A lot of parents across this country will be able to identify with my situation because they have experienced a similar one with their own child or family member. However, in one particular way mine is different. My son happens to be a household name known worldwide. He is AJ McLean of the award-winning pop group, the Backstreet Boys. He and his band mates worked hard for several years to achieve their success. But with fame comes sacrifice and sometimes, as with my son, the stage lights fade and become a swirling black hole of drug addiction. All of this has convinced me of one simple fact. Love, intervention and the proper professional treatment can lead to a healthy, recovering lifestyle.

About Me
I have found it to be beneficial to provide some history about myself so that people will relate to who I am. I am John G. Banks, and I was born in December of 1950 (which makes me 54 years of age). I was raised in Sacramento attending Ethel I. Baker elementary, Fern Bacon Junior High, and Luther Burbank High School. I graduated from there in 1968. I went to work for Lucky Stores in 1967 and remained there until I was drafted into the Army in 1970. I was discharged in 1972 and went back to work with Luckys. The military made a man out of me and by doing so, taught me to drink like a man. It is important to note that someone in recovery needing spiritual values did not find them through religion. It was very clear to me that religion and I did not mix very well. I became a Christian in 1994 even though Alcoholics Anonymous had given me some positive insight into a God of my understanding. I still struggled with a 21 year history of drug and alcohol abuse. I had come to the point in my life that reality and my way of life collided with one another. Here I was a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, a recovering addict/alcoholic, codependent to the bone and not a clue where I was heading. Joining the church did provide the guidance that I needed and it was there that I found a loving God who would forgive me.

A global 12step Fellowship offering peer assistance with recovery from cocaine and crack addiction. Includes literature, self-help resources, and membership information.
http://www.ca.org/
Cocaine Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from their addiction. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop using cocaine and all other mind-altering substances. There are no dues or fees for membership; we are fully self supporting through our own contributions. We are not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization, or institution. We do not wish to engage in any controversy and we neither endorse nor oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay free from cocaine and all other mind-altering substances, and to help others achieve the same freedom. We use the Twelve Step Recovery Program, because it has already been proven that the Twelve Step Recovery Program works. Cocaine Anonymous is open to all persons who state a desire to stop using cocaine, including "crack"

  • Having few healthy boundaries, we become sexually involved with and/or emotionally attached to people without knowing them.
  • Fearing abandonment and loneliness, we stay in and return to painful, destructive relationships, concealing our dependency needs from ourselves and others, growing more isolated and alienated from friends and loved ones, ourselves, and God.
  • Fearing emotional and/or sexual deprivation, we compulsively pursue and involve ourselves in one relationship after another, sometimes having more than one sexual or emotional liaison at a time.
  • We confuse love with neediness, physical and sexual attraction, pity and/or the need to rescue or be rescued.

    160. Recovering From The Recovery Movement (by Ron Rhodes)
by Ron Rhodes. Has the recovery movement made the concept of addiction meaningless?

    "Recovering from the Recovery Movement"
    by Ron Rhodes
The words "addiction" and "recovery" have become household words in our society. The song "Addicted to Love" was a number one best seller this past year in the secular rock music world. At the time of this writing, the album "Addicted to Jesus," by Carmen, is the top selling Christian album in the United States. Today recovery experts tell us that people with various behavioral problems are addicted to those behaviors. Hence, there are not only drug and alcohol addicts, but also sex addicts, love addicts, money addicts, shoplifting addicts, child abuse addicts, fast boat addicts, successful business addicts, religious addicts, and a host of others.
Such "addicts" are in need of "recovery," we are told, and the recovery industry has virtually exploded in the past decade. One indicator of this is that the Hallmark company has recently released a "recovery" line of 51 cards. The company is also marketing recovery bookmarks, buttons, key chains, framed prints, mugs, journals, magnets, T-shirts, and even self-stick notes.
There are recovery groups for just about any problem one can imagine. Groups include Overeaters Anonymous, Sex Addicts Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, Spenders Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous, Fundamentalists Anonymous, Parents Anonymous, Child Abusers Anonymous, Workaholics Anonymous, Shoplifters Anonymous, Pills Anonymous, and Emotions Anonymous.
