      Guillain-Barre syndrome
      Superficial anterior muscles
      Definition :
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis, which often follows an infectious illness.
      Alternative Names :
Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
Causes, incidence, and risk factors :
Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause kill the axon part of the nerve cell (denervation), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another.
The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a respiratory (lung) infection or gastrointestinal (gut) infection. Frequently, signs of the original infection have disappeared before the signs of Guillain-Barre begin.

Autoimmune diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body. The causes of autoimmune diseases are still obscure, and most of these diseases are probably the result of multiple circumstances: for example, a genetic predisposition triggered by an infection. Women tend to be affected more often by autoimmune disorders, nearly 79% of autoimmune disease patients in the USA are women . It is not known why this is the case, although hormone levels have been shown to affect the severity of the disease See also : Immune system Below is a listing of some actual and suspected autoimmune disorders, with brief descriptions and pointers to full articles.

Overview GBS is short for "GUILLAIN-BARRE SYNDROME" (pronounced Ghee-Yan-Barray), also called acute idiopathic polyneuritis and Landry's ascending paralysis. It is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves, those outside the brain and spinal cord. The syndrome occurs sporadically. It can't be predicted, and can occur at any age and in either sex. It can vary greatly in severity from the mildest case, that may not even be brought to a doctor's attention, to a devastating illness with almost complete paralysis that brings a patient close to death. Because it is so rare, most of the public has never heard of the illness, or if they have, know little about it. Yet for those affected, the illness can be severely frightening and disabling. Causes The causes of Guillain-Barre Syndrome are not known. A variety of events seem to trigger the illness. Many cases occur a few days to a few weeks after a viral infection. These infections include the common cold, sore throat and stomach and intestinal illnesses with diarrhea. Vaccinations may also precipitate its onset.

An excess of self-reactive helper T (Th)-cell activity induced, for example, by altered forms of self-antigen or with antigen that cross-reacts with self-antigen, which might be produced by a coupling of chemicals or drugs (e.g., hydralazine) or viruses to self-antigen: the modified chemical (drug)-host or viral-host antigens would then trigger a self-reactive Th-effect and elicit autoantibody production. b.
