advertisement Abstinence is as easy to me as temperance would be difficult Samuel Johnson (1709-1784)English Author
Addiction and Recovery and OCD
1 : the quality or state of being addicted (addiction to reading)
2 : compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance (as heroin, nicotine, or alcohol) characterized by tolerance and by well-defined physiological symptoms upon withdrawal; broadly : persistent compulsive use of a substance known by the user to be harmful
: the act, process, or an instance of recovering

Most of us
are about as eager to be changed
as we were to be born, and go through our changes in a similar state of shock. I am recovering from addiction, or alcoholism if you prefer ( alcohol being just the last of a long line of drugs I used), on the 12 step path. I do not speak for any of the fellowships. What I write here and on my other pages is just my experience . Take it for what it is worth. There are other paths of recovery from addiction, but I cannot speak of those not having any experience that I can pass on. Whenever I give a talk or share my experiences with newcomers, I am almost always a little hesitant to share what my early recovery was like. My experience of early recovery, say the first 18 months or so, was not pretty nor very typical. I am Dual Diagnosed. In other words I am an addict and mentally ill with OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder). "Self-medicating," using alcohol and other drugs in part to mask the symptoms of OCD, kept me out there a long time after I knew I was an alcoholic. When I stopped drinking, the disorder I live with and just being newly sober and emotionally raw, made life very difficult. My marriage fell apart, I lost my job, had no place to live that I could call my own. All the stuff that is supposed to happen before you get sober. Things were so difficult for me my sponsor once announced to my home group that if I ever had a good day I would relapse. Only partly joking I believe.

Addiction and Recovery Asylum
My time before recovery was spent solely around my addiction. Recovery is not easy. One needs a support system of others who have been there. Your chances are slim unless you give yourself over to a new way of living. I have been through a process of totally restructuring everything about myself, and is only possible with the help of a power greater than myself. I have seen miracles, and am so grateful. My life has taken a 180 degree turn since I've come clean. Yours can too!

Praise for "The Truth About Addiction and Recovery" A calm, reasoned, and highly effective alternative to the disease model of addiction and other bad habits. Electrifying and profoundly helpful.
Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion Required reading for addicts, their associates, and those who try to treat them.
Peele and Brodsky's ideas about addiction relief may prove to be as prophetic as their prediction of the 'love addict' industry.
A scientifically well-grounded view of how people can overcome their addictions.
Praise from readers
Thank you (and Archie Brodsky and Mary Arnold) for writing a great book . It saved my life, and drastically cut down the trial and error time I would have to go through to become a social drinker.

"At Least Two Deaths Due To Lack of Methadone" Tue. Sep. 6 - According to Samantha-Hope-Atkins, At least two death's in the Gulf-Coast region due to lack of Methadone. The toll on recovering and struggling addicted people is expected to rise dramaticaly. "This is a trajedy not unexpected due to the fact that 400,000 or-so people in the region would qualify under the guidelines for needing treatment" says Hope-Atkins. "My personal feelings are we need people of means in the recovering population to step-in and help fund Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselors in this hour of tremendous need" Attebery says. The well-intentioned help that is available is doing a tremendous job, and the every=day people are doing great but, it is time for some professional help..
"A Plea For Funds To Pay For Certified Counselors" Mon. Sep. 5 - Samantha-Hope-Atkins and Recovery Net Radio send out a cry for immediate funding from Philanthropic Organizations that deal in substance abuse issues to cut the red-tape an send funds to hire certified Drug and Alcohol Counselors. The counselors were displaced by Katrina and unemployed due to the lack of any structure and the loss of thier treatment facilities. "We Need To Act Now" Hope-Atkins says, to alleviate further suffering by the recovering communities. While many have been bused to other area's that have medical personel it is highly doubtful they are equipted to deal with the real treatment needs of the suffering addicted population. Recovery Net Radio will do everything possible to get the help needed..

Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month Events in North Carolina
(Time dated information)
RALEIGH – Governor Michael F. Easley has proclaimed September Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in North Carolina. His proclamation states, "I encourage all citizens of our State to support this year's theme, Join the Voices for Recovery: Celebrating Health," by joining statewide and national efforts to promote the effectiveness of treatment, and by supporting the men, women, youth and their families who are seeking treatment services in our communities. Alcoholism and other drug addictions take a heavy toll by creating serious health problems for almost one in every ten people. This directly affects approximately 730,000 North Carolinians. The financial cost in North Carolina is also great, with costs estimated at over $8 billion. The good news is that with proper treatment, people with alcoholism and other drug addictions can and do recover. Recovery month events throughout the state celebrate that fact and also that prevention efforts work to decrease the number of people becoming addicted to alcohol and other drugs.

T his Web site was launched in early 1995, and was amongst the first sites dedicated to, not only providing alternative theories of addictive behavior and change, but providing addiction information in general. HabitSmart has been alive and kicking since its debut, despite occasional objections to its non-twelve step focus, and primarily because of the hundreds of positive responses to the site. The site offers an abundance of information about addictive behavior: theories of habit endurance and habit change as well as tips for effectively managing problematic habitual behavior. Many people grappling with addictive behavior are not aware that, as opposed to just one, there are many potentially effective routes to change. In as much as AA and associated 12-step approaches have been useful to many, one size does not fit all. Furthermore, many who align themselves with the 12-step model can augment their recovery with other information and tools.

The Self Scoring Alcohol Check-up is an on-line questionnaire for people concerned about their alcohol consumption. It is hoped that filling out the form will enable respondents to examine important aspects of this behavior and consider various change options.
