Cytomegalovirus was isolated from the PBBC from a patient with acute idiopathic polyneuritis. Guillain-Barre syndrome
Definition
Guillain-Barre syndrome is a disorder caused by nerve inflammation involving progressive muscle weakness or paralysis, which often follows an infectious illness.
Alternative Names
Landry-Guillain-Barre syndrome; Acute idiopathic polyneuritis; Infectious polyneuritis; Acute inflammatory polyneuropathy
Causes
Guillain-Barre syndrome is an acute type of nerve inflammation. The inflammation damages portions of the nerve cell, resulting in muscle weakness or paralysis and sensory loss. The damage usually includes loss of the myelin sheath of the nerve (demyelination ), which slows the conduction of impulses through the nerve. The damage can also cause kill the axon part of the nerve cell (denervation), which stops nerve function entirely. Without the axon, messages cannot be transferred from one nerve cell to another. The exact cause of this disorder is unknown. It may occur at any age but is most common in people of both sexes between the ages 30 and 50. It often follows a minor infection, usually a respiratory (lung) infection or gastrointestinal (gut) infection. Frequently, signs of the original infection have disappeared before the signs of Guillain-Barre begin.

Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with Guillain-Barre syndrome is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.

GENERAL INFORMATION
DESCRIPTION
Guillain-Barrqe syndrome is an inflammatory condition of nerves and muscles that causes rapid weakness and loss of sensation. The central nervous systemincluding the brain, the coverings of the brain (meninges), and the spinal cord and peripheral nerves and muscles are involved. Guillain-Barrqe syndrome can affect both sexes, all ages, but occurs far more commonly in adults than children.
Appropriate health care includes:
  • Physician's monitoring of general condition and medications.
  • Hospitalization.
  • Self-care after diagnosis.
    Early stages:
  • Muscle weakness in hands and feet, arms and legs, abdomen and chest. The weakness spreads within 72 hours; it may create life-threatening breathing difficulty for your child.
  • Shock (weakness, faintness, cold hands and feet, rapid heartbeat, sweating). Later stages:

    (Acute Idiopathic Polyneuritis)
Guillain-Barré (Ghee-yaw Bah-ray) Syndrome, also called acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and Landry's ascending paralysis, is a disorder of the peripheral nerves, those outside the brain and spinal cord. It is typically characterized by the rapid onset of muscle weakness and often, paralysis of the legs, arms and breathing muscles. The cause of Guillain-Barre' syndrome is not known; and why the disorder only occurs in certain patients is still not known. Research to date indicates that the nerves of the GBS patient are attacked by the body's own defense system against disease-antibodies and white blood cells. As a result of this autoimmune attack, the nerve insulation (myelin) and sometimes even the covered conducting part of the nerve (axon) is damaged.
The rapid onset of (ascending) weakness, frequently accompanied by abnormal sensations and pain that affect both sides of the body similarly, is a common presenting picture, and quite often, the patient's symptoms and physical exam are sufficient to indicate the diagnosis. The severity of Guillain-Barre' syndrome can vary greatly. In its milder form, it may cause a waddling or ducklike gait, and perhaps some tingling and upper limb weakness that may briefly, for days or weeks, impair a patients lifestyle. Some primary care physicians have described patients who complained of mild brief tingling and/or limb weakness accompanying or following a viral illness, such as a sore throat or diarrhea. Such a set of symptoms may represent a very mild form of GBS. In contrast to such mild forms, at the other extreme a GBS patient may become almost totally paralyzed and fraught with complications.

    Diagnosis
Guillain-Barre Syndrome What is Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disease of the nervous system due to damage to the myelin sheath around nerves. The myelin sheath acts as an insulator the same as rubber or plastic around electrical wires. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is the most frequent acquired (as opposed to inherited) nerve disease (neuropathy). In many cases it follows shortly after a virus infection. It is also rarely associated with immunizations, surgery, and childbirth. What causes Guillain-Barre Syndrome?
