Jules Gabriel Verne was born in 1828, in Nates, France. Jules' parents were of a sefaring tradition, one factor which influenced his writings. As a boy, Jules Verne ran off to be a cabin boy on a merchant ship, but he was cought and returned to his parents. In 1847 Jules was sent to study law in Paris. While there, however, his passion for theatre grew. Later in 1850, Jules Verne's first play was published. His father was outraged when he heard that Jules was not going to continue law, so he disconinued the money he ws giving him to pay for his expenses in paris. This forced Verne to make money by selling his stories. After spending many hours in Paris libraries studying geology, engeneering, and astronomy, Jules Verne published his first novel Five Weeks in a Balloon. Soon he started writing novels such as Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Because of the popularity of these and other novels, Jules Verne became a very rich man. In 1876, he bought a large yacht and sailed around Europe. The last novel befor Jules Verne's death was The Invasion of the Sea. Jules Verne died in the city of Amines in 1905.

WRITER (FRANCE) BORN 8 Feb 1828, Nantes - DIED 24 Mar 1905, Amiens: boulevard Longueville (now: 44, Bd Jules Verne)
GRAVE LOCATION Amiens: Cimetière La Madeleine
Father of the science fiction novel. Jules Verne grew up in Nantes, where his father was a prosperous lawyer. To be able to continue the practice he went to Paris to study law. There he was introduced in literary circles by his uncle and under the influence of Victor Hugo and Dumas Fils he started writing plays himself. When he was a 22 a comedy from his hand was performed in Paris. He passed his law exams all the same.
Verne was an admirer of Edgar Allen Poe and influenced by him he wrote his story "Les Premiers navires de la marine mexicaine et Un Voyage en ballon" (1851), about a voyage in a balloon.
In 1856 he went to Amiens for the wedding of a friend, but he fell in love with the mayors sister, Honorine, and married her in 1857.
Initially his writings weren't very succesful and he was a stockbroker as well until 1863. By then the publisher Jules Hetzel had started to publish his 'voyages extraordinaires' and would do so until the end of Verne's career. Verne spent much time on research for his books and his spectacular stories became popular all over the world.

The Works of Jules Verne
Verne, Jules (1828-1905), French author, who is often regarded as the father of science fiction. He was born in Nantes, France, and ran away to sea at the age of 11. After he was sent home in disgrace, he vowed to travel only in his imagination. He carried out this pledge in more than 50 works that combine scientific fantasy and exciting adventure. Verne studied law in Paris, and from 1848 until 1863 wrote opera librettos and plays. His interest in science and geographical discovery led him to write on the possibility of exploring Africa in a balloon. Many publishers rejected this work, until...
