Leaflet number 4: The Adventures of Thomas Paine
Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was the most remarkable political writer and radical thinker of the late 18th century; producing a series of influential pamphlets and books advocating political and social change which championed the rights of the common man. He played a prominent part in both the American and French Revolutions, although he was eventually outlawed in Britain, mainly because of his views on religion and the abolition of the monarchy. He had a great influence on later generations of people in the Humanist tradition, particularly through the two-volume biography of him of 1892 by Moncure Conway, after whom Conway Hall Humanist Centre in London is named. Thomas Paine coined what is, perhaps, the best short definition of Humanism: "My country is the world,
my religion is to do good". However, in The Age of Reason he says "I believe in one God, and no more; and I hope for happiness beyond this life". He also says, "My own mind is my own church". He saw god in nature but in no book or other 'revelation'. He specifically says in The Age of Reason that he disbelieves that the Bible and the Koran are 'the word of God'. So, Thomas Paine was neither an agnostic, nor an atheist, but a deist. Such a viewpoint essentially says that a god created the universe at the beginning of things and left the great world-machine to work out its own self-evolution according to natural law.

Thomas Paine "The most detestable wickedness, the most horrid cruelties, and the greatest miseries that have afflicted the human race have had their origin in this thing called revelation, or revealed religion. It has been the most dishonorable belief against the character of the Divinity, the most destructive to morality and the peace and happiness of man that ever was propagated since man began to exist." Thomas Paine (1737-1809), Anglo-American political philosopher, whose pamphlet Common Sense greatly influenced public opinion during the American Revolution. American Sojourn. Born on Jan. 29, 1737, in Thetford, Norfolk, England, he emigrated to Philadelphia in 1774, with introductions from Benjamin Franklin, who then represented the American colonies in Great Britain. Once there, he edited the Pennsylvania Magazine and published other writings. On Jan. 1, 1776, Common Sense appeared. In a dramatic, rhetorical style, it asserted that the American colonies received no advantage from their mother country, which was intent on exploiting them, and that every consideration of common sense called for the colonies to become independent of Great Britain and to establish a republican government of their own. Published anonymously, the pamphlet sold more than 500,000 copies and helped encourage the issuance of the Declaration of Independence half a year later. During the Revolution Paine wrote a series of pamphlets, entitled The American Crisis, that George Washington ordered read to his troops to improve their morale; the first of these opened with the famous words "These are the times that try men's souls." In 1778 Congress appointed Paine secretary of the committee of foreign affairs. After losing the post during a political dispute, he became clerk of the Pennsylvania legislature. Acknowledging that much of Paine's public service had been at his own expense, in 1785 Congress awarded him $3000 and New York State gave him a confiscated Royalist farm in New Rochelle.

Thomas Paine Dates:
Born: January 29, 1737 at Thetford, Norfolk in England
Died: June 8, 1809 in New York City
Arrived in America: November 30, 1774
Imprisoned in France: 1793-1802 Biography:
The son of Quakers, Thomas Paine (1737-1809) made an impressive mark on American society and politics with his stinging political essays. His first, African Slavery in America , was published in 1775 and sharply criticized slavery as unjust and inhumane. Destined to be much more famous and influential was his pamphlet Common Sense, published on January 10, 1776. The basis for this pamphlet was that common sense and plain facts dictated one course of action for the American colonies: separation from England. Advocating the most limited form of government possible, over 500,000 copies were sold, making it one of the most influential documents of the era. It was another work, however, which would impact Paine personally - and not positively.

Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
The Most Valuable Englishman Ever
By Michael Roll If this title is correct, then why has hardly any English person ever heard of him? The answer to this question is incredibly simple, because 200 years ago this great free-thinking philosopher had the courage to tell the truth in a country that was run by a handful of political and religious tyrants who were making sure the masses were kept in ignorance. However, the main reason why Thomas Paine has been written out of our corrupt history books, in a country where the Church and the state are still established, is because he did the same thing as Professor Richard Dawkins of Oxford University. He had the courage to question the supernatural absurdities contained in the Christian religion. Mainly that a book called the Bible is no more the word of the creator of the universe than any other book that has ever been published — a "crime" punishable by death in the 1700’s, and still against the law even today. The common law offence of blasphemous libel is still in place in the "free" country of Great Britain! This in spite of the fact that the Law Commission has strongly recommended that this antiquated law is abolished.

