Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8, 1828, in Nantes, France. His parents were of a seafaring tradition, a factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, Jules Verne ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was caught and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for the theatre grew. Later in 1850, Jules Verne's first play was published. His father was outraged when he heard that Jules was not going to continue law, so he discontinued the money he was giving him to pay for his expenses in Paris. This forced Verne to make money by selling his stories.
After spending many hours in Paris libraries studying geology, engineering, and astronomy, Jules Verne published his first novel

Verne's stories, written for adolescents as well as adults, caught the enterprising spirit of the 19th century, its uncritical fascination about scientific progress and inventions. His works were often written in the form of a travel book, which took the readers on a voyage to the moon in From the Earth to the Moon (1865) or to another direction as in A Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864). Many of Verne's ideas have been hailed as prophetic. Among his best-known books is the classic adventure story Around the World in Eighty Days " Ah - what a journey - what a marvelous and extraordinary journey! Here we had entered the earth by one volcano, and we had come out by another. And this other was situated more than twelve hundred leagues from Sneffels, from that drear country of Iceland cast away on the confines of the earth... We had abandoned the region of eternal snows for that infinite verdure, and had left over our heads the gray fog of the icy regions to come back to the azure sky of Sicily! " (from

A version of this article was first published in Contemporary Authors (Gale Research Company, Chicago, 1991), pp. 462-65, with, however, more than half the text missing, and false information inserted at the beginning of the article. The original version appears here, therefore, for the first time. Jules Verne has a very considerable renown with the public, but one that often has little to do with his writing, and is not always even internally consistent. If one asks the man in the street who “Jules Verne” is, a reply will always be forthcoming. To the average American, Verne was the inventor of science fiction, and predicted much of the twentieth century, including the exploration of the depths of the sea, of the interior of the earth, and of outer space. He is also meant to have foreseen the submarine, the aeroplane, and perhaps the motor-car. But the same person will rarely be able to name the actual books where this happened, will be vague as to when the predictions were made, and will virtually never offer any information about the writer himself. Indeed, he may assume by default that Verne was an American. After all, Djools Vurn is an all-American name; and how many foreign writers have adopted local names? If one poses similar questions in other countries, one gets remarkably similar replies, with one important variation. The Italians have their Giulio Verne, the Spanish, Julio Verne, and so on—exactly as if he were a native son of the whole world. Only in his own country, France, does the name “Vairn” produce a different reaction, centred more on the man and especially his works.

Chapters: Chapter 1 IN WHICH PHILEAS FOGG AND PASSEPARTOUT ACCEPT EACH OTHER, THE ONE AS MASTER, THE OTHER AS MAN
Mr. Phileas Fogg lived, in 1872, at No. 7, Saville Row, Burlington Gardens, the house in which Sheridan died in 1814. He was one of the most noticeable members of the Reform Club, though he seemed always to avoid attracting attention; an enigmatical personage, about whom little was known, except that he was a polished man of the world. People said that he resembled Byronat least that his head was Byronic; but he was a bearded, tranquil Byron, who might live on a thousand years without growing old. Phileas Fogg was a member of the Reform, and that was all.

Verne, Jules (1828-1905)
Born in Nantes and trained in law, Verne may not have been the first science fiction writer ( Lucian , Mary Shelley, and Edgar Allan Poe all having prior claims to that accolade) but he was certainly the first to explore the genre systematically and to make a fortune from it. Although he must have been familiar with the enthusiasm of his Parisian contemporary Flammarion for the possibility of life on other worlds, Verne barely touches upon the alien theme in his novels. The one minor exception is to be found in his only extraterrestrial venture, From the Earth to the Moon (1865) and its sequel Around the Moon . In the latter, he exploits Hansen's hypothesis that the Moon's far-side has an atmosphere, water and, possibly, life. His astronauts glimpse "... real seas, oceans, widely distributed, reflecting on their surface all the dazzling magic of the fires of space; and, lastly, on the surface of the continents, large dark masses, looking like immense forests ..." In other respects, his lunar novels remarkably presaged Apollo, even to the extent of describing a three-man crew, a Florida launch site and a splashdown point in the Pacific just three miles from where Apollo 11 landed. All Verne's early novels captured the Victorian enthusiasm for science and technology, though the optimistic ideology in them may have stemmed more from the urging of Verne's publisher, the commercially-minded Pierre-Jules Hetzel, than Verne himself who seems by nature to have been a techno-skeptic.
