acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) treatment options discussed including surgery, gamma knife radiosurgery and fractionated radiotherapy.
http://www.acousticneuroma.neurosurgery.pitt.edu/
Comparing Management Options for Acoustic Neuroma Patients (For physicians seeking CME credits, please see Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Acoustic Neuromas: Sorting Out Treatment Options , an online course sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh and the Department of Neurological Surgery.) A patient with acoustic neuroma has several treatment options including observation, surgical resection, stereotactic radiosurgery, and fractionated radiotherapy. Many patients choose between radiosurgery and resection based on their own specific goals and their understanding of possible results. The decision can be difficult, and depends on the sources and strengths of information given to the patient. These include discussions with surgeons and other physicians, written material from peer-reviewed medical journals, handouts from support groups, internet based reports (of variable reliability), and discussions between patients with acoustic neuromas. We believe that acoustic neuroma information provided from the peer-reviewed medical literature is the most reliable for patient education. Nevertheless, some acoustic neuroma patients become confused by what they perceive as conflicting opinions amongst physicians. Many such physicians provide only one kind of treatment and may appear to be biased toward their own approach.

http://www.ANarchive.org Welcome to our informational web site for Acoustic Neuroma (Vestibular Schwannoma) patients dedicated to providing you with information, advice, and stories to help make informed decisions regarding your treatment options and other Acoustic Neuroma management issues. Acoustic Neuroma is a double-edged sword On the one hand , the expected outcome from Acoustic Neuroma treatment really depends on the choice of treatment and the experience of the team. The outcomes range from permanent disability to no complications whatsoever. A good outcome is never guaranteed; all we Acoustic Neuroma patients can do is try to increase our odds by choosing our treatment from an informed viewpoint. On the other hand , there really are NO Acoustic Neuroma specialists that can give you accurate up-to-date information for all options. You MUST see the provider of each type of treatment separately, have each one give you their statistics and their expectations for your outcome, then make up your mind yourself.

This is a slightly smaller dose of radiation than previously, but they are still claiming a 96% kill rate on the neuromas, with less than 2% facial nerve damage, less than 2% trigeminal nerve damage and 1% of other possible damage. The machine used is a Siemens, fitted with a Radionics micro multi leaf collimator and set up to use IMRT. See

Neuroscience: Gamma Knife Surgery in Michigan Gamma Knife Surgery Offers New Hope The Gamma Knife is a revolutionary type of surgery that uses highly targeted radiation to treat brain abnormalities such as: It treats both benign and malignant brain tumors - including multiple metastases.
How It Works
Each beam emanates from a different location so that tissue along the route to the lesion receives only a harmless, low-dose beam. Together, the gamma beams (201 in all) converge to produce a high dose of radiation at the exact site of the lesion. Thus, the Gamma Knife "cuts" deep into the brain without using a scalpel at all ( See detailed drawing , PDF 271KB). Proven Safety
First developed 30 years ago in Sweden, Gamma Knife surgery has become more refined as software and technology has improved. More than 200,000 patients have undergone the procedure worldwide. Gamma Knife patients generally require no general anesthesia, and because it is noninvasive, there is negligible risk of infection or hemorrhage. Additionally, the technology's submillimeter accuracy avoids damage to surrounding tissues and minimizes radiation exposure to other areas of the brain.
