Guests: Allyn Lockner Recorder: Tracy Barngrover Niebaum opened and conducted the meeting. The minutes of the last meeting are available on the Internet on the CIA webpage. The address is ciao.da.state.ks.us He began the meeting by discussing a new initiative, AInternet II@ which will be used by the universities. The reason for the creation of this initiative is that Universities are finding that there is a real Abottleneck@ for research work. Jerry discussed how the new system would work. He noted that the gigipops have not been defined and paths were not set. There are 70 out of 125 research universities that have committeed to being a part of Internet II. The cost to each university will be a half million dollars per year. It is not clear yet where the management of the gigipop will be. At this point in the meeting, Allyn Lockner from SRS joined the committee. There was lengthy discussion and brainstorming to come to agreement on the definitions for AKansas State Government@, ATelecommunications@ and ACustomers@. Lockner provided direction for the group and will return to the next meeting to continue brainstorming. A synopsis of what the group arrived at is as follows:

The twelfth Annual MSHA Awards Banquet paid tribute to fallen marine Moy Langhorst, lost in Iraq less than two weeks before the banquet. Each of the 2004 State finalists were recognized. Prom Catering provided a great meal and Steve Bremer hosted the event at his historic Caves. Wihtout any Hall of Fame inductions, the program was short enough to allow everyone to catch up and debate some past handball matches. Gary Rohrer, Steve Subak, Jerry Jordahl and Scott Sayer were thanked and presented with their sponsor shirts. And the 2004 Top Ten handball players were honored and awarded their top-ten shirts. Every table received a goody bag ranging from handballs to T-shirts to distribute among all the guests.
Eight Minnesota Handball Hall of Fame Members are recognized for all of their contributions on and off the courts.

In rememberance of Moy Langhorst and his ultimate sacrafice to his country the MSHA players signed a tournament shirt for the family.

Gary Rohrer Inducted Into the MSHA Hall of Fame
Dr. Gary Rohrer was inducted into the Minnesota State Handball Association Hall of Fame at the annual MSHA Awards Banquet Friday, May 15, 1998. Held at the Fort Snelling Club, this sixth annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony was attended by nearly 100 MSHA members, their spouses and friends of Gary's.
1998 Hall of Fame Inductee Gary Rohrer and wife Saundra Good friend and national doubles partner Paul Schulz presented Gary as the 1998 Hall of Fame inductee. Al O'Neil, Warren Mitchell, Alva (what's your name?) Rankin also spoke on Gary's behalf. Long-time MSHA member Tom Quilling opened the ceremonies by welcoming everyone and introducing secretary Sheldon Silberman who acknowledged all of the top finishes in this year's nineteen different divisions spread over four tournaments (see results). He noted that attendance was once again down from the previous year prompting the board to consider cutting back on the number of tournaments and divisions. An invocation by Steve Subak preceded the banquet meal.

Steve Lamson's New Team for 2004

By Russ Rohrer
Photography: Russ Rohrer Steve feels right at home aboard the CRF250R and it shows.
Steve Lamson gets ready for 2004 with a new team and a new attitude. "Things happen for a reason," Steve observes, recalling the last couple years of his racing career. "I've had some good times, and made fine money, but I'm ready to step it up now. I didn't have the confidence in my equipment to know that I could go the distance. I'm going to change all that now." Steve Lamson knows what it is like to win. He held the 125 National Champion crowns in 1995 and 1996. In 1996 Steve earned an unusual distinction at the Motocross Des Nations, in Jerez Spain; Steve is the only rider to ever win the overall moto on a 125, battling against 250s and 500s. Also, Lammy is 3rd on the list of all time 125 winners, only lead by Ricky Charmichael and Mark Barnett. The last couple of years have been a real life adventure for Steve Lamson. He's had huge deals offered, only to have them taken away. Then he's had great money, but equipment that just wasn't performing. Now he has a new team and a new attitude.

Steve Lamson's Personal Honda CR Shootout

By Russ Rohrer
Photography: Russ Rohrer You can roll the 250's power on earlier and with less clutch action.
Steve Lamson sets his sights on 2004 Supercross and Motocross seasons aboard a Honda in the 125 Class. But on which bike, the CR125 or the CRF250? "I'm excited and motivated to do well next season," Steve says as he suits up for his day of testing on the Honda CR125, and the CRF250. "I'm putting out a huge effort to have the right equipment this next year, and for me, that means I'll be back on a Honda. I just bought a new motorhome, I'm training like crazy, and I'm getting together some great sponsors. The CR125 missed the delivery date to be included in the shootout with the other 125s at Dirt Rider. Now that they are both available, Dirt Rider offered Steve to come out and put some laps on the two bikes. Steve admits, "I've heard good things about the CRF, but I really wanted to put the two bikes head to head and see for myself." The 125 felt light and nimble, but is only a few pound lighter than the 250.

August-September Music by George Stiles
Book and Lyrics by Anthony Drewe
Honk! is the story of a someone who’s…well… different— whose looks instantly kindle prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, he must find his own way home. Along his rollicking and harrowing journey he not only discovers his true beauty but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms. AND everyone else in the barnyard learns an important lesson: Different isn't hateful...Different could be swell.

Site of NEEDHA's Fifteenth Annual Meeting NEEDHA members will again gather next to the water for the 1999 Annual Meeting, but this time it's the Gulf of Mexico, not the Pacific Ocean. The Sandestin Beach Hilton Resort in Florida, midway between Pensacola and Panama City, hosts NEEDHA from March 5-9, 1999. In addition to a broad, sandy beach, the resort features outdoor and indoor pools, sailing, saltwater fishing, ten tennis courts, and sixty-three holes of USGA championship golf. All the rooms are oversized, with a children's sleeping area, a refrigerator, and a balcony with a Gulf view. So bring the family if you can! Excellent air transportation is available into Pensacola and Panama City. The topics for each year's Annual Meeting are carefully selected to provide balance across the many areas to which a department head must pay attention and to provide some insights into the future. We are particularly excited about this year's meeting that looks into coming changes in the electrical engineering profession (biological aspects, microelectrical-mechanical systems, optical processing, etc.) and in electrical engineering education (distance and asynchronous learning, new programs such as software engineering and information engineering, etc.). Of course, we won't neglect more immediate matters such as ABET accreditation. A mixture of general sessions and small-group breakouts has been planned. See the tentative program for details.
