Paine, Thomas (1737-1809)
English-born radical political writer who sailed for Philadelphia in 1774 and subsequently argued for American independence. After serving with the American army, he returned to England in 1787 and wrote in support of the French Revolution. Arraigned for treason, he fled to Paris but was imprisoned for offering the French king asylum in the USA. While incarcerated he wrote The Age of Reason (1793) in which he argued aggressively that Christianity and pluralism were incompatible: [T]o believe that God created a plurality of worlds at least as numerous as what we call stars, renders the Christian system of faith at once little and ridiculous and scatters it in the mind like feathers in the air. The two beliefs cannot be held together in the same mind; and he who thinks that he believes in both has thought but little of either. See also Christian doctrines and pluralism

October 11 ~  Whole Heart and Soul Thomas Paine Reader
"When it b e c o m e s necessary to do a thing, the whole heart and soul should go i n t o the measure, or n o t attempt it." ~ Thomas Paine A man who put his whole heart and soul into political reform, passionate writer Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was born in England In 1774, with encouragement from Benjamin Franklin , Paine moved to Philadelphia. Less than two years later, he anonymously published the historic 47-page pamphlet Common Sense which urged colonial independence from Great Britain "A government of our own is a natural right," he wrote. "The sun never shined on a cause more just." Common Sense was an immediate hit, selling 120,000 copies in three months. When the revolution broke out, he enlisted. Some said Paine's The American Crisis was written on a drumhead near a campfire while he was with George Washington 's retreating army. Paine's eloquent plea for patriotism encouraged and stirred the disheartened spirit . "These are the times that try men's souls ," he observed, praising all who stood up and fought for freedom . "The harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph."

'Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.

Thomas Paine, 1737-1809
English political philosopher and pamphleteer. Paine, a Quaker, came to America when he was 37. His 1776 classic was one of the inspirational documents behind the American Revolution. He later moved to France to observe (and participate) in the events of the revolution. His famous 1792 book was a defense of the French Revolution directed against Edmund Burke and it got Paine tried for treason and outlawed in England. He became an honorary French citizen and a member of the National Convention. When the Girondists fell from favor, Paine was thrown temporarily in jail, where he worked on his controversial tract on religion, Age of Reason . He returned to the United States in 1802, but despised for his religious views, Paine died a pauper and outcast. Although not very influential on the development of economics, he was a sufficiently famous and polarizing intellectual figure of the late 18th Century to merit inclusion on this website. COMMON SENSE
by
THOMAS PAINE
The Anglo-American writer and political theorist Thomas Paine (1737-1809) boldly spoke out for social and political reforms, and played an active role in the American War of Independence. In his great and highly influential pamphlet Common Sense, published in January 1776, was the first bold, explicit assault on monarchical rule, and the first advocacy of the American colonies' independence from Britain. Written in clear language, Common Sense laid out how an independent government could be established and controlled by the people, and how rich and poor alike could share equally in privileges and duties. It was Paine's enlightened contention that in order to ensure liberty, no special preferments should be attached to any one religious sect, but that religious diversity should be respected.

Summary of Religious Views:
Although he is often thought of as and atheist, Paine was actually a deist. Paine wrote extensively on the subject of religion, both promoting deism and criticizing Christianity and other religions, especially deriding belief in miracles other non-naturalistic occurrences.
Paine strongly favored the separation of church and state, believing that government should be based on reason, not faith. He believed that the only valid role of government in religious affairs was to protect freedom of religion.
Quotations:
"As to religion, I hold it to be the indispensible duty of every government, to protect all conscientious professors thereof, and I know of no other business which government hath to do therewith. Let a man throw aside that narrowness of soul, that selfishness of principle, which the niggards of all professions are so unwilling to part with; and he will be at once delivered of his fears on that head. Suspicion is the companion of mean souls, and the bane of all good society. For myself, I fully and conscientiously believe, that it is the will of the Almighty, that there should be a diversity of religious opinions among us: it affords a larger field for our Christian kindness. Were we all of one way of thinking, our religious dispositions would want matter for probation; and on this liberal principle, I look on the various denominations among us, to be like children of the same family, differing only, in what is called, their Christian names."

2-Unit-C Option Available in 2005/2006 and in 2006/2007. Module Convenor: Dr. Thomas Dixon Thomas Paine (1737-1809) was an extraordinarily influential political writer, religious polemicist, and revolutionary activist. He played a key role, in Britain, France and America, from the 1770s to 1790s, in both bringing about and interpreting events that fundamentally reshaped the modern political landscape. Born in Britain, but later exiled, Paine was the author of the first American bestseller (his 1776 pamphlet urging rebellion against the British, Common Sense ) and the first working-class bestseller in Britain (his anti-Christian polemic, the Age of Reason , composed while in a French jail in the 1790s). In this course we will use primary and secondary sources to examine the connections between Paine's revolutionary politics, his Enlightenment rationalism, and his anti-Christian religious views. Major themes will include: the American War of Independence, the drafting of the US Constitution, the ideology and politics of the French Revolution, the invention of human rights, and British political radicalism in the 1790s and beyond. As well as exploring the production and reception of Paine's major writings, we will also read primary sources by other writers, including texts by Mary Wollstonecraft and Edmund Burke on the rights of men, the rights of women, and the significance of the French Revolution. Finally, we will reflect on the way that Paine's influence lived on into the nineteenth century and the different polemical uses to which representations of his life and thought have been put.

Thomas Paine (1737-1809)
English pamphleteer and political radical. Born in a Quaker family, he went to America in 1774, and became one of the strongest proponents of the American revolution. He was hailed as a hero of both the American, and French revolutionaries. After his staunch effort supporting the French revolution, the English tried him as a traitor in absentia. France under the "Reign of Terror", imprisoned him for a time claiming he was an enemy Englishman. Even in America. Paine was eventually seen as too radical, and was shunned after his enimies denounced him as an athiest, and a drunk. He died in the US a pauper in 1809. The unforgivable way he was treated by America and France, after all the great work he did to help both nations births and infancies, serves as more proof of the deep insight, and powerful truth of his writings. For both governments praised him when his writings were furthering their goals, and then feared him when his truth was later not to their liking. Among his most famous of writings were: Age of Reason: This book is Paine's thoughts on religion, including his critique of the Bible. This book was the direct cause of Paine being labeled by many as an Athiest. Although, in the book, he makes it quite clear that he is not an Athiest.
