“Garbage science!” That is how psychiatrist Eric London characterized what he had just heard from several fellow parents of autistic children. Some of the parents were also MDs or professionals in other fields. “If you presented your views to a journal-reading club at a medical school,” Dr. London continued, “they would be thrown out the door.” The view that Dr. London objected to so strongly-that perfectly normal children had become severely autistic shortly after being inoculated with vaccines containing large amounts of highly toxic mercury-had been presented by parent-attendees at a National Institutes of Health meeting on October 23, 2000. The conference on “The Role of the Environment in Autism,” was sponsored by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Continuing to deride what he called “garbage science,” Dr. London went on to explain that scientific progress proceeds like the building of a brick wall. “You start with a solid foundation to which you add, very systematically, experimentally proven facts, which fit neatly into place, brick by brick.”

Sallie Bernard, ARC Research, 14 Commerce Drive, Cranford, NJ 07901 USA, 908.276.6300, fax 908.276.1301 Summary INTRODUCTION Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental syndrome with onset prior to age 36 months. Diagnostic criteria consist of impairments in sociality and communication plus repetitive and stereotypic behaviors (1). Traits strongly associated with autism include movement disorders and sensory dysfunctions (2). Although autism may be apparent soon after birth, most autistic children experience at least several months, even a year or more of normal development followed by regression, defined as loss of function or failure to progress (2,3,4). The neurotoxicity of mercury (Hg) has long been recognized (5). Primary data derive from victims of contaminated fish (Japan - Minamata Disease) or grain (Iraq, Guatemala, Russia); from acrodynia (Pink Disease) induced by Hg in teething powders; and from individual instances of mercury poisoning (HgP), many occurring in occupational settings (e.g., Mad Hatter's Disease). Animal and in vitro studies also provide insights into the mechanisms of Hg toxicity. More recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have determined that the typical amount of Hg injected into infants and toddlers via childhood immunizations has exceeded government safety guidelines on an individual (6) and cumulative vaccine basis (7). The mercury in vaccines derives from thimerosal (TMS), a preservative which is 49.6% ethylmercury (eHg) (7).

MERCURY COMPOUNDS
Mercury compounds are federal hazardous air pollutants and were identified as toxic air contaminants in April 1993 under AB 2728. CAS Registry Numbers: Mercury 7439-97-6; Mercuric chloride 7487-94-7; Methyl mercury 22967-92-6 Molecular Formulas: Hg, HgCl , CH Hg Three of the numerous mercury compounds are mentioned here. Many are explosively unstable or undergo hazardous reactions. When heated to decomposition, they emit highly toxic fumes of mercury (Sax, 1989). Elemental mercury is an odorless, silver white, very heavy, mobile, liquid metal, which is slightly volatile at ordinary temperatures. Solid mercury is tin-white, ductile, and malleable. Pure mercury does not tarnish on exposure to ordinary temperatures of air, and forms alloys with most metals, except iron. It combines with sulfur at ordinary temperatures, and reacts with nitric and hot sulfuric acid but not with dilute hydrochloric acid or alkalies (Merck, 1989). It is insoluble in water, alcohol, and ether but soluble in lipids. Mercury has high surface tension and electrical conductivity (Sax, 1987). Mercuric chloride occurs as odorless, white crystals or powder. It is slightly volatile at ordinary temperatures, and appreciably volatile at 100 oC. It is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, pyridine, glycerol, and acetic acid and is incompatible with some formates, sulfur and phosphorus compounds, proteins, alkalies, ammonia, and metals (Merck, 1989).

A Fact Sheet for Health Professionals - Elemental Mercury
Mercury has been known since ancient times and is commonly called quick silver or azogue. It is toxic in all three of its environmental forms: 1) elemental (liquid) mercury, 2) mercury salts and 3) organic mercury. This fact sheet will address the health issues related to elemental (liquid) mercury exposures. What is elemental mercury and how is it used? Elemental mercury is a shiny, silver-gray metal that is a liquid at room temperature. It can be found in thermometers, barometers, sphygmomanometers, dental amalgams, batteries, fluorescent lights and electrical switches. It also was commonly found in household latex paint prior to the early 1990s. In some cultures, elemental mercury is used in rituals, love potions and folk medicines. Some of these activities may include swallowing mercury capsules, sprinkling it in homes around baby cribs, sprinkling it in vehicles, burning it in candles, wearing it in amulets and directly rubbing it on the skin. How can people be exposed to elemental mercury?

