This section discusses potential health effects from exposures during the period from conception to maturity at 18 years of age in humans. Potential effects on children resulting from exposures of the parents are also considered.
Children are at risk of being exposed to metallic mercury that is not safely contained, to mercury that may be brought home on work clothes or tools, or to methylmercury-contaminated foods. Methylmercury eaten or swallowed by a pregnant woman or metallic mercury that enters her body from breathing contaminated air can also pass into the developing child. Inorganic mercury and methylmercury can also pass from a mother's body into breast milk and into a nursing infant.

Project Summary:
Objectives:
Determine if metal toxicity is related to the cause and/or symptoms of autism.
If a possible link is found, then carry out a double-blind, placebo-controlled study of the effect of removing toxic metals on the symptoms of autism.
Experimental Approach
Collect a wide variety of medical, dental, psychological, speech, and environmental exposure data on fifty children with autism, their mothers, and a control group.
Possibly evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Consensus Detoxification Protocol for Children with Autism, developed at a national workshop in February, 2001. Expected Results The cause of autism is currently unknown. This study will help determine if metal toxicity is a possible cause of some of the cases of autism.

MECHANISMS a. Exposure Mechanism Vaccine injections are a known source of mercury (Plotkin and Orenstein, 1999), and the typical amount of mercury given to infants and toddlers in this manner exceeds government safety limits, according to Neal Halsey of the American Academy of Pediatrics (1999) and William Egan of the Biologics Division of the FDA (1999). Most vaccines given to children 2 years and under are stored in a solution containing thimerosal, which is 49.6% mercury by weight. Once inside humans, thimerosal (sodium ethylmercurrithio-salicylate) is metabolized to ethylmercury and thiosalicylate (Gosselin et al, 1984). The vaccines mixed with this solution are DTaP, HIB, and Hepatitis B (Egan, 1999). Thimerosal is not an integral component of vaccines, but is a preservative added to prevent bacterial contamination. Many vaccine products are available without the thimerosal preservative; however, these alternatives have not been widely used (Egan, 1999). In addition, thimerosal is used during the manufacturing process for a number of vaccines, from which trace amounts are still present in the final injected product (FDA, personal communication; Smith-Kline press release on Hepatitis B, March 31, 2000).

Ralph R. Scobey, M.D.
Syracuse, N.Y. The disease that we now know as poliomyelitis was not designated as such until about the middle of the 19th Century. Prior to that, it was designated by many different names at various times and in different localities. The simple designations, paralysis, palsy and apoplexy, were some of the earliest names applied to what is now called poliomyelitis. Paralysis, resulting from poisoning, has probably been known since the time of Hippocrates (460-437 B.C.), Boerhaave, Germany, (1765) stated: "We frequently find persons rendered paralytic by exposing themselves imprudently to quicksilver, dispersed into vapors by the fire, as gilders, chemists, miners, etc., and perhaps there are other poisons, which may produce the same disease, even externally applied." In 1824, Cooke, England, stated: "Among the exciting causes of the partial palsies we may reckon the poison of certain mineral substances, particularly of quick silver, arsenic, and lead. The fumes of these metals or the receptance of them in solution into the stomach, have often causes paralysis."
