement therapy, it can progress to acute adrenocortical insufficiency.
Radiographic Appearance
Radiology is not the primary diagnostic tool however patients may sometimes suffer from calicifications following tuberculous infections of the adrenal glands and these can be seen above the renal outlines on a plain abdominal radiograph.
The most common radiological and CT appearance of adrenal tuberculosis is calcification which can be diffuse, localized or punctate. CT demonstrates hypodense necrotic areas with peripheral ring enhancement on contrast administration
Pathology
Treatment
Often this requires the patient to enter hospital where intravenous fluids are given to replenish the body’s salt content which is depleted in Addison’s. Steroid are essential comprising two types. The first is called

Secondary adrenocortical insufficiency, due to lack of ACTH, does not constitute Addison's disease. Most cases of Addison's disease are idiopathic, and may represent autoimmune destruction of the adrenal cortex. Clearly defined causes of Addison's disease are extremely rare, and include tuberculosis (see tuberculosis adrenal amyloidosis , bilateral adrenal metastases, bilateral haemorrhage, histoplasmosis, sarcoidosis (see histoplasmosis adrenal and sarcoidosis genitourinary tract and haemochromatosis . Historically, tuberculosis was a frequent cause of Addison's disease, but this is now uncommon. There are few radiological findings. Plain radiographs may demonstrate adrenal calcification in cases due to tuberculosis , histoplasmosis or old haemorrhage. In idiopathic Addison's disease, the adrenals may be markedly atrophic and difficult to detect on CT or MRI. Occasionally, bilateral enlargement due to granulomatous disease or malignancy may be seen on CT or MRI.

Background
My name is Glenn Kardel. I have polyglandular autoimmune syndrome type II, frequently referred to as Schmidt's syndrome. The classic manifestations of this syndrome are adrenal insufficiency plus autoimmune thyroid disease and/or insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. I have all three of the above conditions: Addison's disease , hypothyroidism, and type I diabetes.
Addisons and hypothyroidism are treated with oral hormone replacement medications. Type I diabetes is the most serious and difficult to control of the three conditions. Treatment usually involves balancing insulin therapy administered through injections or a pump, diet, and exercise with the goal of maintaining normal blood sugar levels.
After I was diagnosed with Addisons and started taking hydrocortisone, I started to have highly variable blood sugars. I began to have sugars in the 300's and also frequent hypoglycemic episodes. I started searching for information about the interaction between Addisons and diabetes or any special treatment strategies related to the two conditions and was surprised to find almost nothing.
Given the adverse and potentially dangerous effect Addisons has on diabetes, this information should be explicitly stated and available to people with Addisons and diabetes. This website is my attempt to provide information on this subject and hopefully connect with others who have useful information about Addisons and diabetes.

    Overview
Addison's disease is a rare endocrine, or hormonal disorder that affects about 1 in 100,000 people. It occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss, muscle weakness, fatigue, low blood pressure, and sometimes darkening of the skin in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body. Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and in some cases, the hormone aldosterone. For this reason, the disease is sometimes called chronic adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism.

March 2005 23:11:49 HOME ADDISON'S INFORMATION What is Addison's disease? By: Sarah J. Baker Wednesday, 04. December 2002 Addison’s disease is a rare, chronic condition brought about by the failure of the adrenal glands. Lifelong, continuous treatment with steroid replacement therapy is required. With the right balance of daily medication, most people with the disease are able to continue life much as it was before their illness. Adrenal function The normal adrenal cortex has an enormous functional reserve. This is called upon by the body especially in times of intense stress, such as surgery, trauma or serious infection. One of the most significant consequences of Addison’s disease is, therefore, the body’s failure to adapt to such stresses and, in the absence of adequate steroid cover, this may result in a state of shock, known as an Addisonian crisis, which is a medical emergency.

So Your Dog Has Addison’s Disease The diagnosis is in; it’s Addison’s disease. All of us here at AddisonDogs.com remember hearing those words from our vet. Sometimes they brought up feelings of sadness, or fear, occasionally relief to know what’s going on. Then the vet starts talking about mineralo-somethings and prednisone and DOCP and daily this and monthly that and soon your head is swimming. You just want your dog back. That’s how AddisonDogs.com came to be. Please use Navigation Menu at the bottom if you can read this. The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys. What is Addison’s disease anyway? Let’s start with a brief overview of Addison’s disease. It is the common name for hypoadrenocorticism, or adrenal insufficiency. It is a disease with symptoms that are common to many other ailments, making diagnosis difficult and sometimes a process of elimination. But once Addison’s is correctly diagnosed, a properly treated dog can live a normal, active life. The adrenal , one on each kidney, is made up of two layers, the cortex and the medulla. The outer area, or cortex, secretes corticosteroid hormones such as cortisol and aldosterone. The medulla, part of the sympathetic nervous system, secretes epinephrine (adrenaline), which is generally not affected by Addison’s.