Greenwashing NEWS Oct 25, 2001 About the dangers of a little mercury... In a press-release from PROVE (Parents Requesting Open Vaccine Education), dated October 17, 2001, it's revealed that the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) in the evaluation process of potential links between Thimerosal in vaccines and autism was not as open as it ought to be. According to the press release, the first evaluation of data showed a significantly increased risk, but this evaluation was kept confidential. When data were presented the original data were complemented, and this procedure of complementation rendered the risk assessment inconclusive. A number of lawsuits are going on, where it's claimed that thimerosal in vaccines caused neurological damage to infants, leading to the development of autism. The original data showed an increased risk of a magnitude, that previously has been taken as proof of exposures causing disease, according to the lead attorney in the filed cases, by courts of law in the United States. Conclusive or not-conclusive makes a big difference when stakes are high. Thousands of families, the attorney says, so stakes are high. So far the press release. Thimerosal is a preservative for vaccines and other drugs, such as nasal drops, ointments and drips for ophthalmic use. What makes Thimerosal controversial is its contents of mercury, and the potential neurotoxic effect from this heavy metal. There are other mercury containing preservatives used in drugs, but in vaccines Thimerosal is the substance of choice. The filed lawsuits claim that children with autism, who have participated in the vaccination programs are victims of mercuric neurotoxic effects from Thimerosal in the vaccines. The possible link between Thimerosal and autism is the subject for investigation by the CDC. The outcome of this process will of course be of great importance for what happens in the courts.

I am trying to find some alternative to the conventional methods of pharmacueticals Diet helps but I came to believe the conclusion of the majority of the medical community that adhd is a physical disorder and a lot of people wont ever "think" there way out of it and I was one of them and medicine might and did help me. There are posts here about "herbal" products if you look. When buying something not scientifically tested let the buyer beware. If a product makes outrageous claims of succuss and is made up of some simple herbs dont you think big pharma would of made it into a pill and patented it if there was any scinece to back up the claim? Don't you think MERK would be peddling the active componenets of garlic as a proproietary frormula if the claims GARLIQUE made in Parade magazine ads every week were supported by real double blind scientific studies? The real danger with herbal medicines and adhd imo is metals. When tested a very LARGE percentage of "herbal rememdies" shipped here from china had heavy metal contamination. A lot of the anto medicine people say it's enviromental toxins yet so many herbal remedies have unlisted toxins...do the googles the truth is out there lol

Binstock Sallie Bernard, ARC Research, 14 Commerce Drive, Cranford, NJ 07901 USA, 908.276.6300, fax 908.276.1301 Summary Autism is a syndrome characterized by impairments in social relatedness and communication, repetitive behaviors, abnormal movements, and sensory dysfunction. Recent epidemiological studies suggest that autism may affect 1 in 150 U. S. children. Exposure to mercury can cause immune, sensory, neurological, motor, and behavioral dysfunctions similar to traits defining or associated with autism, and the similarities extend to neuroanatomy, neurotransmitters, and biochemistry. Thimerosal, a preservative added to many vaccines, has become a major source of mercury in children who, within their first two years, may have received a quantity of mercury that exceeds safety guidelines. A review of medical literature and U.S. government data suggests that
i) many cases of idiopathic autism are induced by early mercury exposure from thimerosal;
(ii) this type of autism represents an unrecognized mercurial syndrome; and

Some experts have decried efforts by concerned observers to criticize the use of MMR, sometimes alluding to "victimization" of the pertussis vaccine in the 1970s. Wakefield made the important point that the pertussis vaccine did cause neurological problems, to the extent of at least 80-percent disablement, in about 900 children. Large financial compensations were legally assessed (100) that provided impetus to replace the particular vaccine formulation with a safer version. Opponents of the current MMR vaccine suggest it could be made safer in its triple form, or else split into its three components to be given in three separately spaced shots.

Mercury and its Many Forms
Broken thermometers are the cause of numerous calls to the Poison Center. Thermometers with a silver line contain elemental mercury. Thermometers with a red or blue liquid do NOT contain mercury. There is much misinformation about mercury, its various forms and its dangers. Three different types of mercury exist, varying in their levels of toxicity. They are elemental mercury, inorganic mercury and organic mercury.
Elemental mercury
Mercury is an extremely heavy, odorless, silver colored liquid. Mercury exists as a natural element in the earth's crust. Elemental mercury is also known as metallic mercury, liquid mercury, liquid silver and quicksilver.
What are sources of exposure to elemental mercury?
Sources of elemental mercury in the home include broken mercury thermometers, broken fluorescent light bulbs, dental amalgam fillings, mercury containing latex paints, extraction of gold from ore using mercury, and contaminated clothing from workers in thermometer making plants. Elemental mercury is also used as a Mexican folk medicine to treat "empacho," a chronic stomach disorder.