"These are the times that try men's souls." This simple quotation from Founding Father Thomas Paine's The Crisis not only describes the beginnings of the American Revolution, but also the life of Paine himself. Throughout most of his life, his writings inspired passion, but also brought him great criticism. He communicated the ideas of the Revolution to common farmers as easily as to intellectuals, creating prose that stirred the hearts of the fledgling United States. He had a grand vision for society: he was staunchly anti-slavery, and he was one of the first to advocate a world peace organization and social security for the poor and elderly. But his radical views on religion would destroy his success, and by the end of his life, only a handful of people attended his funeral.
Brief Biography
On January 29, 1737, Thomas Paine was born in Thetford, England. His father, a corseter, had grand visions for his son, but by the age of 12, Thomas had failed out of school. The young Paine began apprenticing for his father, but again, he failed. So, now age 19, Paine went to sea. This adventure didn't last too long, and by 1768 he found himself as an excise (tax) officer in England. Thomas didn't exactly excel at the role, getting discharged from his post twice in four years, but as an inkling of what was to come, he published

The Age of Paine
Thomas Paine was one of the first journalists to use media as a weapon againstthe entrenched power structure. He should be resurrected as the moral father of the Internet. Jon Katz explains why.

By Jon Katz If any father has been forsaken by his children, it is Thomas Paine. Statues of the man should greet incoming journalism students; his words should be chiseled above newsroom doors and taped to laptops, guiding the communications media through their many travails, controversies, and challenges. Yet Paine, a fuzzy historical figure of the 1700s, is remembered mostly for one or two sparkling patriotic quotes - "These are the times that try men's souls" - and little else. Thomas Paine, professional revolutionary, was one of the first to use media as a powerful weapon against an entrenched array of monarchies, feudal lords, dictators, and repressive social structures. He invented contemporary political journalism, creating almost by himself a mass reading-public aware for the first time of its right to encounter controversial opinions and to participate in politics. Between his birth in 1737 and his death in 1809, enormous political upheavals turned the Western world upside down - and Paine was in the middle of the biggest ones. His writings put his life at risk in every country he lived in - in America for rebellion, in England for sedition, in France for his insistence on a merciful and democratic revolution. At the end of his life, he was shunned by the country he helped create, reviled as an infidel, forced to beg friends for money, denied the right to vote, refused burial in a Quaker cemetery. His grave was desecrated, his remains were stolen.

Thomas Paine (1737 - 1809) Thomas Paine was born in 1737 in Thetford, Norfolk, the son of a Quaker. After a short education, he worked for a time with his father but this proved to be a disaster, as did several other jobs he tried.
At the age of 31 he became an excise officer and although this proved to be just as much of a disaster (he was sacked twice during his time there), it was during this time that he published The Case of the Officers of Excise - a leaflet that argued for a pay rise for the officers. In 1774 a chance meeting with Benjamin Franklin was to change his life. Franklin advised him to emigrate to America, and gave him letters of recommendation.
On arrival in Philadelphia he became a journalist. This was a time of unrest in America. The episode known as The Boston Teaparty was a sign of the increased tension between America and England. In 1776 Paine published Common Sense in which he put forward his ideas for the independence of America which had a lot of influence on the formulation of the Declaration of Independence
During the War of Independence he joined the Continental Army during which time he wrote a collection of papers on The Crisis . His stay in the army was short. In 1777 he became Secretary of the Committee of Foreign Affairs, but two years later he was forced to resign for disclosing secret information.

African Slavery in America (1775)
American opposition to slavery began with the Quakers in the late 17th century, but abolitionism didn't congeal into a movement until master propagandist Tom Paine, himself the son of a Quaker, arrived in America and penned this uncompromising condemnation of the practice. Common Sense (1776) This is itthe spark that lit the fuse of the American Revolution. With these words, Paine took a wavering people, teetering on the brink of revolution, and encouraged them to embrace the project with enthusiasm. Praised, in similar fashion, by virtually every other important leader of the American Revolution, "Common Sense" became the first bestseller in the nation's history, and Paine donated every penny of the considerable fortune it made to the cause of seeing through the revoluton it ignited.
